Not uniformly. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) is the clearest production-EV example of a cathode chemistry with better thermal-runaway behavior than nickel-rich nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC), especially NMC-811, in comparative abuse testing. A 2024 automotive study measured a nine-times-faster cell reaction and five-times-faster module propagation for NMC-811, with a peak module temperature of 899 °C versus 524 °C for LFP.
Those results show a meaningful chemistry advantage, not a guarantee that an LFP vehicle cannot burn. Cell spacing, barriers, cooling, venting, state of charge, cell format and electronic controls determine whether a local failure remains local or spreads through a pack. Sodium-ion and solid-state designs may improve safety, but the evidence is not yet strong enough to call either a universally proven safer replacement for today’s lithium-ion packs.

What thermal runaway is—and what the cathode changes
Thermal runaway is a self-heating failure in which a cell generates heat faster than it can remove it. Temperature rises, internal reactions accelerate, the separator can fail, and the cell may vent flammable gases, ignite or eject hot material. Heat from one cell can then trigger adjacent cells, a process called thermal propagation.
The cathode is only one part of that chain. Its crystal structure and chemical composition influence how much heat and oxygen-containing gas can be released as the cell is heated. A more stable cathode can delay reactions or reduce their intensity, but it cannot compensate for a crushed cell, a short circuit, inadequate cooling or a pack with no effective barriers.

That is why “safer chemistry” should be read as “more favorable behavior under specified abuse conditions,” not “immune to runaway.” A cell-level result also cannot be converted directly into a vehicle fire rate.
What the strongest LFP-versus-NMC evidence shows
The most directly relevant comparison in the supplied evidence is a 2024 automotive study by Jan Schöberl, Manuel Ank, Markus Schreiber, Nikolaos Wassiliadis and Markus Lienkamp. It compared LFP with nickel-rich NMC-811 cells and modules under the study’s own initiation and test conditions.

The authors summarized the module finding as: “Thermal propagation is five times faster in the NMC-811 module.” The practical implication is that LFP can provide more time for detection, cooling and emergency response after a cell failure, while NMC-811 can place greater demands on thermal barriers and heat removal.

Cell format, capacity, state of charge, trigger method, surrounding materials and measurement location all affect a reported peak. An 899 °C value from this module test is meaningful against the 524 °C value generated in the same study, but it is not a universal temperature rating for every NMC or LFP battery.
Why LFP is generally more thermally stable
Iron-phosphate chemistry
LFP uses an iron-phosphate cathode rather than the nickel-rich layered oxide used in NMC-811. In comparative abuse work, the phosphate structure is less prone to the rapid, highly exothermic reactions associated with nickel-rich oxides. That helps explain the slower reaction and lower module peak reported in the 2024 study.

A safety benefit with a packaging cost
The trade-off is energy density. The International Energy Agency’s 2026 figures put the upper end of latest LFP cells at about 205 Wh/kg, compared with about 265 Wh/kg for NMC. For the same stored energy, an LFP cell set can therefore require more mass or volume. Cell-to-pack integration, structural packaging and efficient cooling can narrow the practical difference, so cell-level watt-hours per kilogram do not predict the exact mass or range of a finished vehicle.
Production maturity
LFP is not merely a laboratory concept. The International Renewable Energy Agency, citing BloombergNEF data, reported that LFP represented about 44% of the passenger-vehicle battery market in 2023. That share indicates substantial production experience, but it does not mean every LFP pack uses the same safeguards or has identical crash and abuse performance.
Why cathode chemistry cannot determine pack safety alone
Cell spacing and barriers
Physical separation can slow heat transfer from a failing cell to its neighbors. Ceramic or other insulating barriers, fire-resistant intermediate materials and deliberate vent paths can keep hot gases away from adjacent cells. A tightly packed design may save space while leaving less time for those protections to work.
Cooling and heat rejection
Liquid or air cooling removes heat during normal driving and charging. Its layout also affects an accident: a cooling plate or channel can either draw heat away or provide a path that conducts it toward nearby cells. Engineers must account for normal temperature uniformity and for one-cell failure.
State of charge
A highly charged cell generally has more chemical energy available when it fails than a partially charged cell. The same chemistry can therefore produce different gas, heat and propagation behavior at different states of charge. Test results are useful only when the tested charge level is known.

Cell format and module construction
Pouch, prismatic and cylindrical cells have different surface areas, vent locations and mechanical constraints. Module geometry changes how gases escape and how heat reaches neighboring cells. Results from a small cylindrical cell cannot be assumed to describe a large prismatic module without additional testing.

Detection and controls
Battery-management systems monitor voltage, current and temperature, and can isolate a fault or stop charging. Sensors cannot prevent every mechanically induced short circuit, but earlier detection can reduce the energy delivered to a damaged area. Fuses, contactors and software limits are therefore part of the safety case, even though they are not cathode properties.
Venting and the surrounding environment
Runaway cells may vent hot, flammable and toxic gases. A pack designed to direct those gases away from passengers and neighboring modules can have a different outcome from one that allows gases to accumulate. Fire behavior also depends on enclosure materials and the vehicle environment, not only on the cell’s cathode.
Why a single-cell fire test is not enough
An ACS Energy Letters study in 2024 found that fire and smoke do not always increase linearly as the number of cells rises from a cell to a module or battery. Its authors concluded that “testing in the relevant configuration and environment is imperative.” In other words, adding ten cell-level results does not reliably predict what ten cells will do when they share a module enclosure, cooling system and vent path.
For a meaningful safety claim, look for testing at the scale that matters: a complete module or pack, the intended cell format, a stated state of charge and a clearly described initiation method. A result that says only “the cell did not catch fire” may omit propagation, gas toxicity, re-ignition or damage to neighboring cells.

Are sodium-ion batteries safer?
Sodium-ion cells are a developing alternative that replaces lithium with sodium in the charge-carrying system. A 2025 review that included sodium-ion cells summarized the tested safety ordering as LFP > sodium-ion >> NMC. That ordering is useful as a description of the reviewed chemistries and abuse protocols, not as a guarantee for every sodium-ion product.
Sodium-ion safety depends on the complete electrode and electrolyte formulation, cell design, charge level and trigger used in the experiment. Some sodium-ion cells may perform favorably in one abuse test while showing different gas or propagation behavior in another. Production-vehicle evidence is also less extensive than the accumulated record for LFP and NMC.
Is a solid-state EV battery safer?
Solid-state designs replace the liquid electrolyte in some or all of the cell with a solid material. Removing a flammable liquid can reduce one potential fuel source and may allow different separator and packaging designs. That is a credible safety pathway, but it is not yet a blanket production-EV conclusion.
The IEA states that many solid-state safety advantages have been demonstrated mainly in prototype or “almost-solid-state” systems. Interfaces, manufacturing defects, mechanical damage and any remaining liquid or gel components can still create hazards. Until full-scale production packs are tested under comparable abuse conditions, “solid-state” should be treated as a promising design direction rather than proof that a particular car is safer.
How to evaluate an automaker’s battery-safety claim
- Identify the exact chemistry. “Lithium-ion” is a family label. Ask whether the cathode is LFP, NMC, another formulation or a blend.
- Find the test scale. Distinguish a single-cell test from a module, pack or complete-vehicle test.
- Check the initiation method. Nail penetration, external heating, overcharge and crush tests stress different failure mechanisms.
- Check state of charge and cell format. A result at a partial charge in a small cell may not represent a fully charged vehicle pack.
- Look beyond ignition. Ask about propagation time, peak temperature, gas release, smoke, vent direction and re-ignition.
- Separate safety from range. Higher energy density can reduce pack mass, but it may require more sophisticated barriers and cooling. Lower energy density does not eliminate the need for those systems.
- Look for regulatory or independent testing. A marketing statement without a named standard, configuration and measured outcome is difficult to compare with another claim.
What this means for someone choosing or owning an EV
If minimizing propagation severity is your priority
An LFP-equipped vehicle is the clearest current production option supported by comparative evidence for slower and less severe thermal propagation than nickel-rich NMC-811. Confirm the specific model’s pack design, because two vehicles using LFP can still differ in barriers, cooling and monitoring.

If range and low mass are the priority
NMC can offer higher cell-level energy density, which may help a manufacturer achieve a lighter or more compact pack. That advantage does not make every NMC pack unsafe; it means the design has to manage a chemistry that, in the cited comparison, reacted faster and reached a higher peak temperature.
After crash or flood damage
Cathode chemistry does not change the need for professional assessment after severe impact, water intrusion or visible battery damage. A delayed internal short can develop after the vehicle appears normal. Follow the vehicle maker’s emergency instructions and have a qualified high-voltage technician inspect the pack rather than attempting to open it.
The bottom line
Newer EV cathodes are not automatically safer. Current comparative evidence gives LFP a real thermal-stability advantage over nickel-rich NMC-811: slower cell reaction, slower module propagation and a lower peak temperature in the reported automotive tests. That advantage is offset by lower gravimetric energy density and does not eliminate fire or gas hazards.

Sodium-ion may prove competitive, and solid-state may eventually reduce some hazards, but neither should yet be treated as a universally demonstrated safer production-EV solution.
