The Aston Martin DB12 and Maserati MC20 are not two versions of the same idea. The DB12 is a front-engined 2+2 coupe that Aston Martin positions as a “Super Tourer,” combining high performance with a grand-touring brief. The MC20 is a mid-engined, two-seat supercar built around a carbon-fibre monocoque. Choosing between them starts with seating, layout and intended use—not a single acceleration number.
Both manufacturers claim a 202 mph top speed, but their acceleration figures use different test conventions and markets. The DB12’s global claim is 0–62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.6 seconds, while Maserati’s US figure for the MC20 is 0–60 mph in 2.9 seconds. Those numbers should be reported as published, not treated as a controlled head-to-head result.

Two different answers to the luxury-performance question
Aston Martin DB12: a 2+2 Super Tourer
Aston Martin describes the DB12 as “the world’s first super tourer” on its US model page. That is the manufacturer’s positioning, not an independent industry classification. The coupe has 2+2 seating and a front-mounted 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8. Its brief is to combine long-distance ability, refinement and serious performance in one car.
The official global DB12 page lists 680 PS at 6,000 rpm and 800 Nm of torque from 2,750 to 6,000 rpm. The US page’s narrative uses 671 hp for the same model, reflecting market and unit conventions. The car uses a rear-mid-mounted ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, adaptive damping and an electronic differential. Optional carbon-ceramic brakes are available according to Aston Martin’s US documentation.

The 2+2 layout is the clearest practical distinction between the cars. It gives the DB12 two additional occasional seats, although the available manufacturer material does not establish how comfortable those seats are for adults or provide a detailed luggage comparison.
Maserati MC20: a mid-engined carbon-fibre supercar
Maserati presents the MC20 as a mid-engined supercar. Its structure is based on a carbon-fibre monocoque, and the engine is a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged Nettuno V6. The layout prioritises a two-seat supercar cabin and central mass placement rather than the DB12’s 2+2 touring format.
Maserati’s global page lists 630 metric hp and 730 Nm, with 0–100 km/h in under 2.9 seconds and a maximum speed above 325 km/h. The US page lists 621 hp, 538 lb-ft, 0–60 mph in 2.9 seconds and a 202 mph top speed. The launch-era 2020 Maserati/Stellantis release also quoted 621 hp and a dual-clutch transmission; those figures should be kept labelled as launch-era corporate specifications rather than treated as a fresh independent test.
The MC20’s equipment list reflects its more focused brief. It uses an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, offers four drive modes and has a front-axle lift that raises the front by 50 mm and can be operated at speeds up to 40 km/h, according to Maserati’s global documentation.

Power, torque and the units behind the numbers
Why 680 PS is not the same label as 671 hp
PS is metric horsepower, while hp on a US specification page denotes horsepower in the convention used there. The DB12 appears as 680 PS on Aston Martin’s global page and 671 hp in the US narrative. Maserati similarly lists 630 metric hp globally and 621 hp for the US market. Those labels should not be collapsed into one supposedly identical number without a stated conversion and the original market context.

Torque is presented in different units as well. Aston Martin gives 800 Nm, and Maserati gives 730 Nm globally but 538 lb-ft on its US page. Converting units can make a technical comparison easier, but it does not turn the cars into a controlled test. The manufacturer’s calibration, test method and market specification remain relevant.
V8 character versus V6 packaging
The DB12’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is larger in displacement and uses a front-mounted installation. The MC20’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo Nettuno V6 sits behind the cabin in a mid-engine layout. Engine-cylinder count and displacement describe hardware; they do not by themselves establish which car sounds better, responds faster in every situation or is more comfortable on a road trip. Those judgments require independent, dated testing.
Reading the acceleration and top-speed claims correctly
DB12 figures
Aston Martin’s current global page states 0–62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.6 seconds and a 202 mph maximum speed. Its US page narrative states 0–60 mph in 3.5 seconds. The difference in distance—60 mph versus 62 mph—and the market-specific presentation mean the two numbers should be displayed separately rather than averaged.
MC20 figures
Maserati’s US page lists 0–60 mph in 2.9 seconds and a 202 mph top speed. Its global page says 0–100 km/h in under 2.9 seconds and a maximum speed above 325 km/h. The 2020 launch release also used “under 2.9 seconds” for 0–60 mph and “over 202 mph” for top speed; that source is useful for historical context but is not a substitute for a current market specification.
What can and cannot be concluded
On the published US 0–60 figures, the MC20 has the lower claimed time. On the global 0–100 km/h figures, Maserati also claims under 2.9 seconds while Aston Martin claims 3.6 seconds to 62 mph. However, no independent back-to-back test, test surface, tyre condition, weather record or launch procedure is provided. The figures therefore describe each manufacturer’s claim, not a definitive ranking in real traffic or on a track.

Transmission and chassis hardware
DB12’s automatic and adaptive systems
The DB12 uses a rear-mid-mounted ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. That is a different transmission architecture from the MC20’s dual-clutch unit and should matter to a buyer who has a clear preference for shift response or low-speed smoothness. Aston Martin also lists adaptive damping and an electronic differential. Optional carbon-ceramic brakes are an equipment choice, not proof of a measured braking advantage.
Adaptive damping can be an important question for mixed use because it gives the car a system intended to vary damper behaviour. The documentation confirms the feature’s presence, but it does not quantify ride quality, body control or steering feel. Those are drive-and-test questions.
MC20’s dual-clutch gearbox, modes and lift system
The MC20’s eight-speed dual-clutch transmission is listed in Maserati’s launch documentation, while the current global material describes four drive modes. Maserati also specifies a front-axle lift with 50 mm of movement and operation up to 40 km/h. That hardware can help when approaching steep ramps or other low-clearance obstacles, but the specification does not establish how often a driver will need it or how the system behaves on a particular route.

Practicality: the distinction the specifications can support
Seating and daily-use expectations
The DB12’s official 2+2 seating gives it a different potential use case from the MC20’s two-seat supercar layout. It may allow a driver to carry two additional passengers for short journeys, but Aston Martin’s published material does not establish adult rear-seat comfort, child-seat compatibility or a luggage-volume figure.
The MC20’s mid-engine, two-seat configuration makes its mission clearer: the cabin is arranged around the driver and one passenger. Maserati’s pages provide dealer, inventory and configuration routes, but they do not supply a comparable luggage table. Avoid assuming that either car meets a particular travel plan until the exact cabin, storage areas and required equipment have been checked in person.

Fuel economy is not an efficiency contest here
Aston Martin’s US figures are 14 city, 22 highway and 17 combined mpg. Its global page reports 12.2 l/100 km combined. Maserati’s global page reports 11.6 l/100 km combined under an EU test regulation, while the Maserati US page does not provide matching US city/highway/combined figures.

Buying in a specific market: what still needs verification
No current comparable price was established for a defined country, model year and options specification. A DB12 or MC20 quotation can change with destination charges, taxes, delivery costs, factory options, registration fees and dealer terms. Asking for a headline price without those details can create a misleading comparison.
Before choosing, request written answers to these questions:
- Which model year and exact specification is being quoted?
- Which market’s power, emissions and fuel-economy certification applies?
- Are carbon-ceramic brakes, the MC20 front-axle lift and other desired equipment standard or optional on the car in stock?
- What is the confirmed delivery date, and is the vehicle physically allocated to the dealer?
- What warranty, scheduled-service plan and roadside assistance terms apply in your country?
- Which authorised service location will handle routine and high-voltage-free mechanical work, diagnostics and recalls?
- What insurance group, annual tax and registration costs apply to the exact vehicle identification number?
Maserati’s US MC20 page includes dealer, inventory and configuration routes. Aston Martin’s local retailer network should be used for a DB12 quotation. Availability and terms must be checked directly in the intended market rather than inferred from a global page.

- Check access and visibility. Sit in both cars with the seat, steering wheel and mirrors adjusted. Note door clearance, sightlines at junctions and whether the seating position works for the driver who will use the car most.
- Try low-speed manoeuvres. Drive through a car park or narrow street and assess steering weight, pedal calibration, transmission smoothness and turning confidence.
- Use the available chassis controls. Ask the specialist to demonstrate DB12 damping settings and MC20 drive modes. On the MC20, operate the front-axle lift exactly as instructed and confirm the speed limit for its use.
- Evaluate the intended journey. Include motorway cruising, uneven urban surfaces and a sequence of safe bends. Do not confuse a brief acceleration run with a complete comfort or usability assessment.
- Inspect the seating and storage you actually need. If the DB12’s rear seats matter, place the intended passengers or child-seat equipment there. Measure the bags or cases you routinely carry instead of assuming a brochure category is sufficient.
- Obtain a written build sheet. Record tyres, brake specification, options, service terms and delivery status so that two quotations are genuinely comparable.
Which one fits which buyer?
Choose the DB12 brief when 2+2 flexibility matters
- You want a high-performance coupe with a front-mounted V8 and occasional rear-seat capacity.
- You value the Super Tourer concept and want adaptive damping listed as part of the equipment.
- You prefer a conventional automatic transmission description and want the option of carbon-ceramic brakes.
- Your decision depends on a touring-oriented format rather than a dedicated two-seat supercar cabin.
These are fit-based reasons, not proof that the DB12 is more comfortable, reliable or cheaper to run. Those claims need independent evidence for the relevant model year and country.
Choose the MC20 brief when a mid-engine supercar is the priority
- You want a carbon-fibre-monocoque, mid-engined two-seater built around a supercar layout.
- The Nettuno V6, dual-clutch transmission and four drive modes match your priorities.
- A 50 mm front-axle lift usable up to 40 km/h is valuable for your roads, ramps or parking arrangements.
- You are comfortable giving up the DB12’s additional seating in exchange for a more focused configuration.
Again, the hardware list does not settle questions about ride comfort, steering, traction, reliability or track performance. Those require a properly documented independent comparison.
Ownership questions that cannot be answered from these specifications
No dated, independent head-to-head evidence is provided by the cited sources for reliability, depreciation, residual value, insurance cost, servicing expense, dealer experience or long-term comfort. A sensible buyer should not treat a power figure or carbon-fibre claim as a proxy for any of those outcomes.
For a complete ownership decision, gather country-specific quotations from both authorised networks, obtain insurance estimates using the exact vehicle specification, and ask for the scheduled-maintenance interval and consumables policy in writing. If resale matters, compare documented transaction data for the same market, model year and option mix rather than relying on a general reputation.
Bottom line
The DB12 and MC20 serve different briefs. The DB12 is the 2+2, front-engined V8 Super Tourer; the MC20 is the mid-engined, carbon-fibre-monocoque V6 supercar. Maserati’s published US 0–60 claim is quicker than Aston Martin’s US narrative, but the acceleration conventions and test conditions are not a controlled comparison. Both manufacturers claim approximately 202 mph, and neither headline number establishes a winner in comfort, handling or ownership.
Choose the DB12 if its additional seating and touring-oriented format solve a real need. Choose the MC20 if the mid-engine layout, two-seat cabin, dual-clutch transmission, drive modes and axle-lift system are the features you will use. Confirm price, availability, service access and the exact option specification in your market before treating either as the better purchase.
