Choose the Audi Q8 if you want one clearly defined performance SUV with standard quattro all-wheel drive, a 335-hp turbocharged V6 and a published towing limit of up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped. Choose the Lexus RX if a lower entry price, hybrid fuel economy or a choice of gasoline, hybrid, plug-in-hybrid and performance-hybrid powertrains matters more. Audi lists the 2027 Q8 from $76,900, while Lexus lists the 2027 RX from $55,450. Those are model-line starting prices, not equivalent trim quotes: drivetrain, options, destination charges, dealer pricing and availability can substantially change the vehicles you would actually compare.
This U.S.-market guide separates verified 2027 information from detailed 2026 RX data, because the available Lexus newsroom specifications are for 2026 and should not be treated as proof of 2027 equipment. It compares price, engines, efficiency, towing, cargo, technology and safety, then gives a practical way to select and price the exact trims.

At a glance: Audi Q8 vs Lexus RX
The Q8 and RX overlap as two-row premium SUVs, but they are not engineered around the same brief. Audi offers one performance-oriented configuration in the evidence available here. Lexus sells the RX as a family of powertrains that ranges from conventional gasoline to several forms of electrification.
| Question | 2027 Audi Q8 | 2027 Lexus RX or specifically identified model year |

| Safety evidence | No matched Q8 rating was verified here | IIHS 2026 RX page: Good in several listed tests, Poor in the updated moderate-overlap front test; rating applies to 2023–26 models |
The table shows why a single overall winner would be misleading. The Q8 has the stronger documented towing and performance case, while the RX creates more ways to lower fuel use or purchase price. Your answer depends on whether you are comparing a Q8 with an RX 350, RX 350h, RX 450h+ or RX 500h.

Price: the RX starts lower, but trim matching is essential
2027 model-line starting figures
Audi’s current U.S. Q8 page lists a $76,900 starting price for the 2027 Q8. Lexus’s current RX page lists a $55,450 starting price for the 2027 RX. The $21,450 gap is meaningful for a household budget, but it is not a quote for similarly equipped vehicles. A base price can omit or vary by destination and handling charges, optional packages, drivetrain, taxes, registration, dealer pricing and regional inventory.
For a useful comparison, configure the same essentials on both vehicles: all-wheel drive, panoramic-roof or towing hardware if needed, driver-assistance equipment, audio upgrades, wheel size and any package required to obtain a desired feature. Then compare the window-sticker total and financing terms rather than assuming that the lowest model-line number represents the vehicle you want.
Historical 2026 RX prices are not 2027 quotes
Lexus’s August 22, 2025 newsroom release gives useful context for the prior model year. It lists 2026 RX 350 grades from $52,775 to $65,095, RX 350h grades from $55,075 to $65,795, RX 450h+ grades from $66,780 to $73,410, and the RX 500h F SPORT Performance at $68,450. Those figures include a $1,550 delivery, processing and handling fee. They describe 2026 vehicles and should not be substituted for a live 2027 build-and-price result.
The historical list also illustrates how quickly the RX range can approach Q8 money. A highly equipped RX 450h+ or RX 500h may cost far more than the $55,450 entry figure, even though a basic RX 350 remains much less expensive than a Q8. Ask the dealer for a line-item quote that identifies model year, trim, drivetrain, destination charge and installed options.
Powertrains and performance
Q8: one straightforward performance proposition
The 2027 Q8 described by Audi uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 paired with a mild-hybrid system. Audi quotes 335 horsepower, 369 lb-ft of torque and a 5.5-second 0–60-mph time. Quattro all-wheel drive is standard on the cited U.S. model page. That combination gives the Q8 a clear identity: strong passing power, permanent all-weather traction and no need to choose between several engine personalities.
A mild-hybrid system is not the same as a plug-in hybrid. It assists the engine and supports vehicle systems, but the Q8 specification cited here does not promise electric-only driving or the kind of battery charging routine associated with an RX 450h+. Buyers who want to run daily errands on electricity should focus on the plug-in RX instead of treating the Q8’s mild-hybrid hardware as an electric range feature.

RX 350: the conventional gasoline choice
The detailed 2026 Lexus release identifies the RX 350 as a 275-hp turbocharged four-cylinder. That is a 2026 specification, not verified 2027 data. Lexus’s current RX page shows the 2027 RX 350 as part of the range and supplies the cited 2027 fuel-economy estimates, but you should confirm horsepower, drivetrain and standard equipment on the specific 2027 window sticker.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAn RX 350 makes sense when the lower purchase price of a gasoline model matters more than hybrid efficiency, or when your driving pattern does not justify paying for electrification. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive have different EPA estimates, and availability can vary by trim, so do not compare an RX 350 FWD quote with an AWD Q8 and assume the equipment is equivalent.
RX 350h: the efficiency-focused hybrid
The 2027 RX 350h AWD is listed at 246 net combined horsepower and 37 city/34 highway/36 combined mpg. Those are EPA estimates reported on the current Lexus page. The 350h is the most obvious RX choice for a shopper who wants a conventional hybrid without charging cables and places fuel consumption ahead of maximum acceleration.
Hybrid output is a system rating, not simply the gasoline engine’s horsepower added to an electric motor’s peak. Use Lexus’s stated net combined figure when comparing vehicles, and judge the 350h by its total operating efficiency, standard or available equipment and drive feel rather than trying to add component ratings yourself.
RX 450h+: plug-in range for drivers who can charge
The 2026 RX 450h+ is a plug-in hybrid. Lexus reports a manufacturer-estimated 85 MPGe combined rating, an EPA-estimated 38-mile electric-only range and a 6.2-second estimated 0–60-mph time. These figures apply to the 2026 release and are not confirmation of 2027 ratings or equipment.

The 450h+ is most compelling when you can charge at home or work and many daily trips fit within roughly the stated electric range. Once the battery is depleted, it operates as a hybrid rather than as a pure battery-electric SUV. Check charging equipment, local electricity rates, cold-weather effects and the exact 2027 EPA label before calculating savings.

RX 500h F SPORT Performance: the high-output RX
The current Lexus page lists the 2027 RX 500h at 366 net combined horsepower and 27 city/28 highway/27 combined mpg. It is the performance-oriented hybrid path in the RX family, but its output and economy figures should be read alongside the exact drivetrain and trim shown by Lexus. It can narrow the performance gap with the Q8 while retaining a hybrid system, yet its 2027 price and equipment may move it well above the entry RX.
Fuel economy: the RX has the documented advantage, but not a complete head-to-head result
Lexus provides the following 2027 EPA estimates on its current RX page:
| 2027 RX version | City mpg | Highway mpg | Combined mpg |
|---|---|---|---|
| RX 350 FWD | 22 | 29 | 25 |
| RX 350 AWD | 21 | 28 | 24 |
| RX 350h AWD | 37 | 34 | 36 |
The RX 350h’s 36-mpg combined estimate is a large improvement over the 25-mpg RX 350 FWD estimate and 24-mpg RX 350 AWD estimate. Actual results vary with temperature, speed, traffic, tire pressure, payload, terrain and climate-control use, but the difference is large enough to affect annual fuel spending for high-mileage drivers.
A 2027 Q8 EPA rating was not verified in the Audi information available for this comparison. That means you should not publish or rely on a numeric claim that the Q8 beats or loses to a particular RX on fuel economy. Obtain the current EPA label for the exact Q8 configuration and compare combined ratings using your expected annual mileage and local fuel price.
How to estimate your own fuel cost
- Estimate annual miles from your odometer history rather than a generic 12,000-mile assumption.
- Divide miles by the combined EPA mpg for the exact vehicle; use the city or highway figure only when your driving pattern is unusually consistent.
- Multiply gallons by your local gasoline price. For the RX 450h+, separately estimate electricity for the miles you expect to drive electrically.
- Run the calculation again with a conservative real-world adjustment, because weather, traffic and payload can reduce mileage.
Towing, cargo and all-weather capability
Q8 capability is better documented
Audi lists up to 7,700 pounds of towing capacity for the 2027 Q8 when properly equipped. “Properly equipped” matters: the tow package, hitch hardware, trailer brakes, tongue weight, passenger load, cargo and local regulations all affect what you can safely pull. The maximum is not a blanket allowance for every Q8 configuration, and accessories or vehicle load may reduce it.
Audi also lists 60.7 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats folded. That is a published figure for the Q8, but cargo usability depends on the shape of the load floor, seat position and whether you need all seating positions in use. Measure bulky items and check the liftgate opening before buying on the basis of a volume number alone.

RX space and towing data require a trim-specific check
The Lexus material used here gives the 2026 RX an overall length of 192.5 inches and a 112.2-inch wheelbase. It describes cargo access but does not provide a directly comparable cargo-volume or towing figure. The absence of a figure is not proof that the RX cannot tow or that its cargo area is smaller; it means you need the exact Lexus specification sheet for the trim and powertrain you are considering.
If you tow a boat, utility trailer or loaded travel trailer, make the Q8’s 7,700-pound claim a starting point for verification, not the final decision. Ask for the vehicle’s tow rating, payload rating and tongue-weight limit on the door label and owner documentation. For an RX, obtain the same documents before comparing it with the Q8. A lower tow requirement may make either SUV suitable, while a heavy trailer can eliminate an otherwise attractive RX configuration.
Standard versus available all-weather hardware
Quattro AWD is standard on the cited 2027 Q8. Lexus offers AWD on specified RX versions, while the 2027 RX 350 page figures distinguish FWD from AWD. Confirm whether the exact RX trim is front-drive, all-wheel drive or uses a hybrid-specific electric rear axle. Tires, ground clearance, driver skill and winter equipment can matter as much as the drivetrain on snow and ice.

Q8 available upgrades
Audi lists available all-wheel steering, Sport adaptive air suspension, night vision and a 1,920-watt Bang & Olufsen Advanced audio system for the Q8. These features can change the ownership experience: rear steering may make a large SUV easier to maneuver, adaptive air suspension can alter ride and handling, night vision is a specialized aid rather than a substitute for attentive driving, and premium audio adds cost without improving towing or fuel economy.
Check the build sheet to see whether a desired feature is standard, optional, tied to a package or unavailable on the selected 2027 trim. Two Q8s with the same model name can have materially different equipment and prices.

Some connected services depend on a trial period or subscription and on cellular-network availability. Ask which functions continue after the trial, what renewal costs, if any, apply, and whether the service works in the places you drive. Smartphone compatibility also depends on the current phone and operating-system versions.
Safety: read the individual tests and model years correctly
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s 2026 Lexus RX page reports Good ratings for the small-overlap front test, updated side test, headlights, pedestrian front crash prevention, seat-belt reminders and LATCH ease of use. It reports Poor for the updated moderate-overlap front test. The page states that its ratings apply to 2023–26 RX models.
Lexus’s 2026 release says Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 is standard. Driver-assistance packaging can change by model year and trim, so verify the 2027 RX equipment list. A test-specific Poor or Good result should not be flattened into an overall statement that one SUV is safer than the other.

Which RX powertrain should you choose?
Choose RX 350 when purchase price and simplicity lead
- You want the lowest-cost route into the RX family and do not need hybrid or plug-in capability.
- Your annual mileage is moderate enough that a higher hybrid price would take a long time to recover through fuel savings.
- You prefer a conventional gasoline refueling routine and are comfortable verifying FWD or AWD availability.
Choose RX 350h when fuel economy is the priority
- You drive enough miles for the 36-mpg combined estimate to matter financially.
- You want hybrid efficiency without installing a charger.
- You can accept 246 net combined horsepower and want a lower-fuel-use alternative to both gasoline SUVs.
Choose RX 450h+ when charging is convenient
- Most weekday trips fit within the stated 38-mile EPA-estimated electric range for the 2026 model.
- You can charge reliably at home or work and will actually plug in.
- You value the 2026 release’s 85 MPGe manufacturer-estimated combined figure and 6.2-second estimated acceleration, while accepting that 2027 figures require confirmation.
Choose RX 500h when you want hybrid performance
- You want 366 net combined horsepower in the 2027 listing and are willing to pay for the performance-oriented trim.
- You prefer a hybrid powertrain but do not want the charging requirement of a plug-in model.
- You accept the 27/28/27 mpg city/highway/combined estimates as the trade-off for higher output.
When the Q8 is the better fit
The Q8 is the more coherent choice for a buyer who wants standard AWD, V6 torque and a known 5.5-second acceleration claim without sorting through four RX powertrain families. Its published 7,700-pound towing limit and 60.7-cubic-foot folded-seat cargo figure are especially relevant to owners who carry substantial gear or tow regularly. Available rear steering, adaptive air suspension, night vision and high-power audio let you tailor the vehicle, although each can increase the transaction price.
Budget for the Q8 as a premium performance SUV, not as a direct substitute for the least expensive RX. Its higher entry price may be justified by capability and equipment priorities, but the fuel-cost comparison remains open until you obtain the Q8’s current EPA label.
When the RX is the better fit
The RX is the more flexible answer for a household balancing price, fuel use and powertrain choice. Its listed 2027 starting price is $55,450, and the range lets you select a gasoline SUV, a conventional hybrid, a plug-in hybrid or a higher-output hybrid. The RX 350h’s 36-mpg combined estimate is the clearest documented efficiency advantage in this comparison.

The model line spans enough versions that the exact trim is the product you are buying. A high-spec RX can approach or exceed the price of a lower-spec Q8, while a base RX 350 may be thousands less than either vehicle configured with similar options.
A practical test-drive and quote checklist
- Write down the exact model year and trim. Keep 2027 Q8, 2027 RX and 2026 RX data separated on your worksheet.
- Confirm drivetrain. Record Q8 quattro status and whether the RX is FWD, mechanical AWD or a hybrid configuration with an electric rear axle.
- Request the window sticker. Check destination or delivery charges, packages, options, accessories and dealer-installed equipment.
- Verify capability. For towing, compare the vehicle’s tow rating, payload, tongue weight, hitch hardware and trailer-brake requirements.
- Check the EPA label. Use the exact Q8 and RX configuration; do not substitute a different drivetrain’s mpg rating.
- Measure your cargo. Bring a stroller, sports equipment, child seat or other item you routinely carry and test the liftgate and seat positions.
- Test the technology. Pair your phone, try the touchscreen in bright and dark conditions, and ask which connected functions require a subscription after any trial.
- Drive representative roads. Include tight parking areas, rough pavement, highway merges and, if relevant, a route that exposes regenerative-braking or hybrid behavior.
- Compare total ownership assumptions. Include insurance, tires, fuel or electricity, financing and expected service costs without claiming reliability results that have not been established for these vehicles.
Bottom line by buyer type
| Your priority | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest listed entry price | 2027 Lexus RX | $55,450 versus $76,900 for the 2027 Q8, before trim and transaction adjustments |
| Standard AWD and V6 performance | 2027 Audi Q8 | 335 hp, 369 lb-ft, 5.5-second 0–60 claim and standard quattro on the cited page |
| Conventional hybrid efficiency | 2027 Lexus RX 350h AWD | 246 net combined hp and 37/34/36 mpg EPA estimates |
| Electric commuting with a charging routine | RX 450h+ | 2026 release cites 38 miles of EPA-estimated electric range; verify 2027 specifications |
| Published towing figure | 2027 Audi Q8 | Up to 7,700 lb when properly equipped; comparable RX figure was not stated |
| Most output among listed RX versions | 2027 RX 500h | 366 net combined hp and 27/28/27 mpg estimates, subject to exact trim confirmation |
The decisive step is not choosing a badge; it is matching a specific, priced vehicle to your use. Start with the Q8 if towing, standard AWD and V6 response are non-negotiable. Start with the RX if your budget or fuel plan points toward the 350h, 450h+ or another electrified version. Before signing, verify the live window sticker, EPA label, safety information and a hands-on fit check for the exact model year and trim.
