No confirmed electric car with an all-solid-state battery is currently available for consumers to buy, based on the evidence available as of October 4, 2026. Semi-solid batteries are already commercial, but they are not the same as all-solid-state batteries. Recent pilot-line and road-testing announcements mark development progress—not a car you can order.
What counts as a solid-state battery?
“Solid-state” is used for several battery designs, so the label alone does not establish what a car contains. The International Energy Agency distinguishes commercial semi-solid batteries from almost-solid-state and all-solid-state designs.

- Semi-solid: Uses a solid polymer electrolyte that operates at elevated temperatures. These batteries are already commercial, but should not be described as all-solid-state.
- Almost-solid-state: Uses a mechanically rigid solid electrolyte but may retain small amounts of liquid electrolyte at the cathode.
- All-solid-state: Uses a mechanically rigid solid electrolyte; the IEA describes this and almost-solid-state designs as still at the prototype stage.
The IEA associates frequently cited safety benefits with almost- or all-solid-state designs. Those potential benefits do not mean the technology is already available in retail cars, or that every battery marketed with a “solid-state” label has the same construction.

Why announcements do not mean you can buy one
Battery development has several steps between an early cell and a car on sale. A pilot line, customer samples, or road tests can be important milestones, but none by itself confirms a consumer vehicle, a retail delivery date, or production at scale.
#1 Best Overall
- BATTERY SPECS: 12-Volt, 720 Cold Cranking Amps, Size: 9.38" Long x 6.75" Wide x 7.69" Tall, Weight: 31.7 pounds, SAE Post Terminals, C20 Capacity: 44 AH
- RESERVE CAPACITY of 90 minutes for constant performance. Faster charging capabilities.
- SPIRALCELL TECHNOLOGY: SPIRALCELL TECHNOLOGY with 99.99% pure lead delivers more power and consistently outperforms conventional flat-plate batteries. Optimal starting power even in bad weather.
- LONG LASTING: Fifteen times more resistant to vibration than standard flooded battieres for durability and Up to 3 times longer life vs. standard flooded batteries.
- MAINTENANCE FREE: For maximum convenience. Ideal for basic electrical demands.
| Development evidence | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Prototype or laboratory cell | A design is being developed and evaluated. | That it can be manufactured at automotive scale or is in a retail vehicle. |
| Pilot line or customer sampling | A company is preparing cells for sampling, testing, demonstrations, or integration. | High-volume production, a confirmed vehicle launch, or consumer availability. |
| Integrated development vehicle and road testing | Cells have been incorporated into a vehicle for development work and testing. | Production validation, a model going on sale, or deliveries to customers. |
| Retail vehicle availability | A specific vehicle is orderable or being delivered in a named market. | Availability in other countries or proof that its battery is all-solid-state unless the automaker identifies it that way. |
What the recent company milestones show
Toyota: a 2027–2028 target, not a car on sale
Toyota says it is developing a mass-production method and striving to commercialize solid-state batteries in 2027–2028. That is a company target, not a guaranteed launch date or evidence that a qualifying car is already available. Toyota and Idemitsu also announced plans to advance pilot-facility and mass-production work, with a market-launch aim in the same period.
On September 6, 2024, Toyota said Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry had certified its all-solid-state battery research and production plan. That certification concerns a plan; the announcement does not name an all-solid-state vehicle already for sale. It also mentions a gradual start in 2026 for a separate next-generation performance-battery plan, which should not be mistaken for an all-solid-state car launch.
Toyota and Idemitsu describe durability as a challenge. Toyota president and CEO Koji Sato said, “On the other hand, the biggest challenge is durability.” The announcement explains that repeated charging and discharging can cause cracks between electrodes and solid electrolytes, potentially degrading performance. This is Toyota’s account of a development challenge, not proof that durability is the sole obstacle for every design.
QuantumScape: pilot production for development
On February 4, 2026, QuantumScape inaugurated its Eagle pilot line. The company said the line, once ramped up, would produce cells for customer sampling, testing, demonstrations, and product integration. That is a pilot-production milestone, not an announcement of a retail vehicle. QuantumScape also identifies high-volume scale-up and commercialization as forward-looking risks.
Stellantis and Factorial: road testing in a development vehicle
On June 11, 2026, Stellantis and Factorial announced that they had integrated solid-state cells into a development vehicle and begun road testing and calibration. They describe continuing development and industrialization work. Testing a development car is not the same as confirming a production model or making one available for purchase.
Honda and QuantumScape: research collaboration
On June 18, 2026, QuantumScape announced a joint research agreement with Honda on solid-state battery technology. The announcement documents collaboration, not a vehicle launch or consumer availability.
What still has to be solved before mass-market use
The IEA says manufacturing all-solid-state batteries is more complex and costly than manufacturing lithium-ion cells. Integrating them into a battery pack also brings stricter mechanical requirements, including higher operating pressure. A successful cell or pilot line therefore does not, on its own, show that a company can produce affordable, durable packs at the volume required for car sales.

The IEA expects all-solid-state batteries to remain limited to premium segments until the first half of the 2030s. This is a forecast, not a report of observed sales or a firm timetable for any particular automaker. Toyota’s 2027–2028 target is likewise a plan rather than a confirmed delivery date.

When a headline says a solid-state car has arrived, check the details that separate a development announcement from a retail offer:
Quick Recap
- Battery category: Is it semi-solid, almost-solid-state, or all-solid-state? Does the description say whether any liquid electrolyte remains?
- Development stage: Is the announcement about a lab cell, a pilot line, customer samples, a development vehicle, road testing, production validation, or actual retail deliveries?
- Market and date: Does it identify a specific vehicle, country, order date, and delivery status? A target year alone is not a sale.
- Manufacturing evidence: Does the company report demonstrated production, or only planned capacity and future scale-up?
- Source quality: Prefer dated automaker, battery-maker, or regulator statements over headlines that repeat a claim without specifying the battery type or sales stage.
