Verdict: The Ferrari F8 Tributo is decisively quicker and faster on the published numbers, while the 2018-era Aston Martin Vantage makes the stronger case as a less extreme, front-mid-engine sports car for regular road use. The right choice depends on whether your priority is supercar performance or a more approachable everyday brief.

At a glance: Vantage or F8 Tributo?

This comparison uses the 2018-era Aston Martin V8 Vantage coupe and the Ferrari F8 Tributo. Those are not the newest versions of either nameplate, and the current-generation Vantage should not be mixed into the same performance table. The figures below are manufacturer-published claims, not independent track-test results.

On acceleration, torque, top speed and mass, Ferrari has the clear numerical advantage. The Vantage remains compelling because its engine sits behind the front axle, its rear wheels provide propulsion, and Aston Martin explicitly positioned it as an “everyday usable package.”

Generation and specification boundaries

Why the 2018-era Vantage is the fair Aston Martin baseline

“Vantage” now covers more than one generation. The Aston Martin figures in this article belong to the V8 model launched for the 2018 era, including its 4.0-litre twin-turbo engine, 510 PS and 685 Nm. Calling those numbers simply “the Vantage” can mislead a shopper looking at a newer car.

Do not fold the current Vantage into this table

Aston Martin’s current model page describes a newer Vantage with a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, 0–60 mph in 3.4 seconds and a top speed above 200 mph. Those are current-generation figures in a different model-year context. They are useful when considering a new Vantage, but they are not a substitute for the 2018-era data used against the F8 Tributo here.

Where the F8 fits

Ferrari introduced the F8 Tributo in 2019 as the high-performance successor to its 488-era V8 berlinetta. It is a two-seat, mid-rear-engine car designed around a more concentrated supercar mission than the Vantage’s stated road-going brief.

Performance: the Ferrari wins by a wide margin

Acceleration and overtaking reserve

Ferrari lists 0–100 km/h in 2.9 seconds for the F8 Tributo, compared with 3.6 seconds for the 2018-era Vantage. A 0.7-second gap to 100 km/h is substantial in a road car: it changes how quickly the car reaches motorway speed and how much margin it has during an overtaking manoeuvre.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The F8’s published 0–200 km/h time is 7.8 seconds. Aston Martin does not state a comparable 0–200 km/h figure in the supplied specifications, so no direct claim should be made about that interval. Ferrari’s acceleration figures are company claims measured under its stated test conditions; real results vary with surface, tyres, temperature, fuel load, driver technique and test method.

Power, torque and power-to-weight context

The F8 produces 720 cv and 770 Nm, versus 510 PS and 685 Nm for the Vantage. The units are not identical labels—Ferrari quotes cv and Aston Martin quotes PS—but both describe metric horsepower ratings and should not be treated as a laboratory-equivalent independent test.

Weight widens the performance gap. Aston Martin lists 1,530 kg dry for the 2018-era Vantage. Ferrari lists 1,330 kg dry for an F8 fitted with lightweight options. That 200 kg difference is not an apples-to-apples curb-weight comparison: “dry” excludes operating fluids, and Ferrari’s number specifically assumes optional lightweight equipment. Even with those qualifications, the F8 carries substantially less stated mass while making more power.

Top speed

The F8 Tributo’s quoted top speed is 340 km/h. Aston Martin quotes 314 km/h (195 mph) for the 2018-era Vantage. Neither speed is relevant to legal road driving in most countries, but the figures indicate each car’s engineering envelope: Ferrari is aimed further toward supercar velocity, while the Vantage gives up some ultimate speed for its broader sports-car positioning.

What the numbers do and do not prove

Published acceleration and top-speed figures establish a clear straight-line hierarchy, not a complete verdict on steering feel, ride quality, braking consistency or track balance. No independent instrumented test is included here, so those subjective and test-dependent areas should be judged from a specific car’s condition and a reputable road or circuit test rather than inferred from the specification sheet.

Layout and character: front-mid-engine GT versus mid-rear berlinetta

Vantage: front-mid engine and rear-wheel drive

The Vantage places its engine in a front-mid position and drives the rear wheels. In practical terms, that architecture is intended to keep the heaviest component behind the front axle while preserving a conventional long-nose sports-car proportion. It helps explain why Aston Martin could describe the car as a sports car with an “everyday usable package,” rather than presenting it solely as a high-performance exotic.

Rear-wheel drive also leaves the front tyres focused primarily on steering. That does not guarantee a particular handling balance—alignment, tyres, dampers and electronic calibration matter—but it gives the Vantage a familiar rear-drive sports-car basis.

F8 Tributo: mid-rear engine and rear-wheel drive

The F8 places its V8 behind the occupants and ahead of the rear axle in a mid-rear arrangement, while also driving the rear wheels. Concentrating mass near the car’s centre can support rapid direction changes and traction under acceleration. Ferrari’s own positioning is more overtly performance-led: the F8 is the high-performance successor to the 488-era V8 berlinetta, and its 720 cv output, 2.9-second sprint and 340 km/h top speed reinforce that mission.

How to read the layout difference as a buyer

  • Choose the Vantage concept if you value a front-mid-engine feel, a less intimidating sports-car identity and the possibility of using the car on ordinary roads more often.
  • Choose the F8 concept if you want the packaging and performance emphasis associated with a mid-rear-engine Ferrari V8 and will exploit its greater acceleration and speed in appropriate settings.

Neither layout automatically makes one car safer, more comfortable or easier to own. Those outcomes depend on the individual specification, road conditions, maintenance history and the driver.

Everyday usability: what can reasonably be inferred

Aston Martin’s stated brief

At the Vantage launch, Aston Martin President and CEO Dr Andy Palmer described it as “A true sports car with a sharper look and a keener dynamic edge, wrapping heart-pounding performance and dazzling dynamics into an everyday usable package.” That is a manufacturer positioning statement, not an independent usability score, but it clearly identifies the intended balance.

Why the F8 is a more specialised proposition

Ferrari’s 5 March 2019 launch release emphasised the F8’s 720 horsepower and called it the best-performing V8 Ferrari not from a limited series. The F8’s two-seat berlinetta format, mid-rear engine and substantially higher output point to a more focused supercar role. That does not mean it cannot be driven regularly; it means the design brief gives ultimate performance more weight than the Vantage brief does.

Questions to answer during an actual viewing

The available specifications do not establish luggage volume, seat adjustment range, ride comfort, cabin noise, infotainment functions or visibility. Inspect the exact car rather than assuming those details from the badge. Sit in both seats, check access with the roof and doors in the positions you will use, test the driving position, and determine whether the car’s ground clearance and turning space suit your regular routes.

For a daily driver, also consider whether your local roads, parking spaces, weather and traffic allow you to use the performance safely. The Vantage’s lower published performance ceiling does not make it slow; its 3.6-second 0–100 km/h claim is still supercar-quick. It simply leaves a wider margin between normal road use and the car’s maximum capability.

Price context: similar references can hide very different markets

Original US pricing

Aston Martin’s 2018-era Vantage had a US launch reference of $149,995. Cars.com lists a $280,000 starting MSRP for a 2023 Ferrari F8 Tributo in its comparison dataset. Those are model-year-specific US references, not current transaction prices, and they should not be used as a direct quotation for a used example today.

India comparison data

Cars24 lists ₹3.99 crore for the Vantage and ₹4.02 crore for the F8 Tributo in an India comparison accessed in 2026. These are ex-showroom reference figures for that market. Registration, insurance, taxes, options, import status and dealer terms can change the amount a buyer actually pays, so the near-parity should not be interpreted as a universal global price relationship.

Why “Is the F8 worth the extra money?” has no single answer

In the original US references, the F8 sits far above the Vantage. In the cited India comparison, the listed ex-showroom figures are close. That apparent contradiction is a reminder that market, model year and supply matter more than a simple badge-to-badge price claim.

Value also depends on what you are buying. The F8’s premium pays for a higher-output, lighter, mid-rear-engine Ferrari package and the performance associated with it. The Vantage’s case is that you may obtain a front-mid-engine, rear-drive V8 sports car with a lower original launch reference and a less single-minded brief. Neither statement predicts depreciation, servicing cost or resale value for a particular used car; those require a vehicle-specific inspection and local market data.

How to build a defensible budget

  1. Identify the exact model year, country of first registration and specification.
  2. Separate the advertised purchase price from taxes, registration, insurance, transport and any import charges.
  3. Obtain the car’s maintenance and ownership records before comparing it with another example.
  4. Reserve funds for specialist inspection, consumables and unexpected repairs instead of spending the entire budget on the purchase price.
  5. Compare several current listings in the same currency and market; do not combine a US launch MSRP with an India ex-showroom figure or a used-car asking price.

Cabin and technology: compare generations, not just equipment lists

The 2018-era Vantage and 2019-launched F8 come from different product programmes. A buyer cross-shopping them is therefore comparing not only engines and layouts but also the age of each cabin, interface and electronic architecture. The supplied specifications do not provide a complete equipment list, so it would be misleading to declare one car’s infotainment, driver-assistance or materials superior in every configuration.

Instead, evaluate the actual vehicle. Confirm which navigation, smartphone integration, audio, camera and parking functions are fitted; check that every screen and control works; and ask whether software updates or replacement components are available in your market. An earlier car with a desirable mechanical specification can still be the poorer purchase if its electronics are neglected or its service history is incomplete.

Options matter especially on the F8 because Ferrari’s 1,330 kg dry-weight figure assumes lightweight options. Verify the build sheet rather than assuming every F8 carries that equipment. The same principle applies to the Vantage: published base specifications do not tell you which comfort, appearance or chassis options an individual car has.

Ownership and inspection priorities

Verify identity and provenance

  • Match the vehicle identification number on the car, documents and service invoices.
  • Confirm the model year and whether the car is the 2018-era V8 Vantage used for this comparison or a newer-generation Vantage.
  • Check import, registration and tax status in the country where you will operate it.
  • Request a complete record of servicing, repairs, accident claims and ownership changes.

Inspect the mechanical specification

Have an independent specialist inspect the engine, turbocharger system, cooling system, transmission, suspension, steering, brakes, tyres and underbody. A road test should begin with a cold start and include urban speeds, a motorway-speed run where legal, low-speed manoeuvres and repeated braking. The purpose is not to recreate Ferrari’s or Aston Martin’s published acceleration tests; it is to identify faults, warning lights, abnormal noises, vibration, overheating or inconsistent operation.

Check consumables and condition against the use case

Ask when tyres, brakes, fluids and the battery were last replaced, and whether the car has spent most of its life in storage, traffic or spirited driving. Inspect for uneven tyre wear, wheel damage, paint variation, corrosion and evidence of water ingress. These checks are relevant to both cars even though their performance missions differ.

Confirm local support before buying

Find out which authorised or independent specialists can work on the exact model in your area, how far the nearest facility is, and how parts are sourced. Obtain written estimates for routine servicing and common wear items. Support availability can change the practical cost of ownership more than a headline difference in launch price.

Which one should you choose?

Pick the Ferrari F8 Tributo if…

  • You want the strongest published performance: 720 cv, 770 Nm, 2.9 seconds to 100 km/h and 340 km/h.
  • You specifically want a mid-rear-engine, two-seat Ferrari V8 berlinetta.
  • You value the F8’s lower stated dry weight, accepting that the 1,330 kg figure includes lightweight options.
  • You are comfortable with a more specialised supercar brief and a price that was substantially higher than the Vantage’s original US launch reference.

Pick the 2018-era Aston Martin Vantage if…

  • You prefer a front-mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports-car layout.
  • You want 510 PS, 685 Nm, 3.6 seconds to 100 km/h and 314 km/h without needing the F8’s ultimate performance envelope.
  • Aston Martin’s stated everyday-usability aim better matches your roads and driving routine.
  • You find a well-documented example at a price that makes sense in your local market.

If you are considering a new Vantage

Start a separate comparison using the current-generation car’s own year and specification. Aston Martin’s current figures—0–60 mph in 3.4 seconds and a top speed above 200 mph—show why it should not be treated as the same vehicle as the 2018-era baseline. Compare dimensions, equipment, warranty and local pricing directly rather than carrying over assumptions from this older V8 specification.

Final decision framework

Use three questions to make the choice concrete. First, do you want the fastest published car? That is the F8. Second, do you want a front-mid-engine sports car whose manufacturer explicitly targeted everyday usability? That points to the Vantage. Third, does the local price reflect the same market, model year and condition? If not, rebuild the comparison before treating one as better value.

The Ferrari F8 Tributo is the performance winner on every directly stated headline metric: power, torque, acceleration, top speed and quoted dry weight. The 2018-era Aston Martin Vantage is the rational alternative for a driver who values its layout and broader road-going brief more than outright numbers. Neither is automatically the better purchase; the best answer is the example whose generation, condition, provenance, support and intended use all line up.
