Used-car reviews describe the 1998–2005 Clio as average for reliability, the 2005–2013 Clio as reasonable but vulnerable to electrical faults and neglected cambelts, and the 2013–2019 Clio as generally reasonable with reported suspension and electrical problems. Evidence for the Modus is strongest around vehicle-specific recall checks. There is no defensible single annual ownership-cost figure for all older Renault small cars.
The sensible approach is to identify the exact car, verify scheduled work and recalls, test every system, obtain an independent inspection when records or symptoms raise doubts, and compare the purchase price with written estimates for overdue repairs.

What “older Renault small car” covers
The phrase can mean several unrelated cars and generations. A 1998 Clio with an automatic gearbox has different risks from a 2012 diesel Clio, and neither should be judged by the experience of a 2006 Modus or a Twingo. Model-year boundaries, engines, equipment and recall campaigns can also vary by market.

Survey results and used-car reviews describe patterns, not guarantees. A well-maintained high-mileage car can be a better purchase than a newer example with missing records, warning lights or deferred maintenance.
Reliability by Renault small-car generation
| Car and years | What the available evidence says | Priority checks |
|---|---|---|
| Clio, 1998–2005 | Rated average for quality and reliability in the JD Power survey cited by a What Car? review updated 1 January 2006. Engine, suspension, brakes and electrical faults were identified as weaker areas; automatic gearboxes were not particularly strong. | Suspension and brakes, electrics, engine behavior, automatic-shift quality, recall history and bonnet-release operation. |
| Clio, 2005–2013 | Described as reasonable but not exceptional. Electrical faults were relatively common. The standard car had relatively few major faults in the cited review, while diesel versions were mechanically more complex. | All electrical equipment, warning lights, service invoices and the exact engine’s cambelt schedule. |
| Clio, 2013–2019 | Reported to have a reasonable reliability record, with axle or suspension and electrical faults among the more common issues in Reliability Index data. The review did not identify a major, consistent fault affecting every car. | Suspension knocks, electric windows, touchscreen, service-book stamps and automatic-gearbox operation. |
| Modus, 2004–2012 | The most useful evidence concerns recalls rather than a quantified recurring-fault rate. | Vehicle-specific recall status, steering-column work and the applicable automatic-gearbox campaign. |
| Twingo and other Renault small cars | No opened, generation-specific evidence in the available material supports transferring Clio or Modus fault lists to these models. | Use checks for the exact generation, engine, transmission and market. |
Renault Clio 1998–2005: inspect age-related mechanical and electrical faults
The first-generation range covered here was described as average for quality and reliability in the JD Power results cited by What Car? in a review updated 1 January 2006. Warranty Direct data referenced in that review highlighted suspension, brakes and electrics, while engine problems were also cited. Automatic gearboxes were described as not particularly strong.
Suspension, brakes and steering
At this age, a road test matters more than a clean-looking body. Listen for knocking over broken surfaces, clunks when turning or braking, and vibration through the steering wheel. Check that the car tracks straight and that braking is even. Uneven tyre wear can point to worn suspension or alignment problems rather than simply old tyres.

Electrical equipment
Operate every switch, lamp, heater setting, wiper speed, dashboard warning indicator and central-locking function. Intermittent faults are easy to miss during a short viewing and can be expensive to trace when wiring, switches or control modules are involved.
Engine and gearbox
Start the engine from cold if possible. Look for difficult starting, unstable idling, excessive smoke, overheating or warning lights. Test an automatic transmission both cold and warm; delayed engagement, harsh shifts or slipping deserve specialist diagnosis before purchase.

Historical recall and bonnet checks
Some 1998 and 1999 cars were affected by an accelerator-cable fault, and the review separately noted reports involving bonnet-release catches. These are checks for particular vehicles, not proof that every Clio from those years has the defect. Confirm applicability and completion using the car’s identification details and documentary evidence.
Renault Clio 2005–2013: service records and cambelt evidence are decisive
The 2005–2013 Clio was assessed as reasonable rather than exceptional in the cited What Car? review, updated 1 December 2016. Electrical faults were described as relatively common, and the review stressed regular servicing and proof of cambelt replacement where the engine requires one. It also reported relatively few major faults on the standard Clio, while diesel versions bring greater mechanical complexity.
Verify the exact cambelt requirement
Do not assume every engine uses the same belt, interval or replacement parts. Ask for the manufacturer’s schedule for the exact engine and look for an invoice showing the belt work, not merely a verbal assurance. If the interval has been reached or the evidence is missing, treat the work as an immediate budget item.
A neglected cambelt can fail without a convenient warning. Internal engine damage may follow, and the historical guide warns that the resulting repair bill can exceed the car’s value. The available material does not provide a current repair quote, so obtain a local written estimate before deciding whether an apparently cheap car is actually economical.
Test electrical systems methodically
Check the dashboard for warning lights during the ignition-on self-test and after the engine starts. Test windows, mirrors, locks, lights, ventilation, audio equipment and any display. Electrical problems may be minor, but a car with several non-functioning systems has a higher risk of diagnostic and repair costs.

Allow for diesel complexity
Diesel variants have more mechanical systems to assess than a simple petrol car. Confirm servicing and investigate smoke, poor starting, unusual noises, warning lights or hesitant acceleration. A diesel with incomplete records should not automatically be rejected, but its purchase price must leave room for a more thorough inspection.
Renault Clio 2013–2019: reasonable record, with suspension and electrical checks
A What Car? review updated 4 May 2020 described this generation as having a reasonable reliability record. Reliability Index data identified axle or suspension and electrical faults among the more common problems. The same assessment did not report a major or consistent fault affecting every car, so “reasonable” should not be read as “fault-free.”
Listen for suspension knocks
Drive over a range of surfaces at low speed and listen for knocks from the front or rear. Pay attention to noises when entering a driveway at an angle, braking, accelerating and turning. A lift inspection can identify worn components that a test drive cannot distinguish reliably.
Check the touchscreen and windows
Start the touchscreen repeatedly, test its main functions and check that it responds consistently. Operate every electric window from each relevant switch. A system that works only intermittently should be recorded as a fault rather than dismissed as a software quirk.
Demand a complete service history
Insist on a fully stamped service book and supporting invoices where available. Check that mileage entries are consistent and that gaps are explained. Test an automatic gearbox carefully and seek specialist advice if it hesitates, shifts harshly or behaves differently once warm.

Renault Modus 2004–2012: recall verification is the main evidence-led check
The available Modus material does not establish a universal recurring fault or a typical annual ownership cost. Its strongest practical value is identifying recall campaigns that must be checked against the individual vehicle.
Steering-column campaign
Some vehicles built from August 2004 through May 2005 were subject to steering-column work. Confirm whether the car falls within the relevant build details and whether the work was completed.
Automatic-gearbox campaign
Some 1.6-litre petrol cars built in November 2004 were recalled because they could slip out of Park. If viewing an automatic Modus, verify the build information, recall status and repair record before purchase.
Recall applicability is vehicle-specific. A seller’s statement that “all recalls were done” is weaker than a written confirmation tied to the vehicle identification number or an official national recall record.

What about the Twingo and other Renault small cars?
The available evidence does not provide a substantive, generation-specific Twingo reliability guide suitable for precise claims. Do not copy Clio or Modus fault lists onto a Twingo. The right checks depend on its generation, engine, transmission, market, mileage and maintenance history.

The same caution applies to other Renault city cars. A broad make-wide verdict such as “old Renaults are unreliable” ignores the differences between engines, gearboxes, production years and individual owners’ maintenance.
Ownership costs: what you can budget with confidence
No reliable current annual ownership-cost figure is established for the whole range. Repair prices vary with country, labour rate, parts choice, engine and vehicle condition, while fuel, insurance, road tax and inspection rules depend on the driver and location.
Instead of relying on an unsupported average, separate your budget into three groups:
| Cost group | What to include | How to estimate it |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate catch-up work | Overdue service, cambelt where applicable, tyres, brakes, suspension, fluids and diagnostic investigation. | Obtain written local quotes before purchase and subtract the total from the price you are prepared to pay. |
| Routine running costs | Fuel, insurance, road tax, periodic inspection and normal servicing. | Use the exact registration, engine, annual mileage and local rates; these cannot be represented by one range-wide figure. |
| Contingency | Unexpected electrical, gearbox, engine or recall-related work not covered by a campaign. | Keep a reserve appropriate to the car’s age and value, especially when records are incomplete. |
On a low-value older car, one major repair can exceed the vehicle’s market value. That does not make every repair irrational, but it means the decision should be based on the car’s condition and replacement alternatives rather than sunk costs or a low advertised price.
Step-by-step buying inspection
- Identify the exact specification. Record the model generation, engine, transmission, build date, mileage and registration market. These details determine which service and recall checks apply.
- Request documentary history. Ask for invoices, service entries, inspection records and evidence of major scheduled work. Treat verbal assurances as unverified until supported by paperwork.
- Check cambelt requirements. For relevant Clio engines, confirm the manufacturer’s schedule and look for dated proof of replacement. If the work is due or undocumented, price it before making an offer.
- Verify recalls by vehicle. Contact Renault or the appropriate national recall authority with the vehicle details. Ask for written confirmation of completed work where possible.
- Test every electrical function. Check warning lights, windows, locks, lights, ventilation, displays, touchscreen functions and accessories. Record intermittent behavior.
- Test the car cold and warm. Look for difficult starting, smoke, overheating, warning lights, poor idle, hesitation, clutch issues or abnormal automatic shifts.
- Drive over varied surfaces. Listen for suspension or axle knocks, test braking and steering, and inspect for uneven tyre wear, leaks or poor alignment.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Use a qualified inspector or marque specialist when records are incomplete or you find a warning light, noise, leak, unusual tyre wear or gearbox symptom.
- Compare price with repair estimates. Add all confirmed and probable work to the purchase price. Walk away if the total no longer makes sense compared with another inspected car.
How to compare two older Renaults
Do not choose by generation alone. Score both cars against the same evidence:
| Comparison point | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| History | Are servicing, mileage and major repairs supported by invoices? |
| Scheduled maintenance | Is the exact engine’s cambelt or other time-based work documented? |
| Recalls | Has the individual vehicle’s recall status been confirmed? |
| Mechanical condition | Are the engine, clutch, gearbox, brakes and suspension quiet and consistent? |
| Electrical condition | Do all controls, displays, windows, locks and warning-light systems work? |
| Inspection findings | What does an independent inspection identify, and what will it cost? |
| Adjusted price | What is the asking price plus overdue work, compared with the alternative? |
A newer car is not automatically the better buy. A slightly older Renault with complete records, a documented cambelt and a clean inspection may carry less financial risk than a newer example with neglected servicing.
When should you walk away?
- The seller cannot explain major gaps in the history or refuses an independent inspection.
- A cambelt is due or undocumented and the price does not leave room for the work.
- Multiple electrical systems fail, warning lights remain illuminated or faults return after clearing.
- The gearbox slips, hesitates or shifts harshly, particularly when warm.
- Suspension noises, uneven tyre wear, braking problems or leaks are ignored by the seller.
- The estimated repairs push the total cost above a comparable, better-documented car.
Bottom line for buyers
Older Renault small cars are neither uniformly unreliable nor automatically cheap to own. The 1998–2005 Clio needs careful checks of suspension, brakes, electrics, engine and automatic transmission; the 2005–2013 Clio makes cambelt evidence and electrical testing central; the 2013–2019 Clio warrants suspension, touchscreen, window and gearbox checks; and the Modus demands vehicle-specific recall verification. Buy the individual car with the strongest records and inspection result, not simply the newest model year or lowest asking price.
