But the available evidence does not show that cars as a class are becoming obsolete faster or have shorter useful lives than earlier generations. Whether a particular car remains practical depends on its reliability, repairability, parts and software support, and the cost of keeping it on the road.
What does “car obsolescence” mean?
Obsolescence is not a single event. A car may become obsolete in one sense while remaining usable in another. Distinguishing the causes helps answer whether a vehicle is genuinely nearing the end of its useful life or simply becoming less convenient or desirable.
- Mechanical obsolescence: major failures, corrosion or wear make continued use impractical.
- Economic obsolescence: a repair costs more than the owner considers worthwhile compared with the car’s value or replacement options.
- Repair-access obsolescence: parts, diagnostic information, tools or trained technicians are difficult to obtain.
- Software obsolescence: updates or connected services end, or software-dependent features lose support.
- Market obsolescence: a car still works but is less attractive because newer vehicles offer different safety, efficiency or convenience features.
These risks can overlap, but none alone proves that modern vehicles have shorter service lives overall.
Are modern cars becoming obsolete faster?
There is no robust, comparable fleet-wide statistic in the available evidence showing that modern cars as a class have shorter useful lives than earlier generations. The stronger conclusion is narrower: newer vehicle architectures create additional ways a car’s usability or repairability can be constrained, while the actual outcome varies by model, manufacturer, market and owner.

Software-defined and connected architectures are a real industry shift. SAE International’s 2024 engineering reports describe automakers’ move toward software-centric vehicles and the challenges involved in executing it (SAE: The Software-defined Vehicle and Its Engineering Evolution; SAE: The Software-defined Vehicle—Current Trajectory and Execution Challenges). That shift can make software support more consequential, but it does not mean every car becomes unusable when a newer model or software release appears.
Hyundai Motor Group’s 2022 announcement described plans and ambitions for software-defined vehicles and connected-car services, including a 2025 target. That is a historical company projection, not independent confirmation that the target was achieved (Hyundai Motor Group announcement).
Will software updates stop working on your car?
There is no universal support period for vehicle software in the evidence available here. Update availability and the support window are manufacturer- and model-specific. Before buying or keeping a software-dependent vehicle, check what the manufacturer commits to for security updates, navigation and connected services, and what happens when a subscription or service ends.

They can be. Modern vehicles may require more specialized knowledge, equipment and diagnostic access than a simpler repair would. In its March 2024 report on U.S. vehicle repair competition and consumer choice, the Government Accountability Office wrote: “Advanced vehicle technologies, such as electric vehicles, may make repairs more expensive and complex because they require additional knowledge, equipment, and other investments.” (GAO-24-106633).
That does not mean independent repair is impossible or that every repair is restricted to a dealer. Practical access depends on the repair, vehicle, market and availability of parts, information, tools and training. GAO interviewed more than 50 stakeholders; that was a qualitative, nongeneralizable review, not a statistically representative survey of all repair businesses or vehicle owners.

GAO also distinguished present conditions from possible future concerns: interviewed industry and independent-repair stakeholders agreed that telematics data were not then necessary to conduct repairs, although stakeholders said wireless telematics could give dealers a competitive advantage in some repairs. That qualification matters; a potential barrier should not be described as a proven universal obstacle today.
What to check before relying on an independent shop
- Whether the shop has the diagnostic equipment and repair information for your vehicle and the specific fault.
- Whether required parts are available through the shop’s supply channels.
- Whether the job involves high-voltage components or other work requiring specialized training.
- Whether the manufacturer’s warranty or local rules affect who can perform the repair.
In the United States, the EPA’s “Freedom to Fix” page describes agency guidance on access to repair tools and diagnostic information; it is not an international rule (U.S. EPA: Freedom to Fix). In the European Union, Directive 2024/1799 sets repair-related rules for goods within its scope. Do not assume every provision applies to every car without checking the relevant product laws and national implementation (EU Directive 2024/1799).

Can an EV battery be repaired rather than replaced?
Sometimes, but repairability differs by battery pack and manufacturer policy. Volkswagen Group France said in 2024 that its battery is removable and individual components can be replaced. The company reported about 50 battery repair centres open in France at the time and planned 150; it also described 50 hours of supplemental technician training for the battery operations discussed. These are France-specific company statements and plans, not a count of centres operating elsewhere or proof that every pack can be repaired in the same way (Volkswagen Group France battery repair information).
Repairability does not make high-voltage battery work suitable for an untrained owner. Such work requires appropriate equipment, training and safe procedures. A pack’s design and the availability of qualified service determine whether a component-level repair is practical.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do rising EV sales mean cars will become obsolete more quickly?
Market growth does not establish shorter vehicle life. Gartner’s 2024 release forecast 18.4 million EV shipments in 2024 and 20.6 million in 2025; these were forecasts, not reported final shipment totals. It also forecast that the average cost of repairing serious EV body-and-battery accident damage would rise by 30% by 2027. That is a forecast about a specific repair-cost category, not evidence that all EV repairs will cost 30% more or that vehicles will be retired sooner (Gartner forecast).

How to judge a car’s long-term support and repair risk
When comparing vehicles—or deciding whether to repair one—look beyond the purchase price and headline range. The following checks address the practical sources of obsolescence risk:
- Software: ask what updates and connected services are supported, for how long, and whether key functions require a subscription or network connection.
- Repair information and tools: confirm what independent shops in your area can access for the model and repair you need.
- Parts and service network: check parts availability and whether qualified repairers are accessible where you live.
- Battery policy: for an EV, ask whether the manufacturer or service network supports component-level battery repair or only larger assembly replacement.
- Warranty terms: compare the coverage, duration and thresholds that apply to the specific vehicle and market; do not treat one manufacturer’s engineering target as warranty coverage.
- Repair safety: identify whether the work involves high-voltage systems and ensure it is handled by appropriately trained technicians.
- Total repair economics: weigh the likely repair cost against the vehicle’s condition, value and your alternatives, rather than assuming a complex repair automatically makes a car disposable.
A basic OBD-II code reader can help some owners read supported fault codes before speaking with a repair shop, but it is not a universal diagnostic tool and cannot replace manufacturer-restricted data or diagnose every system. Check compatibility, supported modules and model-year coverage. It is not an EV battery repair tool.
What the evidence supports
Modern cars have new obsolescence pressures: software support can matter more, electronics can make some repairs more complex, and repair access varies with information, tools, parts and training. But those pressures do not establish a universal acceleration in vehicle obsolescence. Vehicle longevity still depends on the individual car’s design and condition, the support available for it, how it is used, and whether repairs remain practical and economical.
