Modular seating, removable beds, interior cargo channels, and compatible exterior racks can make those needs fit together—but the right layout depends on your van, equipment, and how you use the living area.
What “modular” means in a ski or surf camper van
In a modular conversion, seats, beds, storage, and gear-carrying space can be rearranged or added in different configurations. The aim is to use the same van for driving, sleeping, and hauling equipment without assuming that every configuration works at once.
For example, Wavecamper describes independent rail-mounted seats and multiple interior layouts, while Redfish Vanz presents its Tackle Box as a modular gear-hauler that can be configured with seating, sleeping, storage, electrical equipment, heating, and exterior gear options. Those are descriptions of specific vendor offerings, not independent assessments of their performance.
Choose where the equipment will ride
Inside the van
Interior loading protects gear from the elements and avoids an external rack, but it uses space that might otherwise serve as a bed, walkway, or changing area. Good Life Vans describes an aisle-loading length of about 245 cm in a short-wheelbase conversion and 285 cm in a long-wheelbase conversion, plus under-bed storage measuring 200 × 55 × 56 cm. These are vendor figures for the described build; the page also says the first module shown in its video is no longer available, so confirm the current design before relying on those dimensions.

Good Life Vans says, “Long items like skis, ski poles, or snowboards easily fit in the Good Life conversion.” That is the company’s description, not an independent test. Measure your own equipment and the complete route into the van—including any obstruction at the rear doors, bench, or bed platform—rather than comparing gear length with a headline cargo measurement alone.
On an exterior rack
A rear-mounted rack can leave the interior free for people and luggage, but exposed equipment can be wet or dirty, and loading access may be less convenient. PUSH components describes modular ski and snowboard mounts attached to airline/L-track or compatible rail systems. Confirm the exact vehicle and rail fitment, the rack’s load limits, and how the equipment is secured before choosing a mount.

Through a bench or partition opening
A through-loading opening can make long items easier to carry inside without requiring the entire living area to become a cargo bay. Reimo’s 2023 catalog describes a removable bench front that allows surfboards or skis up to 2.4 m to pass through. Treat this as a catalog example: check that the part fits your van and conversion and is currently available.
Compare the compromises before choosing a layout
| Approach | What it helps with | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Interior aisle or under-bed storage | Keeps gear inside and can combine cargo with sleeping or seating. | Actual unobstructed loading length; whether the bed can be deployed while gear remains stowed; access to seats and doors; room to change out of wet clothing. |
| Rear-mounted exterior rack | Leaves more interior volume available for living and luggage. | Vehicle and rail compatibility; rack capacity; securement; gear access; exposure to wet, dirty, or icy conditions. |
| Through-loading opening | Provides a route for long equipment through a bench or partition. | Opening dimensions, fitment, current part availability, and whether the opening remains usable in the sleeping configuration. |
Check the dimensions of your longest equipment against the full loading path, not just the nominal length of the van. Then test the layout you expect to use: gear in place, bed deployed, doors accessible, and enough clear space to change. If the van only works when one of those tasks is postponed, decide whether that is acceptable for your trip.

Verify the winter setup, not just the equipment list
Heating and insulation are build components to evaluate, not guarantees that a van will be comfortable or safe in every winter condition. Good Life Vans lists auxiliary heating and insulation as options. Redfish Vanz lists a winter insulation package and a Webasto Air Top 2000 heater among options for its described base model. The reviewed product pages do not establish independently tested performance at a specified temperature.
- Ask what areas are insulated and what the insulation specification actually describes. Reimo’s 2023 catalog lists 15 mm insulation material; that is a product specification, not proof of the thermal performance of a completed van.
- Confirm the heater type, fuel or electrical needs, and how the system is operated in the configuration you are considering.
- Check ventilation and whether water systems are protected for the conditions you expect to encounter.
- Ask the builder for details specific to the vehicle and conversion rather than treating a listed heater or insulation package as a cold-weather rating.

Its published loading and under-bed dimensions are useful starting points, but the company notes that the first module shown in its video is no longer available. PUSH components and Reimo
PUSH components’ modular rear mounts are an example of an exterior approach for compatible airline/L-track or other supported rails. Reimo’s removable bench front is an example of a through-loading approach, with its 2023 catalog stating a maximum passage length of 2.4 m for boards or skis. Neither example removes the need to verify fitment, current availability, and the dimensions of your own vehicle.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Equipment: Measure the longest ski, board, poles, and bags you plan to carry.
- Load path: Check the narrowest opening and every obstruction between the exterior and the intended storage position.
- Living layout: Determine whether passengers can ride, the bed can be made, and doors can be used with gear aboard.
- Wet gear: Decide where damp clothing and equipment will go without blocking the walkway or sleeping area.
- Winter systems: Request details about insulation coverage, heating, energy or fuel requirements, ventilation, and water-system protection.
- Fit and security: Confirm van model, wheelbase, rail or rack compatibility, rated capacity, and the equipment’s securement method.
- Build status: Distinguish current configurable products from older demonstration modules and catalog examples.
