Audi’s German patent application DE 10 2025 107 436 A1 describes ways an electric vehicle might use sound, vibration, light, sparks and scent to make its operation more perceptible. It is a patent application—not an announcement that Audi plans to put these features in a production car.
What does the Audi EV patent propose?
The application, filed on February 27, 2025, and published on August 27, 2026, covers several possible sensory effects rather than a single “sparking, scented EV.” It names Audi AG and inventors Dirk Bäder and Michael Grabowski. The ideas fall broadly into two groups: transmitting motor sound or vibration, and generating effects in response to how the vehicle is operating. The distinction between claims and explanatory description matters: the application includes examples in both. A patent document can describe possible implementations without showing that every described element is required or will be built.
Would an Audi EV really smell or throw sparks?
The application describes a fragrance device whose output could depend on vehicle operation, so scent is genuinely among the proposed concepts. It also mentions an arc generator and spark-generating device. But those descriptions do not confirm that Audi will build an EV that emits fragrance or throws sparks, and the application does not establish how either effect would work in a production vehicle.

The patent’s stated rationale is to make electric vehicles more perceptible through visual, acoustic, haptic and/or olfactory elements, with the aim of increasing safety and making the vehicles more emotional and interactive. That is the rationale given in the patent description, not a statement attributed to an Audi executive. The stated safety aim is not evidence that the concepts have been tested or shown to improve safety.

It is a patent application. The available sources do not show an Audi announcement that these effects are coming to a production vehicle, and they do not establish whether this particular application has since been granted, withdrawn or remains under examination. Publication documents proposed subject matter; by itself, it does not prove production intent.
