No. The available evidence does not show that Jeep is the only American car Japanese people like. It does show that Jeep is Japan’s top-selling American brand, and that the Wrangler appears in official rankings of imported models. Sales and registrations establish market presence—not affection or preference.
What the evidence says about Jeep in Japan
The Japan Automobile Importers Association (JAIA) ranks imported models by registrations. Its calendar-year tables include the Jeep Wrangler among the top 20 non-Japanese imported models in 2025 and in other years. That recurring appearance is evidence that the Wrangler has a meaningful foothold in the imported market; it is not a survey of how much people like it, nor a comparison of brand sentiment across American makes. The Associated Press reports that Jeep is the top-selling American brand in Japan. That is a relative sales position, not proof that Japanese buyers like Jeep while disliking every other American car. Sales can reflect availability, pricing, product fit, dealer coverage and other factors as well as consumer preference. Associated Press report
Why Jeep may fare better than other American brands
AP describes several practical challenges for other American cars in Japan: vehicle size can be awkward on narrow roads and in limited parking spaces; left-hand steering may be less convenient; fuel economy can be a concern; and after-sales service depends on the reach of the dealer network. AP also notes that buyers of higher-priced foreign cars often choose compact or medium-sized European vehicles. These are reported market considerations, not a proven explanation for every buyer’s decision or a single demonstrated cause of Jeep’s position.

Vehicle fit and steering
Size and steering configuration can affect whether a vehicle feels practical in daily use. They are useful comparison points, but the available evidence does not establish that every Jeep model is better suited to Japan than every competing American model.
Fuel economy and support
Fuel economy and access to service can also shape a purchase decision. AP identifies these as challenges for American brands, while Jeep’s historical Japan strategy included dealer-network development and service training. The sources do not quantify how much either factor contributes to Jeep’s sales lead today.

Jeep adapted some products and services to Japan
A 2017 Government of Japan feature described FCA Japan’s efforts to adapt the Renegade for the market, including offering right-hand steering, building a dealer network and training staff. It reported that newly registered Jeep vehicles rose 33.9% in 2016, with the Renegade driving growth. In that feature, Pontus Häggström, then FCA Japan’s president and CEO, described the company’s view of imported-car shoppers: “We’ve found that Japanese consumers, when it comes to selecting an imported car, are surprisingly familiar with the brand’s history and background, and they’re seeking unique characteristics that do not exist in domestic cars.” He also said, “Also, consumers in Japan put enormous attention on hardware (quality) and software (service).” These are an executive’s observations in a 2017 interview, not findings from an independent national survey.

Japan’s imported-car market is not just Jeep
The broader market gives useful context, but it should not be confused with Jeep’s sales. The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) reported 321,000 new imported vehicles sold in Japan in 2024, up 3.0% from 2023; 301,000 of those vehicles were passenger cars. A KPMG Japan survey of 6,007 Japanese vehicle owners aged 18–69, conducted in August 2025, offers insight into purchase considerations among current US-brand owners. Design and vehicle size ranked among their leading new-car considerations. That tells us what those respondents weigh when considering a vehicle; it does not establish that they favor Jeep over other American brands or measure affection for Jeep. A separate online survey summarized by OvO reported that 6% of 200 respondents said they were “very interested” in American cars. Its report does not establish a representative sample, and it does not compare Jeep with other American brands.
