Audi was reported to be holding some cars at U.S. ports and freezing dealer shipments; JLR said it would pause vehicle shipments in April while it worked through the new trading terms. Neither announcement, by itself, establishes a permanent shutdown or the companies’ current shipment policies.
What changed in U.S. auto tariffs
A March 2025 White House proclamation set a 25% tariff on covered automobile imports entered for consumption in the United States beginning April 3, 2025. The proclamation includes exceptions and provisions for qualifying vehicles under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), including treatment of U.S. content. It stated that the tariff would continue unless expressly reduced, modified, or terminated. Read the White House proclamation.
A later April proclamation amended some treatment for parts used in vehicles assembled in the United States. That parts change was separate from the original tariff on covered imported automobiles; it should not be read as a single, unchanged rule for both finished vehicles and parts. What Audi did
Reuters reported on April 7, 2025, that Audi was holding cars that had arrived at U.S. ports after April 2. An Audi spokesperson also confirmed a dealer memo freezing shipments from April 2 until further notice. The reports describe a hold during the tariff shock, not a permanent end to Audi’s U.S. imports. Reuters’ account of Audi’s shipment hold.

The affected vehicles were not all built in one country. Reuters noted that Audi’s Q5 was made in Mexico, while other Audi models sold in the United States came from Europe or elsewhere. The tariff proclamation’s scope and exceptions matter when assessing individual vehicles; the reported shipment hold alone does not specify the tariff treatment or final cost for every model.
What Jaguar Land Rover announced
JLR said it would take short-term steps, including a shipment pause in April, while it worked with business partners on the new trading terms and developed medium- to longer-term plans. The statement, carried by the Associated Press, explains the company’s stated rationale but does not give a detailed tariff-cost calculation or a confirmed date when shipments would restart. JLR’s announcement was described as a short-term April pause. The available statement does not establish that its scope or duration was identical to Audi’s reported port hold and dealer shipment freeze.

What this means for buyers—and what it does not
A shipment pause can affect supply, but these announcements do not establish that a particular buyer’s delivery was delayed, that a specific model’s price increased, or that a vehicle was unavailable. Cars already in the United States and cars held after arriving at a port are different supply situations; the reports do not quantify the effect on Audi or JLR customers.
Reuters cited a Volkswagen spokesperson’s estimate of about 37,000 vehicles in U.S. inventory, enough for approximately two months of sales. Keep JLR Classic merchandise shipments separate
JLR Classic issued a separate notice about merchandise shipments, not whole-vehicle exports. Effective April 21, 2025, it temporarily suspended shipments to private U.S. individuals when the customs value exceeded USD 800. Lower-value private shipments were unaffected; business shipments above USD 800 were not suspended, although they might be delayed. Why the tariff mattered to the U.K. car industry
The tariff announcement landed amid pressure on U.K. vehicle production and exports. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reported that U.K. car production fell 13.9% to 779,584 vehicles in the preceding year, and that more than 77% of U.K.-made cars were destined for export. Those figures indicate the sector’s exposure to overseas markets; they do not measure the effect of the U.S. tariff on JLR alone. AP’s report on the U.K. industry figures.

What is known about the current status
The shipment announcements and customer notice described here are dated 2025. They do not establish whether Audi or JLR resumed, changed, or renewed any restrictions by October 7, 2026. A buyer checking a specific vehicle should confirm its current availability and delivery timing directly with the relevant automaker or dealer rather than infer today’s status from an April 2025 announcement.
