Short answer: Reliability depends heavily on the model year and the individual vehicle. Consumer Reports characterizes the 2024 Trax as about average for its class, the 2024 Trailblazer as more reliable than other cars from that model year, and the 2025 Trailblazer as about average. Those are survey-based, model-year assessments—not guarantees for every car. The most clearly documented issue is emission recall A242435780, affecting certain 2024 Trax and Trailblazer vehicles with the 1.2-liter engine. A vehicle-specific VIN check, complete service records, and an independent inspection are more useful than a blanket Trax-versus-Trailblazer ranking.
What the reliability evidence actually shows
There is no single reliability verdict that applies to every Chevrolet Trax or Trailblazer. The two nameplates have changed by model year, engine, trim and equipment, and survey results describe groups of vehicles rather than the exact car you may buy.

|---|---|---|
| 2024 Chevrolet Trax | About average compared with cars from the same model year | Neither an exceptional strength nor a documented outlier in the survey |
| 2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer | More reliable than other cars from the same model year | A favorable relative result for that model year |
| 2025 Chevrolet Trailblazer | About average compared with cars from the same model year | Do not assume the 2024 assessment carries over unchanged |
These descriptions are not failure percentages, warranty-claim rates or predictions for an individual vehicle. No standalone Trax- or Trailblazer-specific failure-rate figure has been verified here, and older model years should not be assigned one of these labels without year-specific evidence.
#1 Best Overall
- CEL Doctor: The ANCEL AD310 is one of the best-selling OBD II scanners on the market and is recommended by Scotty Kilmer, a YouTuber and auto mechanic. The AD310 is not only portable, but also accurate and fast in performance. Moreover, it covers various car brands and is suitable for people who just need a code reader to check their car
Reliability also includes how a vehicle has been treated. A well-maintained example with one owner, documented servicing and no warning lights can be a safer purchase than a lower-mileage car with accident damage, neglected fluids or unresolved campaigns. Conversely, a favorable model-year survey cannot compensate for poor maintenance on the particular car in front of you.
The confirmed issue: recall A242435780 on certain 2024 vehicles
Which vehicles are involved
General Motors issued emission recall A242435780 for certain 2024 Chevrolet Trax and Trailblazer vehicles equipped with the 1.2-liter gasoline engine. The wording “certain vehicles” matters: the campaign does not establish that every 2024 Trax or Trailblazer is affected. Applicability is determined by the vehicle identification number (VIN).
What can happen
GM says the engine control module (ECM) may not properly control ignition timing after certain Auto Engine Stop/Start events. If the condition occurs, the check-engine light may illuminate, the engine may run roughly, or the engine may knock. GM warns that continuing to drive while the engine is knocking could cause engine damage.

The remedy is an ECM software reprogramming performed by a Chevrolet dealer at no charge to the owner. GM’s June 2024 customer notice states: “Your GM dealer will reprogram the engine control module. This service will be performed for you at no charge.” Ask for the repair order showing that the campaign was completed, rather than relying on a seller’s verbal assurance.

Are there other “common problems” you can verify?
The available evidence does not substantiate a blanket list of widespread mechanical failures shared by both nameplates. The 1.2-liter ignition-timing recall is an official, clearly documented issue; owner complaints, online anecdotes and isolated repair bills should not be presented as proof that every Trax or Trailblazer has the same defect.
That distinction helps when you evaluate a used car. A survey rating describes reported experience across a model year. A safety or emission recall identifies a defined defect and a specified remedy. Neither tells you whether a specific vehicle has been maintained, damaged, modified or driven in a way that accelerated wear.
For older Trax or Trailblazer years, treat generalized internet statements cautiously. Confirm the engine and drivetrain in the vehicle you are considering, then look for records and VIN-specific campaigns. If a seller claims that a problem is “normal for the model,” ask for the diagnostic report and repair documentation instead of accepting the label.

Run the VIN through the federal recall lookup
Enter the 17-character VIN in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall-lookup service. NHTSA explains that its results show unrepaired safety recalls associated with that VIN. The database may not show a recall that was already repaired, a newly announced campaign before all VINs are identified, non-safety campaigns, or some older and international recalls. Save a screenshot or printout for your records.
-
Confirm campaign status with a Chevrolet dealer
Give the dealer the VIN and ask for open GM campaigns, including emission campaigns that may not appear in a general safety-recall search. For a 2024 vehicle with the 1.2-liter engine, request written confirmation that A242435780 was completed. A dealer can also tell you whether the ECM software update is already recorded in GM’s service system.
-
Read the service history, not just the mileage
Look for dated invoices, inspection sheets and parts records. Pay attention to repeated warning-light visits, unresolved diagnostic codes, engine or transmission work, electrical repairs, accident-related work and long gaps between services. Compare the odometer on each document with the vehicle’s current reading. A missing history is a reason to increase inspection time and reduce your confidence—not proof that the car is bad.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection
Use a shop that is not financially involved in the sale. Ask the technician to inspect the engine and transmission for leaks, scan all accessible control modules, check the underbody and suspension, assess brakes and tires, verify that warning lamps perform their normal bulb check, and look for repaired collision damage. Request the written findings and photographs. The inspection is an assessment of this vehicle; it cannot certify every future repair need.

Test the car from a cold start
Whenever possible, arrive before the engine has been warmed up. Observe the initial start, idle quality, exhaust, warning lamps and any unusual vibration or noise. During the drive, use urban stop-and-go traffic, a steady-speed section and a moderate acceleration. Pay attention to hesitation, harsh shifts, steering pull, brake pulsation, overheating indications and infotainment or camera failures. Repeat a stop/start transition if the system operates, but do not deliberately provoke a dangerous condition.
-
Use an OBD-II scanner only as a screening tool
A basic code reader can reveal stored or pending powertrain codes when a warning light or symptom exists. It cannot establish overall reliability, find every intermittent or hidden fault, prove that a recall was completed, or perform the dealer’s ECM reprogramming. A seller who clears codes immediately before your visit may also erase useful evidence; ask the inspector to check monitor readiness and code history where the equipment supports it.

| Comparison factor | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Model year | What year is each vehicle, and what reliability evidence exists for that year? | Survey assessments are model-year-specific and cannot automatically be carried to older or newer versions. |
| Engine | Does either vehicle have the 1.2-liter engine covered by the 2024 campaign? | Engine configuration determines whether recall A242435780 may apply. |
| Drivetrain and trim | Are the engines, transmissions, drive systems and equipment levels comparable? | Different configurations can have different service needs and failure opportunities. |
| Mileage and use | How many miles, and were they accumulated in commuting, towing, short trips or heavy stop-and-go use? | Odometer distance alone does not describe operating stress. |
| Service history | Are maintenance and repairs documented with dates and mileage? | Records reveal care quality and recurring symptoms that a test drive may miss. |
| Recall completion | Does the VIN show open campaigns, and does the dealer confirm completed work? | Open safety or emission work is a negotiation and repair issue before purchase. |
| Current condition | Does an independent inspection find leaks, codes, collision repairs or worn safety items? | The individual vehicle’s condition is more actionable than a broad model label. |
If one candidate has a better survey reputation but poorer records, unresolved lights or failed inspection items, choose the vehicle with stronger evidence of care—or keep shopping. If both pass inspection, price, equipment, driving position and space can decide the purchase; reliability data alone will not identify a universal winner.

Warning signs that should change the deal
Engine knock or rough running
On a 2024 Trax or Trailblazer with the 1.2-liter engine, engine knock, a check-engine light or rough running deserves prompt professional diagnosis. Do not assume a cheap code scan makes continued driving safe, particularly when the symptom follows an Auto Engine Stop/Start event.
Unexplained warning lights
Do not accept “the light just came on today” without a scan and written diagnosis. Ask whether the light was recently cleared and whether readiness monitors are complete. An incomplete monitor set can indicate that diagnostic information was erased shortly before the sale.
Repeated repairs with no root cause
Several invoices for the same symptom, especially intermittent starting, stalling, shifting or electrical faults, warrant a specialist’s review. A sequence of parts replacements is not the same as proof that the underlying problem was fixed.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Structural or water damage
Check panel alignment, paint texture, corrosion in unusual places, damp carpeting, inconsistent window operation and missing trim. These signs are not model-specific reliability ratings, but they can predict expensive ownership problems in any used vehicle.
How to make the decision
Buy only when three kinds of evidence agree: the VIN has no unresolved campaign that you are unwilling to repair, the records show reasonable care, and an independent inspection finds no unacceptable condition. If any one of those is missing, treat the car as an uncertainty and adjust your offer only if you have a written estimate and a realistic repair plan.
For a 2024 1.2-liter example, make the recall check a prerequisite rather than a post-purchase task. For other years and engines, continue the same process but do not transfer the 2024 campaign to vehicles that do not match its scope. Follow the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual after purchase, retain every invoice, and address new warning lights promptly; those habits give you better control over long-term reliability than a model-year slogan.
Bottom line
The Chevy Trax and Trailblazer are neither uniformly unreliable nor guaranteed trouble-free. Current evidence ranges from about average to better than peers depending on model year, while a specific car’s history and condition determine the real risk. Verify the VIN, confirm recall completion, investigate any knock or rough running, and pay for an independent inspection before you buy. That process is the most dependable answer to “Are the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer reliable?” for the vehicle in front of you.
