At an asking price of $11,500, this 1991 Saab 900 Turbo convertible has an appealing combination of a reported new soft top, tidy presentation and claimed recent maintenance—but its air conditioning does not work, and the cause has not been diagnosed. The available information does not establish whether the price is fair. The decision turns on an independent inspection, documentation and comparable sales, not the seller’s claims alone.
What is being offered
Rob Emslie’s October 6, 2026, Jalopnik listing discussion describes a car advertised in the Missoula, Montana area for $11,500, with 125,300 miles. The seller reportedly calls it “a well-kept driver, not a concourse car.” It is described as Beryl Green metallic, with three-spoke alloy wheels, new Falken tires and a new Robbins soft top. Jalopnik also reports a clean title and the seller’s description of it as a “longtime rust free Montana car.” These are listing details and seller statements, not independently verified findings. (Jalopnik)
Jalopnik reports a 2.1-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 140 horsepower and 133 lb-ft of torque, driving the front wheels through a five-speed transaxle. The article describes the engine as mounted backward over the transaxle with chain drive. Those specifications and mechanical details are attributed to that article; they have not been independently confirmed against factory documentation here.
What makes it appealing—and what remains unproven
The reported new top, fresh tires and maintenance items could make this an attractive driver if the work is documented and the car checks out. Jalopnik says the advertisement listed replacement ignition components, PCV parts, a cam-cover gasket and fuel filter, as well as a replacement power antenna and windshield wipers. The seller reportedly says the car starts easily, idles smoothly and pulls strongly under boost. None of those performance or maintenance claims is an inspection result; ask for receipts and have a qualified mechanic assess the car.

The A/C is an unknown, not a recharge diagnosis
The seller reportedly says the air conditioning is “on the fritz” and might need service or a recharge, while acknowledging it has not been diagnosed. Without fault-finding, there is no established cause, repair plan or cost. Ask a qualified technician to identify the system configuration, diagnose the fault and provide a written estimate before treating the A/C as a minor fix or using it to set a repair budget.
How to assess the car before buying
- Inspect for rust and structural condition. Have a specialist check the underside and areas hidden by trim or coatings. The seller’s Montana-history claim is not proof of a rust-free structure.
- Test the top and check for leaks. Operate the reported new soft top, inspect its seals and look for evidence of water intrusion. The listing discussion does not establish that the top has been leak-tested.
- Get the A/C diagnosed. Confirm the system configuration, the actual fault and a written repair estimate; do not assume it only needs refrigerant.
- Verify history and maintenance. Review title and history documents, service records and receipts for the reported work.
- Have the engine and turbo assessed. A qualified pre-purchase inspection can evaluate operation and boost behavior; the seller’s description is not a substitute for testing.
- Compare against recent sales. Look for sold examples with a similar body style, drivetrain, condition, documentation and location before deciding what this car is worth.
Does $11,500 seem fair?
The $11,500 is an asking price reported by Jalopnik, not a confirmed transaction or a verified valuation. One separate Carsforsale.com result showed another 1991 Saab 900 Turbo convertible listed for $7,995 with 127,624 miles. That is also an asking price, and the available information does not establish that the other car is comparable in condition, location, history or equipment. A separate Bring a Trailer result concerned a different 1991 Turbo convertible, described with a 2.0-liter engine and substantial documented work. It, too, cannot establish this car’s value. Those examples are not a reliable basis for calling this Saab a bargain, overpriced or fairly priced. The deciding evidence would be recent sales of genuinely comparable cars, plus an inspection that resolves the condition and A/C questions. Until then, $11,500 is simply the seller’s ask.
