Generally, but the evidence is mixed—and it does not predict how every Kia will hold up. Consumer Reports ranks Kia 10th for new-car reliability and 21st for used-car reliability in its 2026 brand rankings. Those are separate brand-level indicators, not guarantees about a particular model, model year, or used vehicle. Before buying or diagnosing a Kia, check the exact car’s history, warranty eligibility, and open recalls by VIN.
What the 2026 reliability rankings say—and what they do not
Consumer Reports’ 2026 brand rankings place Kia 10th for new-car reliability and 21st for used-car reliability. The rankings are distinct: a new-car result should not be treated as a score for older Kias, or vice versa. Consumer Reports also separates reliability from owner satisfaction and maintenance and repair costs on its Kia brand page.
A brand ranking is a useful starting point, not a forecast for an individual car. It cannot tell you whether a specific Kia’s engine, hybrid system, transmission, electronics, or other components have been maintained well or are trouble-free. The evidence available here does not establish comparable reliability results for every 2026 Kia model or a Kia-specific failure rate.
How to read dependability-study numbers
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. It tracks reported problems across nine categories, including infotainment, powertrain, and features and controls. That defined group and ownership period make the study useful context, but not a prediction for all Kia model years or a particular used car.

The study’s 204 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) is the industry average, not Kia’s score. Infotainment was the most problematic category overall at 56.7 PP100; those figures likewise are not Kia-specific. J.D. Power’s release does not provide a Kia-specific brand score in the material cited here. Its director of auto benchmarking, Jason Norton, said: “Software updates and new technologies should enhance the ownership experience over time, yet many vehicle owners cite ongoing mobile phone integration problems and little to no benefit after an update is performed.” See the 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study for its scope and findings.
Reliability, warranty, recalls, and safety are different questions
Warranty coverage
Kia America lists a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile basic limited warranty for the U.S. market. Kia describes the powertrain term as applying to the original purchaser and a Certified Pre-Owned Kia purchaser. Do not assume the advertised term transfers unchanged to every later owner: ask Kia or a dealer to verify the specific VIN’s warranty start date, purchaser eligibility, covered components, and remaining coverage. Recalls
Check the vehicle identification number in the NHTSA recall lookup for unrepaired recalls, then confirm that any required remedy was completed. NHTSA says a recall does not expire. A model-wide headline cannot establish whether an individual car’s recall work is outstanding.
Crash safety
NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings assess crash-test performance and rollover resistance. They are not reliability ratings and do not measure long-term repair frequency or dependability. How to assess a specific Kia before buying
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record its model, model year, engine or electrified powertrain, trim, mileage, and service history. A broad brand ranking cannot account for those differences.
- Check the VIN for open recalls. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup and verify that any remedy has been completed.
- Verify warranty terms for that VIN. Ask Kia or a dealer to confirm the start date, eligibility, covered parts, and remaining coverage rather than relying on the headline duration alone.
- Review its maintenance and repair records. Look for gaps and recurring repairs, and compare model-specific reliability information when available.
- Arrange an independent inspection. A qualified mechanic can assess the car’s present condition; a brand ranking cannot diagnose it. An OBD-II scanner or diagnostic code reader can help surface stored fault codes, but it cannot prove reliability, find every fault, or replace an inspection.
What owners should do when a Kia has a problem
Start with the symptom, the vehicle’s maintenance and repair history, and a VIN recall check. If a warning light or drivability issue appears, have the fault diagnosed rather than treating a brand ranking—or a clean recall lookup—as proof that the vehicle is sound. For safety-related concerns, NHTSA complaint and investigation resources can provide context, but complaint counts alone do not establish a vehicle’s failure rate. NHTSA says it evaluates complaints alongside other data and does not require a fixed complaint count to open an investigation; see its safety problem reporting information.

Assess crash-safety ratings separately from reliability. The available 2026 rankings and study figures do not establish that every Kia model or year performs alike.
