Among the notable production outboards documented here, Seven Marine’s 627-hp model has the highest announced rating, followed by Mercury’s 600-hp V12 Verado. This is a selection of high-output engines, not a definitive all-time ranking: it draws on manufacturer and company announcements, not a complete historical census or independent, apples-to-apples testing. Horsepower figures below are manufacturer-announced ratings.

The list spans two manufacturers’ current or recent product information and several entries from Seven Marine’s historical portfolio. It does not cover every production engine, racing motor, prototype, or custom build ever made. Confirm a model’s present-day availability and support with its manufacturer or a dealer rather than assuming a past announcement reflects current stock.
How each engine reached its rating
Seven Marine 627: 627 hp
Seven Marine announced the 627 in 2015 as a non-racing production outboard and said it joined the company’s 557-hp model. President Rick Davis described the challenge as “Creating a non-racing outboard at 627hp on standard fuel is no easy task”. In 2018, Seven Marine listed a redesigned 627 in a portfolio built around its 6.2 L supercharged V8 platform, with closed cooling, fuel injection, and a wet-disc clutch transmission. The company also offered a twin-prop, contra-rotating gearcase as an option. These are dated manufacturer descriptions, not evidence of current parts or service availability. Mercury Verado V12 600: 600 hp
Mercury introduced the 7.6 L V12 Verado on February 11, 2021, calling it the world’s first V12 outboard. Its naturally aspirated, large-displacement quad-cam powerhead sends power through an automatic two-speed transmission. The gearcase steers independently while the powerhead remains fixed, a layout Mercury says helps package multiple engines on a transom. Mercury also presents the transmission and large-displacement design as useful for heavy-boat acceleration and cruising; those are manufacturer-described benefits, not independent comparative findings. The company’s current U.S. product page calls the 600 its most powerful outboard. Mercury’s launch announcement; Mercury’s U.S. V12 600 product page.

#1 Best Overall
- 【Powerful Power】The four-stroke 6.5-horsepower engine, with a load capacity of 661-1653 pounds, provides powerful power and ensures a smooth ride. The three-blade propeller reduces drag and balances thrust for optimal performance. A water-cooling system prevents engine overheating, enhancing stability and reliability.
- 【Flexible Use】This compact and lightweight outboard motor is easy to carry and move. Steering and tilting can be manually controlled using the handle. A reverse gear function is also provided for convenient steering. The switch cannot be pulled while the machine is in forward or reverse, preventing danger and damage to the machine.
- 【Sturdy and Durable】The mounting clip securely attaches the outboard motor to a transom up to 1.57 inches (41 cm) thick. High-quality plastic and aluminum alloy are extremely durable, wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant, and rust-resistant, ensuring a long lifespan. A water deflector above the propeller effectively reduces wave roll and prevents water from getting wet.
- 【Thoughtful Design】The 3.2-gallon (1.9-liter) fuel tank reduces frequent refueling. The fuel tank features a carry handle for easy transport and portability. Simply turning the throttle lever allows for a continuously variable speed change from 5000-6000 rpm, reaching speeds of 6.2-12.42 mph (approximately 10-20 km/h), allowing you to experience a thrilling sea cruise.
- 【Wide Applications】This 6.5 hp outboard motor is suitable for small boats (such as inflatable boats, iron boats, plastic boats, fiberglass boats, and wooden boats) and is suitable for water operations in rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and fish ponds. Furthermore, its advanced CDI ignition system results in fuel consumption of only 0.52 gallons (approximately 1.7 liters) per hour, making it economical.
That product page also reports Mercury-run comparisons on a 43-foot, 22,000-pound day boat. Mercury says two V12 600s delivered 20% better fuel economy at identical cruise speed than three competitor 425-hp engines, and 24% better fuel economy at top speed. It also reports 15% faster cruise speed at best cruise miles per gallon and 30% lower noise than a competitor 425 in its testing. These are Mercury’s results for the stated boat and configurations; they should not be generalized to other hulls, loads, installations, or competing setups.
Seven Marine 577: 577 hp
The 577 appeared in Seven Marine’s 2018 lineup alongside the redesigned 627 and the 527. Seven described all three as using its 6.2 L supercharged V8 platform, closed cooling, fuel injection, and a wet-disc clutch transmission, with a twin-prop contra-rotating gearcase available as an option. The announcement establishes the model’s place in that historical portfolio, not current production or service status. Seven Marine’s 2018 portfolio announcement.

The water cooling system is designed to maintain the optimal temperature, coupled with overheating protection, allowing you to continuously enjoy the fun of the navigation.
- 【Easy to Operate】: The throttle lever directly controls acceleration and steering. The step-less speed regulation allow you to easily adjust the running speed, combined with simple gear shifting (forward, neutral, or reverse), bringing you a more comfortable and convenient user experience.
Seven Marine 557: 557 hp
Seven Marine named the 557 as an existing model when it announced the 627 in 2015. In its 2018 portfolio announcement, the company said the 557 was being phased out in favor of the 527 and 577. The cited announcements do not establish the 557’s displacement, nor do they show current parts, service, or resale support. Seven Marine 527: 527 hp
Seven Marine included the 527 in its 2018 portfolio as the lower-rated member of a 6.2 L supercharged V8 family that also included the 577 and redesigned 627. The company described closed cooling, a wet-disc clutch transmission, fuel injection, and an optional twin-prop contra-rotating gearcase for the lineup. Those details come from the dated announcement, which does not establish present-day availability. Seven Marine’s 2018 portfolio announcement.

High-output outboards did not begin with engines rated above 400 hp. Yamaha’s corporate history says its 200A and 220A models, released in 1982, exceeded 200 hp. That milestone gives context for the growth in headline ratings, but it does not establish a complete historical ranking or a like-for-like performance comparison with modern engines.
