The notices reviewed for Waymo and Tesla describe trip and location records, vehicle sensors that include cameras, and circumstances in which some information may be reviewed or disclosed. That is documented data collection, not proof of covert surveillance. The details vary by operator and ride type, and the privacy assurances discussed here are company statements, not independent audits.
What “spying” means in a robotaxi
A ride service needs information to connect a rider with a vehicle and carry out the trip. Its vehicles may also use cameras and other sensors to navigate, support safety, or respond to a service issue. Those practices can involve collecting information about riders and people or places outside the car, but they do not by themselves establish that an operator is secretly monitoring riders.

The key distinctions are what information is collected, whether it is tied to an account, when a sensor is active, who can access the data, how long it is retained, and whether it can be disclosed. The available notices describe some of these points, but they do not provide a complete, independently verified account of every data flow.

What the reviewed operators say they collect
The following comparison reflects the privacy notices and help materials reviewed as of October 8, 2026. It covers Waymo and Tesla only; it is not a survey of every robotaxi service. “Not stated” means the cited materials do not establish that detail, not that the practice never occurs.

Are robotaxis recording inside the car?
The answer depends on the operator, the ride, and the sensor. Waymo’s policy lists interior video during trips, and its help material describes circumstances in which staff may review or access video. Tesla distinguishes ordinary rides from limited-area early access: its notice says cabin-camera analytics are not used by default on ordinary rides until specified needs arise, while early-access rides involve additional default collection.
Those descriptions do not support a blanket claim that every ride is continuously watched by a person, or that cabin recording is always off. Nor do they establish what happens in every vehicle, service area, or incident. They describe the companies’ stated practices.

Do self-driving taxis listen to conversations?
Waymo’s statement about cabin microphones is specific: it says they are on during calls with Rider Support or when a rider actively enables them. The separate use of audio detection for emergency sirens does not, on its own, establish that ordinary conversations are recorded or sent for review; Waymo says technical and procedural safeguards are designed to limit collection of human voice data from those microphones.

Tesla’s notice distinguishes routine rides from early access and specified support or safety circumstances. It says sound-detection data is collected by default for early-access rides, while ordinary rides do not use cabin sound detection by default until specified reasons apply. The reviewed notice does not establish a universal rule for how audio is processed or transmitted in every situation.

Can police get robotaxi footage or trip data?
Both companies describe circumstances in which they may disclose data to meet legal obligations or respond to government requests. Waymo says agencies should use valid legal process; it also describes disclosure to comply with legal requirements, enforce agreements, or protect safety. Tesla’s notice describes disclosures to satisfy legal obligations and government requests.
The notices reviewed do not report how many requests either company receives, how many it challenges, or how often a request results in disclosure. A policy describing possible disclosure is not evidence of a particular request or release.

Can you delete trip data or request camera footage?
Waymo account data
Waymo says account holders can download or delete personal information. Its policy also says account-associated trip history is retained while the account remains active, subject to legal and stated legitimate-business exceptions. The materials do not provide one deletion deadline for every kind of data.
Waymo exterior-camera requests
For individuals in Canada and Europe, Waymo provides a separate request route for certain external-camera data. Its form says an access request returns approximately 30 seconds of blurred video and requires a specific location, date, and time. This process should not be assumed to apply to every bystander, country, or type of recording.

Tesla data controls
The reviewed Tesla notice describes retention and disclosure criteria, but does not establish a comparable account download or deletion process in the material reviewed here. That does not show that no such controls exist; it means the notice alone does not answer that question.
