- Set a purchase budget. Treat launch MSRPs as historical model-year context, not as a dealer quote or current offer. Compare the sticker price, destination and fees for the specific trim.
- Choose the drivetrain you need. Verify whether the vehicle is gasoline-only, hybrid or plug-in, and whether AWD is standard, optional or unavailable on your chosen gas trim.
- Compare fuel economy for the exact configuration. EPA estimates can vary with engine, drivetrain and trim; avoid comparing one model’s best-rated configuration with another’s different setup.
- Check space and capability against your use. Confirm passenger and cargo measurements from the manufacturer, and match any towing requirement to the vehicle’s rating, installed equipment and trailer setup.
- Compare equipment, not just nameplates. Safety features, headlights and other equipment can vary by trim, which can affect both the buying decision and award applicability.
How to interpret the 2025 IIHS awards
IIHS changed its 2025 award criteria to put greater emphasis on protection for rear-seat passengers. Its updated moderate-overlap front test adds a second-row dummy; the 40 mph test simulates a head-on collision with 40% of the vehicle’s front width overlapping. For Top Safety Pick, a vehicle needs an acceptable rating in that updated test; Top Safety Pick+ requires a good rating. Both awards also require good ratings in small-overlap front and updated side tests, acceptable or good headlights standard across trims, and acceptable or good pedestrian front-crash prevention.

As of March 13, 2025, IIHS reported that 48 models had qualified for 2025 awards, compared with 71 at the same point in 2024. The agency said around 60% of 2025 models tested had earned acceptable or good ratings in the updated moderate-overlap test. These are award and test-context figures, not a ranking of the ten vehicles here against all cars on the road.
Before relying on an accolade, check the award year and the IIHS page for build-date restrictions, trim, body style and powertrain. For example, the listed 2025 Forester award excludes Wilderness. A model-line award should not automatically be attributed to every vehicle sold under that name.
