Some older Teslas have documented age-related problems, but the available evidence does not show that Teslas generally “fall apart” as they age. One clearly documented example affects the 8GB eMMC memory in the media control unit of some pre-March 2018 Model S and Model X vehicles. Whether a particular car is covered depends on its build, fault diagnosis, delivery date, mileage and warranty terms.
What age-related problem has Tesla documented?
8GB eMMC wear in some older Model S and Model X vehicles
In a notice dated November 9, 2020, Tesla described possible accumulated wear of the 8GB embedded MultiMediaCard (eMMC) in the media control unit of some Model S and Model X vehicles built before March 2018. Tesla said the condition could cause the center display to go blank or intermittently blank, or prompt a memory-degradation alert. The notice said the eMMC condition did not affect basic vehicle controllability.
Tesla’s adjustment program applied to diagnosis-confirmed failures within eight years from first delivery or 100,000 miles, whichever came first, subject to the original warranty terms. That was a limited, component-specific program—not blanket coverage for all older Teslas or every touchscreen problem. A vehicle outside those terms should not be assumed to qualify.
Does that mean old Teslas generally have poor reliability?
No. A documented issue in a defined group of vehicles is evidence of that issue, not proof of a fleet-wide aging pattern. The available material does not establish a representative Tesla failure rate by model year or mileage, a comparable dataset of repair costs, or a reliability ranking against similar vehicles.

Long-term-owner discussions can describe individual experiences and raise useful questions, but posts are not a representative survey. They cannot show how often a repair occurs across the Tesla fleet or what a typical owner will pay.
What should you check before paying for a repair?
- Check the VIN for open recalls. Use Tesla’s recall information service or contact Tesla with the vehicle identification number. Tesla Support says service for a vehicle included in a recall is free regardless of age or mileage. Recall eligibility is separate from the eMMC adjustment program.
- Confirm the vehicle’s own warranty terms. Battery and drive-unit coverage varies by model, trim, market and vehicle date. Tesla’s current warranty overview is not a substitute for the warranty issued with an older, specific vehicle; use that vehicle’s original terms and confirm any remaining coverage with Tesla.
- Get the fault diagnosed. A blank or intermittently blank display is among the symptoms Tesla associated with eMMC wear, but a symptom alone does not establish that the eMMC has failed or that a vehicle qualifies for the adjustment program.
- Ask for a written estimate before authorizing paid work. Check that the estimate identifies the diagnosed fault and proposed repair. The appropriate repair provider depends on the vehicle and fault; there is no supported universal price or provider ranking for this issue.
What about battery aging?
Battery performance and safety can change with age. A 2023 Department of Energy presentation by Tanvir Tanim, R&D Scientist and Group Lead in the Energy Storage Technology Group, states that “Battery performance and safety evolve with aging.” That is a general point about EV batteries, not evidence of Tesla-specific failure rates or a forecast for any particular Tesla battery pack.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell an owner
- Established: Tesla documented a specific eMMC wear condition affecting some pre-March 2018 Model S and Model X vehicles, with defined symptoms and a time- and mileage-limited adjustment program.
- Useful next step: Check VIN-specific recall status and the vehicle’s own warranty before arranging paid service.
- Not established: How frequently aging Teslas fail overall, which model years have the highest total repair burden, or how Tesla compares with equivalent cars.
