Ather 450 Apex vs Yamaha EC-06: Which Electric Scooter Fits Your Priorities?

The Ather 450 Apex prioritizes acceleration, top speed and faster 0–80% charging, while the Yamaha EC-06 offers a larger battery, higher published IDC range and 24.5-litre storage. Compare the figures, caveats and buying checks before choosing.

Choose the Ather 450 Apex if acceleration, a 100 km/h listed top speed and quicker 0–80% home charging matter most. Choose the Yamaha EC-06 if you place greater weight on its larger 4 kWh battery, 169 km IDC range claim and published 24.5-litre storage. The figures are manufacturer specifications rather than results from a back-to-back road test, and both scooters require a city-specific price and stock check before you commit.

The short answer

There is no universal winner between these two electric scooters. They are aimed at different priorities. The Ather 450 Apex is the performance-leaning option on paper: its listed peak power, top speed and 0–40 km/h time are higher or quicker, and its stated 0–80% home-charge time is substantially shorter. The Yamaha EC-06 is the range-and-practicality choice on published data, with a larger battery, a marginally higher IDC range claim and 24.5 litres of storage.

Use the comparison below as a filter, not as a substitute for a test ride. IDC figures are produced under standard Indian Driving Cycle conditions and do not guarantee the distance you will cover in traffic, heat, rain, hills or sustained high-speed riding. Ather’s own materials also show two different Apex range figures, so that discrepancy needs to be part of any buying decision.

Range and battery: a close published result with an important caveat

What the IDC numbers mean

Yamaha publishes 169 km under the Indian Driving Cycle, while Ather’s current 450 specifications page lists 165 km for the Apex. The four-kilometre difference is small enough that it should not decide a purchase by itself. IDC is a controlled certification cycle; it is useful for comparing claims made under the same standard, but it is not a promise of daily distance.

Real range changes with rider weight, speed, acceleration, passenger use, gradients, tyre pressure, ambient temperature, traffic and the amount of time spent at high speed. A scooter ridden gently through flowing urban traffic can travel much farther than one ridden at its upper speed range. Conversely, a route with repeated stops, steep climbs or cold weather can reduce the distance available from either battery.

Why the Apex has two official range figures

Ather’s Apex FAQ says the model’s range increased from 150 km to 157 km, yet the current 450 specifications page lists 165 km IDC. Those statements are not interchangeable. The 165 km figure is the current value on the specification page; the FAQ is a separate official reference that has not been reconciled in the material available for this comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a careful purchase calculation, treat 165 km as the current published specification and regard 157 km as a conflicting FAQ figure that warrants confirmation with the retailer. Do not convert either number into an expected real-world trip distance. Ask the Experience Centre to identify which software, battery or certification configuration applies to the scooter being offered.

Battery capacity is not the same as usable range

Yamaha lists a 4 kWh battery, larger than the Apex’s listed 3.5 kWh pack. More stored energy can help on a long commute, but capacity alone does not determine range. Motor efficiency, control software, thermal management, vehicle mass and riding conditions all influence how much distance each kilowatt-hour delivers. The Yamaha’s higher IDC claim and larger battery point toward a range-oriented specification, while the Apex’s smaller listed pack still supports a higher performance claim.

If your routine includes a predictable daily distance, calculate it from your own charging opportunity rather than the brochure maximum. For example, identify the kilometres you must cover between two reliable charging sessions, leave a reserve for diversions and weather, and then test the route on a ride at the speeds you normally use. A seller’s statement that a scooter can cover a headline IDC distance should not replace that exercise.

Performance: the Apex is the clear paper-performance choice

Ather 450 Apex

Ather lists 7.0 kW of peak power, 26 Nm of torque, a 100 km/h top speed and 2.9 seconds for 0–40 km/h. Those figures indicate a scooter designed to feel brisk from a standing start and remain comfortable at faster urban-road speeds. The acceleration figure is especially relevant in traffic: a quick launch can make it easier to merge, clear an intersection or pass a slower vehicle, although the rider still has to judge gaps and road conditions responsibly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yamaha EC-06

Yamaha lists 6.7 kW, 26 Nm and a 79 km/h top speed. Its torque claim matches the Apex’s, so it would be inaccurate to say one produces more peak torque based on these specifications. Yamaha does not provide a directly comparable 0–40 km/h time in the cited listing; do not infer an acceleration result from the power or top-speed numbers.

The practical difference is therefore not that the EC-06 lacks usable performance. Rather, the published figures position it below the Apex for outright speed. Riders whose routes are almost entirely low-speed urban streets may rarely use the Apex’s extra top-end capability. Commuters who regularly use faster arterials, carry a passenger on open roads or value stronger overtaking performance are more likely to notice the Apex’s advantage, subject to a test ride.

Charging: compare the same state of charge

Ather states 3 hours 12 minutes for a 0–80% home charge. Yamaha states 8 hours for 0–80% and 10 hours for 0–100%. Comparing the shared 0–80% endpoint is the fairest reading: the Apex publishes a much shorter time to that point. Yamaha’s full-charge figure is useful for overnight planning, but Ather’s cited specification excerpt does not provide an equivalent 0–100% time.

Charging time matters differently for different routines. A rider who plugs in after every commute and leaves the scooter overnight may be satisfied with either system. Someone who returns home briefly between trips, runs several shifts in a day or cannot leave the scooter connected for long will benefit more from the Apex’s shorter stated 80% window. Confirm the supplied home-charging equipment, electrical requirements, cable length and installation arrangements with the dealer; the published times describe the manufacturer’s stated home-charge conditions, not every household installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not plan a trip around charging from empty to full unless you have verified the exact model, charger and ambient conditions. Charging rates can taper as the battery approaches full, which is why a 0–80% comparison is more useful for many daily schedules than a theoretical empty-to-full calculation.

Storage and everyday practicality

Yamaha publishes 24.5 litres of storage for the EC-06. That is a concrete advantage for riders who routinely carry a helmet, rain gear, a lock or work items, provided those objects fit the actual compartment shape. Volume alone does not reveal opening size, depth, lighting or whether a particular helmet will fit, so inspect it in person.

Ather’s cited Apex specification excerpt does not confirm a storage capacity. Do not assume that the Apex matches the Yamaha or that it is smaller. Take the helmet and bag you intend to carry to the Experience Centre and test the compartment, front hooks and any optional luggage solution. Storage can be more important than a small range difference when the scooter is used for shopping or daily commuting.

Price: treat published listings as a starting point

A secondary Hindustan Times Auto comparison lists an ex-showroom price of ₹1.90 lakh for the Ather 450 Apex and ₹1.68 lakh for the Yamaha EC-06. These are indicative listings, not verified current on-road prices. They may not reflect your state’s tax structure, insurance premium, registration charges, accessories, financing cost, promotional offer or delivery fee.

Request a written, dated quote from a dealer in your city for both scooters. Ask the quote to separate ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, accessories, charger or installation charges and any discount. Compare the final on-road total and the payment schedule rather than selecting a model from a single national listing. If an offer has an expiry date or depends on financing, record that condition beside the amount.

Subsidy eligibility also requires care. Ather’s Apex FAQ says its ex-factory price does not qualify for subsidy under the PM E-DRIVE guidelines. That is Ather’s stated explanation; eligibility rules and local implementation can change. Confirm the current central and state position with the dealer and the relevant government information before counting any incentive in your budget.

Availability can decide the purchase before specifications do

Ather’s FAQ says the Apex is available only at select Experience Centres. Yamaha’s official storefront displayed an online stock-unavailable message and says delivery depends on stock. These statements do not establish inventory in every Indian city. A scooter that is theoretically superior for your needs is not a practical choice if you cannot obtain it, service it or arrange a test ride locally.

Call the nearest outlet before travelling. Confirm that the exact model and colour are physically available, whether the displayed vehicle is a demonstrator or a sale unit, the expected delivery date, and where warranty or service work will be performed. Ask whether a booking is refundable and what happens if the quoted delivery date slips. Recheck stock immediately before paying a deposit because online status and showroom inventory can change.

Which scooter suits which buyer?

Choose the Ather 450 Apex when performance and charging time lead your decision

  • Your route includes faster urban roads and you value the Apex’s higher listed top speed.
  • Quick launches and the published 0–40 km/h figure matter more than maximum claimed range.
  • You often need to add useful charge during a short stop and prefer the shorter stated 0–80% home-charge time.
  • You can reach an Experience Centre that has the Apex available and can provide a local test ride.
  • You are prepared to confirm which Apex range figure applies to the scooter because Ather’s FAQ and current specification page differ.

Choose the Yamaha EC-06 when range, battery size and storage lead your decision

  • You prioritise Yamaha’s published 169 km IDC figure and the larger listed 4 kWh battery.
  • You regularly carry equipment and want the certainty of a published 24.5-litre storage capacity.
  • A 79 km/h listed top speed is adequate for your normal roads.
  • Your charging routine can accommodate the stated eight-hour 0–80% or ten-hour 0–100% home-charge times.
  • A dealer can confirm stock, delivery and a complete on-road price in your city.

Wait or keep comparing when the basic conditions are unresolved

  • You cannot obtain a dated quote that itemises the final on-road cost.
  • The nearest dealer cannot confirm stock, delivery timing or service support.
  • Your daily route requires a real-world range that neither IDC claim can safely guarantee.
  • You have not sat on the scooter, checked riding position or tested the storage space with your own helmet and luggage.

A practical buying process

  1. Map your routine. Record the longest normal day, the highest-speed section, passenger use, hills and where the scooter can be parked and charged. Include a reserve for detours rather than planning to arrive with an almost empty battery.
  2. Request both written quotes. Get city-specific ex-showroom and on-road totals, insurance, registration, accessories, charger installation and financing terms. Date each quote so an expired offer is not mistaken for a current price.
  3. Confirm model details. Ask the seller to identify the battery capacity, software version, charging equipment and the range figure they are using for the exact vehicle. This is particularly important for the Apex because its official pages show different IDC figures.
  4. Verify availability. Confirm the vehicle is allocated or physically present, the expected delivery date, booking-cancellation terms and the location that will handle service and warranty work.
  5. Test ride the same route. Ride both scooters over a representative mix of stop-start traffic, open road, speed breakers and a slope if available. Compare throttle response, braking feel, stability, seat comfort and mirror visibility rather than relying only on acceleration claims.
  6. Check charging at home. Measure the parking distance from the electrical outlet, confirm a safe installation path and ask what happens if your building requires permission. Keep the dealer’s stated charge time and equipment in the written offer.
  7. Recalculate the decision. After the ride and quote, compare the features you will use weekly. If a faster scooter remains unused or a longer range cannot be charged where you park, the headline specification has little practical value.

What to examine during the test ride

Low-speed control

Try tight turns, a U-turn and a slow crawl. Note how smoothly the motor responds when you release and reapply the throttle, and whether the scooter feels easy to balance with a passenger or a loaded bag. A scooter that is quick in a specification sheet still needs predictable control in a crowded lane.

Acceleration and braking

Use a safe, legal stretch to compare starts from a standstill and moderate roll-on acceleration. Do not attempt to reproduce a manufacturer’s timing on public roads. Pay attention to how the scooter builds speed, how much input is needed for a clean launch and whether braking remains composed over uneven surfaces.

Comfort and fit

Ride long enough to identify pressure points in the seat, handlebar reach and footboard position. Check whether a passenger has usable grab points and whether your knees or luggage interfere with steering. These details are not captured by peak power, torque or IDC range.

Storage and parking

Place your helmet, rain layer and lock in the Yamaha’s published 24.5-litre compartment and test the Apex with the same items. Check stand operation, turning clearance and the scooter’s fit in your parking space. Photograph the compartment layout if you need to compare it later, but do not rely on a showroom demonstrator’s loose accessories as part of the standard equipment unless the quote says so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to interpret the specification differences

The Apex’s higher peak power and top speed do not automatically make it more efficient, safer or better value. They describe potential performance under the manufacturer’s test conditions. The EC-06’s larger battery and higher IDC figure do not prove that it will travel farther on your exact route. Treat each number as one input in a decision that also includes charging access, service distance, storage, comfort and the price you are actually quoted.

Torque figures deserve the same discipline. Both manufacturers list 26 Nm, so there is no evidence here that one scooter has greater peak torque. Acceleration can still feel different because of motor control, gearing, vehicle weight, tyre choice and software calibration, which is why the ride itself matters.

Likewise, the charging comparison is valid only when the endpoint is the same. Yamaha’s eight-hour 0–80% figure and Ather’s shorter 0–80% figure can be compared directly; Yamaha’s ten-hour 0–100% value answers a different question. Avoid ranking one scooter from a mixed 80%-versus-100% comparison.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling the Apex range 165 km in every context. That is the current specification-page IDC claim, while the FAQ gives 157 km; neither is a guaranteed trip distance.
  • Using the four-kilometre IDC gap as a real-world verdict. Road conditions can change actual range by more than a brochure difference.
  • Declaring a final winner from one price list. The secondary prices need a dated, state-specific dealer quote and a full on-road calculation.
  • Assuming Yamaha’s acceleration. Yamaha does not publish a comparable 0–40 km/h time in the cited listing, so power and top speed cannot supply one.
  • Assuming the Apex has the same storage as the EC-06. The cited Ather excerpt does not confirm a capacity; inspect the scooter yourself.
  • Ignoring stock limitations. Select-centre availability for the Apex and stock-dependent Yamaha delivery can change which scooter is realistically purchasable.
  • Counting an incentive without checking eligibility. Confirm the current PM E-DRIVE and state rules before subtracting a subsidy from your budget.

Final verdict

The Ather 450 Apex is the better match for a rider who wants the stronger published performance package and faster stated 0–80% home charging. The Yamaha EC-06 is the better match for a rider who values its larger listed battery, slightly higher IDC range and confirmed 24.5-litre storage. Make the final choice only after a local test ride, a dated on-road quote and confirmation that the exact scooter is in stock. No matched independent performance or real-world range test establishes a universal winner between them.
