Short answer: Choose the Aston Martin Vantage if measurable performance, lower acquisition cost and a stronger standard driver-assistance list matter most. Choose the Ferrari Roma if Ferrari identity, grand-touring character and its standard dual-clutch transmission matter enough to justify a substantial premium. Both are rear-wheel-drive, twin-turbo V8 cars, but they target slightly different ideas of a luxury sports car.
At a glance: two rear-drive V8 grand tourers
The Vantage and Roma occupy the same broad category—front-engine luxury performance coupes with rear-wheel drive and twin-turbocharged V8 engines—but the numbers point to different priorities. The Vantage is the lower-cost, higher-output choice in the cited U.S. data. The Roma counters with Ferrari branding, grand-touring positioning and a dual-clutch gearbox listed as standard.

Horsepower figures need a source note. TrueCar lists 656 hp for the Vantage, while Aston Martin’s own specification gives 680 PS, equivalent to 670 BHP, at 6,000 rpm. Those are different rating conventions and source figures, so they should not be treated as a single laboratory comparison. The Roma’s cited listing gives 611 hp.

New-car starting prices
TrueCar’s U.S. comparison lists a $194,500 starting MSRP for the Vantage and $247,308 for the Roma. The difference is $52,808 before options, taxes, registration, delivery charges or dealer-specific adjustments. That gap is large enough to affect financing, cash requirements and the amount of optional equipment a buyer can add without moving into the Roma’s price territory.

MSRP is only the entry point. High-end cars can vary significantly with configuration, availability and market conditions, so a buyer should compare an actual build sheet with the advertised starting figure. A lower base price does not guarantee a lower final transaction price if the Vantage is heavily optioned, nor does the higher Roma MSRP reveal what equipment a particular car includes.
Market-average prices
TrueCar reports average buyer prices of $182,801 for the Vantage and $255,221 for the Roma, with pricing data identified as current in September 2026. The reported averages differ by $72,420, which is wider than the MSRP gap. Average transaction data can reflect inventory mix, discounts, options and timing, so use it as a market reference rather than a guaranteed quote.
For a serious purchase, request written out-the-door figures for both cars in the same state or country. Compare the vehicle price, destination or delivery charges, taxes, registration, financing rate and every factory option. Without that normalized worksheet, comparing a base MSRP to a highly specified market car can produce a misleading result.
What the premium is buying
The Roma’s premium is not supported by the cited data as a simple horsepower purchase. The Vantage has the higher quoted output in both the official Aston Martin specification and the TrueCar comparison. The Ferrari case rests instead on identity, grand-touring positioning, the character associated with its dual-clutch transmission and the buyer’s preference for the Roma’s design and ownership experience. Those are legitimate reasons to spend more, but they are preference-based rather than a demonstrable value advantage in the supplied performance figures.

Performance: higher quoted output from the Vantage
Engine specifications
Aston Martin describes the Vantage engine as an all-alloy, quad-overhead-cam, 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. Its official specification lists maximum power of 680 PS (670 BHP) at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 800 Nm from 2,000 to 5,000 rpm. The same page identifies a front mid-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive.
The Roma uses a 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 in the cited comparison and is also rear-wheel drive. TrueCar lists 611 hp for the Ferrari and 656 hp for the Vantage. Because the two listings do not provide identical test methods or measurement standards, the horsepower numbers show the Vantage’s quoted advantage but do not replace an instrumented, same-day test.
Acceleration and top speed
Aston Martin’s official figure is 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) in 3.5 seconds, with a maximum speed of 202 mph (325 km/h). The cited primary data do not establish a comparable Roma acceleration or top-speed figure, so this article does not assign one. A missing figure is not evidence that the Ferrari is slower; it simply means the supplied sources do not support a like-for-like claim.

Transmission and rear-wheel-drive layout
Vantage automatic transmission
TrueCar lists an eight-speed automatic for the Vantage. An automatic gearbox suits a car that must cover commuting, highway travel and spirited driving without requiring constant clutch work. The rear-wheel-drive layout also gives the driver the traditional balance of a front-engine performance car, while demanding smoother throttle use on wet or cold roads.
Roma dual-clutch transmission
The Roma’s cited equipment data identify a dual-clutch transmission as standard, while the feature table also describes its gearbox as an eight-speed automatic. These descriptions are compatible: a dual-clutch unit can be an eight-speed automatic transmission in the broad classification used by vehicle listings. The important buyer-facing distinction is that Ferrari’s standard gearbox is specifically identified as dual-clutch, whereas the Vantage listing is simply described as automatic.
Transmission preference is personal. A dual-clutch design may appeal to a driver who values rapid, crisp gear changes and a more technical performance feel. A conventional automatic classification may appeal to someone prioritizing smooth low-speed behavior. The supplied information does not include back-to-back shift testing, so treat those as use-case considerations rather than measured superiority.

Fuel economy and everyday running
TrueCar lists the Roma at 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway, compared with 15 city and 22 highway for the Vantage. The Ferrari therefore has a two-mpg advantage in the city rating, while the highway figures are the same. These are listed economy figures, not a guarantee for every driver; traffic, temperature, tire pressure, fuel and driving style all affect consumption.

The highway tie means long-distance fuel use should be broadly similar on paper when distance and conditions are comparable. The Vantage’s lower city rating may matter more to an owner who spends most of the week in stop-and-go traffic. Neither car should be treated like an economy vehicle: twin-turbo V8 power, performance tires and short urban trips can produce results below the published ratings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Driver assistance and equipment
The Vantage comparison listing shows a notably broad standard driver-assistance package. It includes automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, a surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control and parking sensors. Those features can reduce workload in traffic and improve visibility when maneuvering a low, wide sports car.
The cited Roma equipment data do not establish an equivalent complete list of standard driver-assistance features. Do not assume that an item is standard, optional or unavailable without checking the exact model year, market and build sheet. Equipment can change by region and production run, and a dealer’s inventory description may omit features that are present on the car.

Which car fits which kind of driver?
Choose the Vantage when measurable value leads
- You want the lower starting price and a smaller initial capital commitment.
- You place a high value on the Vantage’s quoted output, 3.5-second 0–62 mph specification and 202-mph top-speed claim.
- You want the listed standard driver-assistance features, including surround-view imaging and adaptive cruise control.
- You prefer a front mid-mounted, rear-wheel-drive V8 with an eight-speed automatic classification.
- You would rather allocate part of the price difference to options, taxes, insurance or ownership reserves.
Choose the Roma when Ferrari identity leads
- The Ferrari badge and the car’s grand-touring positioning are central to the purchase.
- You specifically want the standard dual-clutch transmission identified in the Roma equipment data.
- You accept the higher purchase price as the cost of the ownership experience you want, not as a payment for superior quoted horsepower.
- You spend enough time in city driving for the listed 17-mpg city rating to matter.
- You have confirmed the exact equipment and specification of the individual Roma you are considering.
Neither is automatically the better daily driver
Both cars are rear-wheel-drive V8 performance coupes, so daily suitability depends on your roads, weather, parking and tolerance for attention and operating costs. The cited comparison data do not establish cargo capacity, ride comfort, seat dimensions, warranty terms, service pricing or all-weather traction. Those should be verified independently before you treat either car as a year-round commuter.
How to compare two actual cars before buying
- Freeze the specification. Record model year, body style, exterior and interior colors, wheel and tire package, factory options and mileage for each candidate.
- Separate list price from transaction price. Get a written out-the-door quote that includes destination or delivery charges, taxes, registration and dealer fees.
- Verify the gearbox and assistance equipment. Confirm the Vantage’s automatic listing and the Roma’s dual-clutch specification, then ask for a feature-by-feature demonstration of the driver-assistance systems.
- Check the market context. Compare the quote with the relevant TrueCar average—$182,801 for the Vantage and $255,221 for the Roma, dated September 2026—while accounting for mileage, options and condition.
- Drive both on the same route. Use an urban section, a highway stretch and a safe series of bends. Focus on seating position, visibility, brake-pedal feel, steering weight, gearbox behavior and noise at the speeds you actually drive.
- Inspect condition and history. For a used example, obtain service records, accident history, tire age, brake condition and an independent inspection. A low purchase price is not a bargain if deferred maintenance is substantial.
- Model your ownership budget. Estimate fuel from your own annual mileage, then add insurance, scheduled service, tires, brakes, storage and financing. The supplied comparison establishes purchase prices and listed fuel economy, but not the other running costs.
- Recheck availability and terms. Prices, equipment and incentives can change. Confirm that every figure in the final contract matches the car you inspected.
What the numbers do—and do not—prove
The available figures support a clear value argument for the Vantage: it starts lower, carries the higher quoted horsepower figures and has published official acceleration and top-speed numbers. They also support a modest economy advantage for the Roma in city driving and identify its dual-clutch gearbox as standard.
They do not establish which car rides better, steers more accurately, sounds better, has the superior interior, holds value better or costs less to maintain. Styling, exhaust character, steering feel and ride quality are subjective unless tested under the same conditions. A buyer should experience those traits personally and avoid treating reputation as a substitute for a drive.
Final decision
The Aston Martin Vantage is the rational recommendation when your priorities are performance per dollar, standard equipment and a lower entry point. It gives you the stronger measurable case without requiring the Ferrari premium. The Ferrari Roma is the emotional and grand-touring choice: its badge, transmission character and positioning can justify the extra spend for the right owner, even though the supplied figures do not show a power advantage.
Make the decision by identifying the feature you would regret losing. If that is the Vantage’s price-to-output ratio and driver-assistance equipment, buy the Aston Martin. If it is Ferrari identity and the Roma’s dual-clutch GT character, pay for the Ferrari knowingly rather than expecting the spreadsheet alone to justify it.
