Australian driver Matt Mingay was seriously injured when his Stadium Super Trucks vehicle overturned during a support race at the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix in Michigan on 4 June 2016. Contemporary reports described facial injuries and a serious but stable condition; later updates detailed brain, jaw, lung and spinal injuries, followed by years of reconstruction and a return to the series in 2020.
What happened at Belle Isle?
The crash occurred in a Stadium Super Trucks support race at the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix—not in a Supercars championship race. Supercars reported on 5 June 2016 that Mingay’s truck overturned on lap three. The race was suspended after a lengthy delay. The report said he was taken to DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital in serious but stable condition with facial injuries. Supercars’ initial report did not establish why the truck overturned, so a specific cause should not be inferred.
What injuries were reported?
In a 15 June 2016 update, Supercars said doctors had operated on Mingay’s lower jaw, drained blood from his lungs, and treated bleeding and bruising of the brain from the impact. The report also identified a fractured T1 vertebra. These details are contemporary media reporting, not an independently reviewed medical record. Supercars’ 15 June update said Mingay, then reported as 39, had been taken off the breathing ventilator and was walking assisted laps of his hospital ward.
How did his recovery progress?
Early recovery
The 15 June update described two early milestones: Mingay was no longer on a ventilator and was walking with assistance. Racer Paul Morris was quoted in that report on whether the series should continue racing: “Matt would want us to race.”

Surgery and jaw reconstruction
A 2021 Supercars retrospective said Mingay underwent craniotomy surgery the month after the crash. It also reported that surgery to begin rebuilding his jaw and mouth took place in November 2016, and described his jaw reconstruction as an 18-month journey before bottom teeth could be fitted. Those milestones are from Supercars’ 2021 retrospective.
Return to Stadium Super Trucks
The same retrospective reported that Mingay returned to Stadium Super Trucks in Adelaide in 2020. That is the documented series return; it does not, by itself, establish a broader record of his subsequent racing activity.

What did people say at the time?
In a Fox Sports Australia report published on 6 June 2016, Paul Morris described Mingay’s facial injuries and said he had “no permanent injuries.” That was Morris’s statement at the time, not a clinical assessment. Later Supercars reporting documented brain injury, craniotomy surgery and extensive jaw reconstruction, so the quote should not be read as a complete medical account. Mingay later described the experience in the documentary as “a fight that I was determined to win at all costs,” according to Supercars’ 2021 report.

Supercars reported that Mingay: Challenge Accepted, produced by Brad Day of DEFY Productions, premiered in 2021 and covered Mingay’s life, career, crash and recovery. That report said it was then available on YouTube, Google Play, Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes. This is a dated availability report; current listings and regional access may differ.
