Usually not if lower fuel bills are your main reason for choosing one. A plug-in hybrid ute (PHEV) can post a very low official consumption figure because the test includes substantial battery use. If you seldom plug in, the petrol engine supplies far more of the work, and real consumption can be much higher. The Australian BYD Shark 6 shows why: its 2025 specification lists 2 L/100km in the battery-assisted part of the test and 7.9 L/100km below the stated battery state-of-charge threshold, while one NRMA road test recorded 18.4 L/100km with a 70% battery reserve.
That does not make every PHEV ute a bad purchase. Performance, towing, payload, quiet electric running and occasional electric commuting may still matter. The sensible approach is to assess it as a petrol hybrid when charging will be rare, then check whether its low-charge consumption, price and ute capability suit your actual work.

The direct answer: rare charging weakens the value case
A PHEV ute earns its additional battery and charging hardware when you regularly use that battery. Home or workplace charging can replace petrol on short trips, particularly in urban traffic. If the vehicle is almost never connected, that electric capacity is mostly dead weight after its usable charge is gone. You still carry the battery, power electronics and cooling hardware, but the engine must propel the vehicle and recharge or maintain the pack.
Therefore, do not decide from the smallest number in a brochure. Use the exact model’s low-charge figure, independent tests made with a depleted battery, and your own mix of speeds, loads, towing and terrain. There is no single guaranteed “no-charge” consumption number: reserve settings and test conditions can change the result substantially.

Why a PHEV’s headline fuel figure can mislead
Two operating states are being combined
Plug-in hybrid test procedures begin with a charged battery. The car drives some distance electrically, then uses petrol. A combined result averages those phases, so it describes a particular test cycle with battery contribution; it is not a prediction for a vehicle that is never plugged in.
BYD Australia’s 2025 sheet for the 1.5-litre Shark 6 lists 2 L/100km combined fuel consumption above its stated battery state-of-charge threshold and 7.9 L/100km below that threshold. The 2 L/100km value must not be treated as a no-charge estimate. The 7.9 L/100km figure is the relevant official starting point once the battery is below the specified threshold, but it remains a laboratory result.
Laboratory figures are not promises
BYD says its ADR 81/02 fuel-consumption figures can differ from real use because of driving style, vehicle operation, journey type, environment, climate, battery condition and other factors. Highway speed, headwinds, cold weather, payload, roof accessories, tyre pressure and trailer weight can all move a ute’s consumption well away from its test result.

| Source and date | Vehicle or condition | Fuel-use result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| BYD Australia specification, 2025 | 1.5-litre Shark 6; battery above the stated state-of-charge threshold | 2 L/100km combined | Battery-assisted test result; not a no-charge estimate |
| BYD Australia specification, 2025 | 1.5-litre Shark 6; battery below the stated threshold | 7.9 L/100km | Official low-charge figure to use when comparing with other vehicles |
| BYD Australia specification, 2025 | Battery and charging hardware | 29.58 kWh battery; 100 km NEDC electric range; 7 kW AC and 55 kW DC charging | Published capacity and ranges for that specification sheet |
| NRMA review, 2025 | Shark 6 set to maintain a 70% battery reserve | 18.4 L/100km | One road-test result under a particular reserve strategy and conditions, not a forecast for every owner |
| CarExpert test, 2025 | Week-long driving with the battery low for much of the time | Described as around the low-battery official figure | Real-world support for using the low-charge figure as a planning reference |
| CarsGuide test, 2025 | Mixed freeway and electric-city driving; battery depleted during the drive | About 6.5 L/100km | Useful context, but not a controlled never-plugged-in result |
| BYD Australia specification, 2026 | Updated listed variants and test cycles | 7.9 L/100km NEDC and 10.5 L/100km WLTP low-charge figures | Do not mix these cycle-specific figures with the 2025 1.5-litre ratings |
The 18.4 L/100km NRMA result is not evidence that every Shark 6 will use 18.4 L/100km. It demonstrates how a deliberate high reserve can force the engine to do more work. Conversely, the approximately 6.5 L/100km CarsGuide result included electric driving before the battery depleted, so it should not be presented as a permanent no-charge rate.
What “rarely charge” means in practice
If you charge once a week
A weekly charge may cover some short trips, but the benefit depends on distance driven between charges and whether those trips occur before the battery is depleted. A long commute, highway work or towing can consume the charge quickly. Record your actual weekly kilometres and the share that could be covered after one charge; do not assume the published 100 km NEDC range equals your usable real-world distance.
If you charge only on trips or at public stations
Occasional charging can still reduce petrol use on those specific journeys. It is unlikely to transform annual fuel costs if most kilometres are completed with a low battery. Public charging also adds time and an electricity price that varies by site; the available evidence does not establish a universal charging-cost threshold or break-even point.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Ask whether a dependable workplace or destination charger is available during your normal schedule. If charging requires a special detour, queuing or an unreliable outlet, assume you will use it less than planned and evaluate the ute using its low-charge operation.

How to decide whether one suits your driving
- Define the duty cycle. Separate city errands, suburban commuting, sustained highway travel, off-road work, carrying a payload and towing. Electric assistance is most useful on short, stop-start trips; steady high-speed and heavy-load work generally demands more engine energy.
- Measure charging access. Note where the vehicle can be plugged in, how many hours it can remain there, and how often that opportunity occurs. A 7 kW AC port is practical only when the vehicle is parked near suitable supply for long enough; a 55 kW DC port can shorten a stop but does not make charging free or universally convenient.
- Use the exact low-charge data. Obtain the specification for your model year and trim. For the 2026 sheet, keep the 7.9 L/100km NEDC and 10.5 L/100km WLTP values labelled by cycle. Do not compare a 2025 NEDC figure directly with a 2026 WLTP figure as though the tests were identical.
- Stress-test the estimate. Compare the official low-charge value with independent results, including the NRMA’s 18.4 L/100km reserve test and the CarExpert low-battery week. Treat the spread as a warning that reserve strategy, route and load matter.
- Check the ute job. Confirm payload, braked towing, tow-ball download, axle limits and the rating when the vehicle is loaded. A vehicle that saves fuel but cannot legally carry or tow your normal load is not suitable.
- Calculate annual cost with your inputs. Use your local purchase price, annual kilometres, petrol price, electricity tariff, charging frequency and servicing or finance costs. The available figures do not support a universal break-even distance.
Payload and towing: the battery is not the only trade-off
The 2025 1.5-litre Shark 6 specification lists 2,500 kg braked towing. NRMA describes a 790 kg payload for the model it reviewed. Treat both as model-specific references, not guarantees for every trim or year. Payload is the legal maximum for occupants and cargo combined; a heavy tow-ball load uses part of it. Accessories, a canopy, tools, passengers and a full tank also reduce the remaining margin.
Before signing, obtain the exact vehicle’s compliance plate and towing documentation. Match the trailer’s loaded mass, tow-ball mass, braking system and intended terrain to those limits. Ask the dealer how the rating applies when the ute is near its gross vehicle mass, because a headline towing number alone does not describe a safe loaded combination.
Running-cost comparison without false precision
Build a simple spreadsheet rather than relying on the 2 L/100km headline. For petrol, multiply annual kilometres by the low-charge litres-per-100-kilometre figure, divide by 100, and multiply by your local petrol price. For electricity, estimate the kilometres actually driven electrically, divide by the vehicle’s measured energy use, and multiply by your electricity tariff and charging losses. If you do not know those values, use a range and show how the result changes when charging falls from weekly to monthly.

| Input | What to enter | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Annual distance | Your odometer-based kilometres | Short trips and occasional use may not justify a large battery premium |
| Low-charge consumption | Exact model-year figure plus a higher real-world sensitivity case | Prevents the charged-test number from dominating the estimate |
| Charging frequency | Actual home, workplace and public charging sessions | Determines how much of the battery is used rather than carried |
| Petrol price | Your local average or a conservative range | Fuel-price changes alter savings |
| Electricity cost | Tariff plus likely charging losses and public-session fees | “Electric” kilometres are not free |
| Purchase and finance cost | Quotes for the exact trim and comparable conventional ute | Up-front cost can outweigh operating savings |
| Work requirements | Payload, towing, ground clearance and range under load | A cheaper per-kilometre result is irrelevant if the vehicle cannot do the job |
Use two or three scenarios—regular charging, occasional charging and almost never charging. If the PHEV only beats the alternative in the regular-charging case, it is a poor fuel-economy purchase for your stated habit.

When a PHEV ute can still be worthwhile without frequent charging
- You value performance. Electric motors can provide immediate torque and strong acceleration even when fuel economy is not your priority.
- Your trips are mostly short and urban. Even imperfect charging access may allow some quiet, electric running before the engine becomes the main source of power.
- You need its particular capability. Confirm the exact towing and payload ratings, rather than assuming the battery-equipped model is equivalent to another ute.
- You expect charging access to improve. A home, workplace or fleet charger planned within your ownership period can change the economics, but do not pay today for a benefit you have no practical way to use.
- You accept higher fuel use as the price of the package. If refinement, equipment or drivetrain behaviour matters more than minimum running cost, the PHEV may meet your priorities.
When a conventional ute is the more rational choice
A non-plug-in petrol or diesel ute is generally easier to evaluate when your work is dominated by long highway runs, heavy towing, remote travel or irregular parking. You are not carrying a large plug-in battery for kilometres you cannot recharge, and the purchase decision can focus on proven loaded fuel use, payload, towing support and service coverage.
This is not a claim that every conventional ute will be cheaper. Compare like-for-like purchase prices, equipment, warranty terms, fuel consumption under your load and the cost of any required accessories. The key is that a PHEV’s electric advantage should be counted only for kilometres you can realistically drive electrically.
Buying checklist for a rarely charged PHEV ute
- Write down the exact model year, engine, trim and test cycle on every consumption quote.
- Ask the seller for the low-charge consumption figure, not only the combined plug-in number.
- Request a demonstration drive with a low battery and, if relevant, the reserve setting you would use.
- Check whether the vehicle starts the engine to protect a reserve and how that setting changes fuel use.
- Confirm home or workplace electrical capacity, charging cable compatibility and parking access before purchase.
- Verify braked towing, payload, tow-ball download and gross vehicle mass for the exact vehicle.
- Calculate costs with your annual distance, local fuel and electricity prices, and realistic charging frequency.
- Compare the result with a suitable conventional ute and include finance, insurance, servicing and resale assumptions.
- Test the vehicle with representative passengers, tools or trailer loads; an unloaded test can hide the effect of mass and drag.
- Keep a fuel-and-charge log during the first several weeks. If actual low-battery consumption is much higher than your estimate, revisit the ownership case while return or change options remain available.
Common mistakes to avoid
Using 2 L/100km as your budget number
That figure belongs to the battery-assisted portion of the 2025 specification’s test basis. It is not what the ute is expected to consume after the battery contribution is exhausted.

Calling one road test “the” no-charge result
The 18.4 L/100km NRMA figure and the approximately 6.5 L/100km CarsGuide figure were produced in different conditions. One used a 70% reserve strategy; the other included electric-city driving before depletion. Use them as a range of possible outcomes, not as competing official ratings.

Mixing model years and cycles
The 2026 sheet lists NEDC and WLTP low-charge values for updated variants. A 2025 1.5-litre rating and a 2026 WLTP figure may describe different variants and test procedures. Record the label exactly.
Ignoring the ute’s payload while chasing fuel savings
Tools, passengers, accessories and trailer mass can consume payload quickly. Confirm legal limits before comparing fuel cost per kilometre.
Bottom line
If you rarely charge, buy a plug-in hybrid ute only when its capability, performance or occasional electric driving justifies the price and the higher uncertainty in low-battery fuel use. For a fuel-saving decision, compare the exact model’s low-charge figure and independent low-battery tests with a conventional ute under your real load. The Shark 6 data shows why: the 2025 official figures range from 2 L/100km in a battery-assisted test to 7.9 L/100km below the stated threshold, while one reserve-controlled road test reached 18.4 L/100km. Charging regularly is what makes the plug-in system’s efficiency advantage meaningful.
