Are Self-Driving Trucks the Key to Supply Chain Issues?

Autonomous trucks could help move freight between hubs for longer periods, but they cannot fix supply-chain bottlenecks across the network on their own.

No—not on their own. Self-driving trucks could add capacity on predictable highway routes by operating for longer periods without driver rest breaks. But they cannot resolve delays caused by limited terminal capacity, slow loading, weak infrastructure, poor coordination, or disruptions elsewhere in the freight network. The most plausible early role is a targeted one: moving freight between hubs, as one part of a larger supply-chain system.

Where autonomous trucks could help first

Highway freight between fixed hubs is a more practical early application than complex urban or door-to-door delivery. These routes are comparatively predictable, which makes it easier to define where and under what conditions a truck can operate. Dense city streets and variable point-to-point routes present harder technical and regulatory challenges.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) says the first autonomous trucks on public roads began commercial operation in the United States in 2025. That marks early commercial activity, not broad deployment across the freight industry. The IEA also cites a forecast that autonomous trucks could account for up to one-quarter of truck sales for hub-to-hub logistics by 2035 across the United States, Europe, and China. This is a forecast, not an observed market share or a guarantee.

Deployment scenario Why it may be a fit—or a hurdle
Fixed hub-to-hub highway route Predictable routes and highway driving make this the more plausible early use case; the IEA identifies hub-to-hub freight as a likely application.
Complex point-to-point or urban delivery More variable routes and dense urban conditions bring higher technical and regulatory hurdles, according to the IEA.

Why more truck operating hours do not automatically mean fewer delays

Because an autonomous truck does not need a human driver’s rest breaks, it may be able to spend more time moving freight. That could improve vehicle utilization and, in regions with high wages or driver shortages, strengthen the business case. But a truck’s travel time is only one part of a shipment’s journey.

Freight still has to be loaded and unloaded, transferred through terminals, dispatched, and connected to the systems that coordinate shipments. If a trailer is waiting for a dock, a terminal is congested, or a first- or last-mile leg is delayed, extra highway operating hours may not get the goods to their destination sooner. The IEA notes that autonomous freight must be integrated with terminal operations and logistics processes; it does not establish a system-wide reduction in delays or costs.

Electric autonomy also depends on charging

For an electric truck, eliminating driver rest periods may allow greater vehicle use, but charging downtime can become a constraint instead. The IEA names battery swapping, megawatt-scale charging, and charging at warehouses as possible approaches. These options require infrastructure and careful coordination with freight operations; they are not proof that charging bottlenecks have already been solved.

Safety remains a deployment responsibility

Automation may reduce some crashes and human error, but that potential should not be confused with a demonstrated safety outcome across every route or operating condition. Testing, operating limits, cybersecurity, and questions of liability and insurance remain relevant. NHTSA says vehicles currently available for sale in the United States are not fully automated, and driver-assistance features are not the same as driverless freight operations.

What could change for truck drivers

The effect on trucking jobs is uncertain, not a simple prediction that automation will replace drivers. In 2019, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) described competing possibilities: automation might reduce demand for long-haul drivers, or operators might remain responsible for complex driving and other tasks as their skills and roles change. Stakeholders disagreed about employment, wages, and retention.

The GAO said automated trucking could eventually affect a workforce of nearly 1.9 million heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers. That figure describes the population in scope for its analysis; it is not a count of jobs expected to disappear. The report also said most stakeholders it consulted thought automation could create new jobs and that workforce effects would take time. Its deployment timing expectations from 2019 should not be treated as a current forecast.

What supply-chain resilience requires beyond trucks

Freight resilience also depends on infrastructure capacity, planning, data and research, governance, workforce support, and coordination between public and private organizations. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s freight assessment addresses these broader vulnerabilities and measures; it does not present truck automation as a stand-alone cure.

  • Infrastructure: Roads, terminals, and charging facilities must support the movements a fleet is expected to make.
  • Operations: Loading, unloading, dispatch, and connections with other transport modes must work with the vehicle’s operating model.
  • Information and oversight: Data sharing, safety oversight, cybersecurity, and clear responsibility matter alongside the driving technology.
  • Workforce: Training and planning can help workers and employers adapt as roles or skill requirements change.

What is—and is not—established

Autonomous trucks may improve capacity on selected, predictable highway routes, particularly where longer operating periods have economic value. The evidence cited here does not establish a quantified net reduction in supply-chain delays or costs across the freight system, or show that early deployments perform consistently across routes, weather, jurisdictions, freight types, and terminal configurations.

For that reason, the practical question is not whether self-driving trucks can fix supply chains by themselves. It is whether a particular route, terminal network, fleet, safety framework, and workforce model can use them effectively as one component of a broader freight system.
