BMW has shown camouflaged electric M prototypes undergoing testing and separately confirmed that its Munich plant will build the first all-electric BMW M3 from 2027. The company has not explicitly identified the prototype in the testing images as the pre-production M3 later shown at the plant, and it has not announced a precise reveal, ordering or delivery date.
When is the electric BMW M3 coming out?
BMW M says production of the first all-electric M3 at BMW Group Plant Munich is planned to begin in 2027. In an update dated 2 October 2026, it showed a pre-production M3 at the site and described the plant’s future role. BMW’s January 2026 announcement had already said the fully electric BMW M era would begin in 2027. Neither announcement gives a specific public reveal date, order opening or customer-delivery date. BMW M’s Munich plant announcement and its electric M technology update set out the milestones.
Is the camouflaged BMW M3 the pre-production car?
BMW published images of camouflaged electric M prototypes testing on 21 January 2026. In a separate update on 2 October 2026, BMW M identified a pre-production all-electric M3 at the Munich plant. The official accounts reviewed do not explicitly confirm that the camouflaged prototype shown earlier is the same car as the pre-production M3 shown later. The camouflage images establish that electric M prototypes were being tested; they do not, by themselves, establish the final production design or specification.
What technology has BMW announced for electric M?
BMW has described an electric M architecture designed around four motors and wheel-by-wheel control. These are announced features of the electric M generation; BMW has not published a complete, final production specification sheet for the M3.

Four motors and torque control
The planned layout uses two drive units, one on each axle, with two motors in each unit—one motor per wheel. BMW says its M Dynamic Performance Control and the Heart of Joy computer will coordinate power and torque at each wheel. The front axle can be decoupled, allowing rear-wheel-focused driving and helping improve efficiency when all-wheel drive is not needed.
Battery and electrical system
BMW says the electric M battery will have more than 100 kWh of usable energy, use M-optimized Gen6 cylindrical cells and operate with 800-volt technology. The company also describes performance-focused cooling and a structural role for the battery that links the axles. These are BMW’s announced electric M-generation technologies, not confirmation of the final M3 battery capacity or a complete set of vehicle specifications.

Driving character
BMW’s electric M concept includes braking-energy recuperation, selectable driving modes, simulated gear shifts and a model-specific soundscape. The decouplable front axle is intended to support a more rear-wheel-focused feel in suitable conditions. BMW has not released independent driving impressions or final M3 settings for these systems.
What M3 specifications are still unknown?
BMW’s announcements do not establish the production M3’s power output, driving range, acceleration, charging rate, price or final battery specification. Nor do they confirm the order date or customer-delivery schedule. The announced battery capacity and electrical architecture should not be mistaken for a full specification: BMW’s M Concept Neue Klasse information says more availability detail is not currently available.

Once BMW releases final figures, useful points for evaluating an electric performance sedan will include not only range and charging rate but also vehicle weight, thermal performance during repeated hard use, and how consistently the car can deliver performance. No values for those M3 measures are confirmed in the announcements cited here.
What does the M Concept Neue Klasse show?
The BMW M Concept Neue Klasse previews design and technology directions, but BMW says the concept is not currently intended for sale. It is not the production M3 and should not be treated as proof that every visible detail will carry over.

BMW M says the first all-electric M3 will be built at BMW Group Plant Munich, Germany, from 2027. In its 2 October 2026 announcement, BMW M also said the factory had produced its one-millionth BMW M High Performance vehicle and reported an investment of around €650 million in the Munich production site dedicated to all-electric vehicles. Those figures describe the plant and its investment, not the M3’s price or production volume.
