The Aston Martin DBX S makes a strong specification-based case against the Ferrari Purosangue, but the available evidence does not establish a clear overall winner. Aston pairs a 727 PS twin-turbo V8 with a five-seat SUV format; Ferrari counters with a naturally aspirated V12 and four individual seats. Their quoted acceleration times are close, but were stated in different units and are not the result of a controlled comparison.
What is the DBX S, and what changed from the DBX707?
Aston Martin announced the DBX S on 30 April 2025 as a new flagship in the DBX range. Its upgraded 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 produces 727 PS and 900 Nm, which Aston says is 20 PS more than the DBX707. The company attributes the engine’s development to improvements including larger turbocharger compressor wheels, with technology drawn from the forthcoming Valhalla. The revisions extend beyond the engine. Aston Martin says it recalibrated the steering and transmission, revised air-spring and electronic-damper settings for transient body control, and fitted electronic roll control as standard. The DBX S also has 420 mm front and 390 mm rear carbon-ceramic brakes. Those specifications describe the hardware and the company’s aims; without a detailed independent road test, they do not prove that the DBX S steers, rides, corners or stops better than the Ferrari.
Optional weight-saving equipment
Aston Martin offers an optional carbon-fibre roof and 23-inch magnesium wheels. The company says the roof removes 18 kg from the car’s highest point and the wheels save 19 kg of unsprung mass. It claims the available lightweight measures together can reduce weight by up to 47 kg compared with the DBX707. The cited comparison is with the DBX707, not the Purosangue, and the 47 kg figure is a maximum claim for the options rather than a standard reduction on every DBX S.

Aston also quotes a steering ratio that is four per cent faster and a turning circle reduced by almost half a metre, to 12.0 m. These are engineering figures, not evidence by themselves of superior agility. Exterior changes include a black vaned grille, a revised front splitter and diffuser, and vertically stacked quad exhausts; a lightweight polycarbonate honeycomb grille is optional. Aston describes the standard cabin trim as Alcantara and semi-aniline leather, with all-leather trim available.

The brands use different acceleration units, and the times are not a controlled head-to-head result. How do the V8 and V12 compare?
The DBX S and Purosangue make their performance case in different ways. Aston’s turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 is rated at 727 PS and 900 Nm; Ferrari’s naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 is rated at 725 cv and 716 Nm. PS and cv are metric horsepower units, but the figures remain each manufacturer’s stated outputs. The numbers alone cannot tell you which engine feels more responsive, sounds better or suits a particular driver.
Both brands quote a 3.3-second acceleration time, but Aston’s is for 0–62 mph and Ferrari’s for 0–100 km/h. Those endpoints are close, not identical, and neither figure comes from an independently controlled test of both cars under the same conditions. Top-speed claims also use different units: Aston states 193 mph, while Ferrari states more than 310 km/h. They are useful as factory specifications, not proof that one car is quicker in a direct contest.

Which is more practical for people and luggage?
The Ferrari’s cabin is defined by four individual seats and rear-hinged rear doors. Ferrari says the car accommodates four adults and equips the rear seats with electric adjustment and reclining. In Ferrari’s feature on the car, Chief Marketing & Commercial Officer Enrico Galliera explained the rationale: “We like to be unpredictable. Of course, Ferrari has produced many two-plus-two models in its history but, talking to our clients, it was clear that there was an untapped demand for something with space for four adults and easier entry to the rear seats.” Ferrari’s Purosangue feature
Aston Martin’s published DBX S specifications give 1,040 mm of rear legroom and 638 litres of total loadspace, while Ferrari lists a 473-litre boot. Those published numbers suggest the Aston offers more stated luggage volume, but they do not establish how easily awkward objects fit or how usable either load area is in practice. Nor do they settle rear-seat comfort, ease of entry or space for four adults in a real-world journey.

What do the fuel figures say?
Aston Martin’s current DBX S model page lists combined WLTP fuel consumption of 14.3 l/100 km and CO₂ emissions of 323 g/km. These are official, market-sensitive figures, not real-world test results; check the specification for the market in which the car is being offered. No comparable Purosangue consumption figure is established here, so this evidence cannot determine which car uses less fuel in equivalent driving.
Does the evidence show that the DBX S beats the Purosangue?
Not conclusively. The DBX S has the higher stated torque figure, while Ferrari offers a distinctive naturally aspirated V12 and a clearly specified four-seat layout with rear-hinged doors. Aston publishes a larger loadspace figure, but capacity conventions may differ. Each manufacturer’s acceleration and top-speed numbers are claims made on its own terms, not results from a shared test.

Top Gear has published a comparison video covering performance, the cabin, rear seats, boot, long-distance driving and driving impressions, but the available source information does not provide enough detail to support a precise independent verdict. A credible claim that one is better to drive, more comfortable, more refined or easier to live with needs a full road test that evaluates both cars directly. Price and option costs are also not established here, so value cannot be compared.
On the evidence available, “beating the Ferrari” is a hypothesis rather than a proven result. The DBX S is the specification-led alternative for readers drawn to a high-output V8 and the published space figures; the Purosangue makes its own case with a V12 and a four-seat, rear-hinged-door arrangement.
