That distinction matters because “better for families” has two separate meanings. Crash protection and crash avoidance determine how well the vehicle protects occupants in a collision, while seat hardware, rear-seat geometry and cargo access determine whether everyday life is manageable. The Camry leads on the first question; the Q3 can lead on the second.

For a family comparing current US models, this is the clearest evidence-based safety advantage in the pair. The result covers the tests and equipment used for the rated Camry configuration; confirm equipment and model year on a specific car if you are considering an earlier or differently equipped vehicle.
Audi Q3: useful strengths but an uneven record
IIHS rates the Q3’s LATCH ease of use Good+ for 2019–2025 models. Its crash results are not uniformly strong: the Q3 has Good results in the small-overlap and original moderate-overlap tests, but a Marginal result in the updated moderate-overlap test and an Acceptable result in the updated side-impact test. IIHS also records a Poor seat-belt-reminder rating.
Those ratings do not mean that every Q3 is unsafe or that a child seat cannot be installed correctly. They mean the Q3 does not match the Camry’s current Top Safety Pick+ performance under the updated IIHS test protocols. If you are choosing primarily on independently measured US crashworthiness and crash avoidance, the Camry is the more defensible pick.
Do not mix European and US ratings
The 2025 Audi Q3 received an 86% child-occupant-protection score from Euro NCAP. That is a European assessment using Euro NCAP’s procedures, not an IIHS or US NHTSA rating. It can provide useful additional context, but it should not be substituted for the Camry’s US IIHS results when your purchase and driving are in the United States.

LATCH and tether hardware for child seats
Both vehicles can support two properly installed child restraints using the lower anchors and top tethers in the two complete LATCH positions. “Complete” means that a seating position has both lower anchors and a tether anchor. The third attachment location is different in each vehicle:

IIHS describes the purpose of LATCH clearly: “Child restraints can be installed correctly using vehicle seat belts, but LATCH is intended to make the process simpler.” The system is not a promise that every child seat fits every position. Lower anchors must be accessible rather than buried under upholstery or blocked by the seat, and the top tether must be attached to the designated anchor on the rear deck or high on the seatback.
How to install a child seat in either vehicle
Use the vehicle owner’s manual and the child-seat manual together. The manuals control which seating positions may use lower anchors, whether a center position may borrow anchors from the outboard positions, the maximum weight for LATCH use and the correct tether route.
- Choose the seating position. Start with one of the two positions that has complete LATCH hardware if your child-seat instructions permit LATCH. For a center installation, verify whether the center position has the required anchors; do not treat the Camry’s tether-only center position as a complete LATCH location.
- Read both manuals before attaching anything. Check the child’s age, height and weight limits, the approved belt path, recline setting and whether the seat allows a top tether in rear-facing mode.
- Expose and inspect the anchors. Locate the lower-anchor symbols or labels and confirm that the anchor bars are reachable. Find the tether anchor on the rear deck or high on the seatback, not a cargo hook or an unapproved tie-down.
- Attach the lower connectors when appropriate. Route them through the child seat’s specified LATCH belt path, connect to the vehicle anchors and remove slack according to the child-seat instructions. Do not route a connector around a head restraint or through an opening that the manual does not identify.
- Attach the top tether. Follow the vehicle manual’s tether path and the child-seat manual’s routing instructions. A top tether is part of the installation whenever the seat and vehicle instructions require it; a lower-anchor connection by itself is not a substitute.
- Use the seat belt when that is the approved method. A belt installation can be correct and may be necessary for a center seat, a three-across arrangement or a child who exceeds the seat’s LATCH weight limit. Use the exact belt path and locking method described by the child-seat manufacturer.
- Complete the manufacturer’s tightness and recline checks. Confirm that the restraint is level, the recline indicator is within range and the harness or belt is adjusted for the child. If the seat cannot be tightened as described, change the installation method or seating position rather than improvising.
- Recheck after loading the child. The harness should lie flat and follow the seat’s instructions for shoulder height, chest clip position and strap tightness. Recheck the installation whenever the seat is moved or the vehicle seating position changes.
Can the Q3 or Camry fit two child seats?
Two seats: the straightforward configuration
Two seats are the most predictable arrangement in either vehicle. Place one restraint in each outboard rear position and use the complete LATCH hardware where the individual seat permits it. This leaves the center position available for an adult or for a third restraint if the widths and belt paths work together.

Rear-facing seats often occupy more front-to-back space than forward-facing seats. Before buying, install the actual rear-facing seat behind the driver and passenger positions at the required recline. Check that each front occupant can sit at a safe, comfortable distance from the dashboard and that the front seat is not pressing against the child restraint.
Three seats: possible, but never guaranteed by the anchor count
Neither vehicle’s two complete LATCH positions establish that three seats will fit across. Three-across feasibility depends on the outside width, base shape, buckle locations, shell height, recline requirements and belt paths of the exact three restraints.
- Measure or test the seats together, not one at a time.
- Expect at least one installation to use a seat belt rather than lower anchors, especially in the center.
- Check that adjacent buckles remain accessible and are not trapped under a neighboring seat shell.
- Verify that each top tether reaches its designated anchor without crossing another restraint or cargo.
- Confirm that a rear-facing seat can be reclined correctly while the other two seats remain tight.
- Have the completed installation checked by a certified child-passenger-safety technician if the arrangement is difficult or if the manuals appear to conflict.
The Q3’s additional tether/borrowable-anchor position and the Camry’s additional center tether can be useful, but neither changes the requirement to follow the exact vehicle and child-seat instructions. Borrowing anchors is permitted only when both manuals allow it and the anchor spacing matches the child-seat requirements.

NHTSA advises keeping a child in the appropriate restraint for as long as the child fits the manufacturer’s height and weight limits. Children under one year old should always ride rear-facing. A rear-facing seat should remain rear-facing until the child reaches the seat’s stated rear-facing limit; do not turn a child forward simply to make the front seats more comfortable.

The Q3 and Camry differ in body shape, but the decisive clearance question is local: the exact rear-facing seat, recline angle and front-seat position. A compact SUV’s taller cabin can make loading easier, yet the Q3’s shorter overall length does not automatically create more legroom for a rear-facing shell. A sedan can provide adequate clearance as well. Install the seat at its permitted recline and sit in both front positions before deciding.
Never place a rear-facing child restraint in front of an active passenger airbag. Follow the vehicle and restraint manuals for airbag status, seat-track limits and any prohibition on touching the front seatback.

Audi Q3 measurements
Audi’s 2025 technical data lists 375 L of cargo capacity behind the second row and 1,293 L behind the first row. The Q3’s rear hatch opens the full cargo area, so a stroller, diaper bag or tall parcel can be lifted in through a larger and more upright opening than a conventional trunk. Folding the rear seatbacks creates the larger 1,293-L figure, subject to the vehicle’s loading limit and the way the seats are configured.

What the Camry’s trunk changes
The supplied Camry specifications do not state comparable cargo-volume figures. A sedan trunk can be easier to load for low, compact items because its floor is close to the bumper and its opening gives a defined loading edge, but it is less vertically flexible than the Q3’s hatch. Bulky strollers, tall travel cribs and large grocery loads should be tested through the actual trunk opening rather than judged from the nominal trunk shape.

Keep luggage below the seatback or secure it as the vehicle manual specifies. A hatchback’s extra vertical space is useful only when cargo cannot become a projectile in a sudden stop.
Is an SUV better than a sedan for child seats?
Not automatically. The Q3’s SUV format gives you a higher seating position, a hatch and more flexible loading, which can reduce bending while placing a child in a seat and make bulky equipment easier to handle. The Camry’s sedan body can still be entirely practical with two restraints, and its stronger IIHS record is more important than body style for a safety-first decision.
Consider the trade-off in the context of your routine:
- Choose the Q3 format if you frequently load a stroller, tall bags or bulky equipment, need hatch access in tight parking spaces, or prefer an upright cargo bay.
- Choose the Camry format if your priority is the current IIHS Top Safety Pick+ result and your normal cargo fits through a sedan trunk.
- Test either one in person if you expect three seats, use a large rear-facing shell or regularly carry an adult in the center rear position.
Purchase and running-cost questions
There is no universal cost winner from the available specifications. Purchase price, fuel consumption, insurance premiums and maintenance depend on the local market, model year, trim, drivetrain, mileage, driver profile and financing. Compare like-for-like local quotes rather than assuming the SUV or sedan will always cost less.
When requesting quotes, include the exact trim and safety equipment, annual mileage, insurance address and the number of drivers. Ask the dealer or seller which child-seat anchors and tether positions are present on that specific vehicle, especially if you are looking at a used Q3 or a Camry from a different model year.
A family-focused decision checklist
- Set the priority. If independently measured US crash performance comes first, begin with the 2025–2026 Camry. If loading flexibility is the deciding factor, begin with the Q3.
- Bring the real restraints. Take every child seat you intend to use, including the stroller if cargo space is important.
- Install the most difficult seat first. Usually that is the largest rear-facing seat or the center seat in a three-across plan.
- Check every tether and belt path. Confirm that the attachment point is approved and that neighboring seats can still be tightened.
- Load the family, not just the seats. Sit the tallest front passenger in place, position the driver, buckle the children and check access to each door and buckle.
- Check cargo with seats installed. Measure the folded stroller and place it in the actual Q3 cargo area or Camry trunk.
- Confirm the model-year details. Safety ratings, standard equipment and anchor labeling can change, so verify the vehicle identification and owner’s manual before signing.
Bottom line for families
The 2025–2026 Toyota Camry is the better all-around recommendation when child safety ratings are the deciding factor: it is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good results in the updated tests and standard front-crash prevention rated Good. The Audi Q3 is the more convenient family tool when its hatchback and cargo flexibility solve a daily problem. Both can accommodate two LATCH-installed child seats, while three-across use requires a hands-on fit check with your exact restraints and careful use of seat belts and tethers.
