The current Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) page rates qualifying 2025–27 Tesla Cybertrucks built after April 2025 Good in three crashworthiness categories: small overlap front, updated moderate overlap front, and updated side. That is encouraging evidence, but it does not mean every Cybertruck has the same results or that every measure earned Good. IIHS’s current page also conflicts with its September 2025 announcement over headlights and award eligibility, and the material available here does not establish a Cybertruck-specific National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) star rating.
What the IIHS crash tests show
IIHS assigns letter grades to individual tests and measures; its results are not a single percentage estimate of injury risk. Its current Cybertruck page bases the listed ratings on tests of a 2025 Cybertruck conducted by Tesla and rated by IIHS. The results apply to qualifying 2025–27 vehicles built after April 2025, not automatically to every truck carrying a 2025 model-year label. See the IIHS Cybertruck rating page.
| IIHS test or measure | Current result for qualifying builds | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Small overlap front, driver side | Good | IIHS lists a Good crashworthiness rating for the driver-side test. |
| Small overlap front, passenger side | Good | IIHS lists a Good crashworthiness rating for the passenger-side test. |
| Updated moderate overlap front | Good overall | The updated test places added emphasis on rear-seat protection. |
| Updated side | Good overall | The driver torso subcategory is Acceptable; the other listed driver and rear-passenger subcategories are Good. |
Small overlap front
The two small-overlap results are Good for qualifying builds. IIHS says the trucks built after April 2025 received changes to the front underbody structure and footwell to improve occupant safety in these front crashes. IIHS described the small-overlap results and the structural changes.
Updated moderate overlap front
IIHS gives the updated moderate-overlap test a Good overall rating for qualifying builds. The test described in IIHS’s September 16, 2025 announcement sends a vehicle into a stationary barrier at 40 mph, with 40% of the vehicle’s front overlapping the barrier. The updated procedure focuses on rear-seat protection, so the result adds evidence about the back-seat occupant position rather than simply repeating a front-seat assessment. Read IIHS’s announcement on the updated test.

Updated side
The overall side-test grade is Good, but the subcategory detail matters: the driver torso measure is Acceptable, while the other listed driver and rear-passenger subcategories are Good. An overall Good should not be read as every measured injury criterion receiving the top grade.
Why the build date matters
IIHS specifies that the relevant crashworthiness ratings apply to 2025–27 Cybertrucks built after April 2025. It links the qualifying front-crash results to changes in the front underbody structure and footwell introduced from that point. A model-year designation alone therefore does not confirm that an individual vehicle is covered by these results.

To check a truck’s manufacturing information, IIHS says the certification label is typically on the driver’s door or the adjacent B-pillar. Use the vehicle’s build information when checking whether the rating’s stated applicability covers it; if that information is unclear, do not assume the post-April 2025 results apply.
Other IIHS measures—and an unresolved headlight discrepancy
The current IIHS page lists Good for pedestrian front crash prevention and headlights, Marginal for seat-belt reminders, and Acceptable for LATCH ease of use. It currently displays Top Safety Pick+ for qualifying builds. The current IIHS rating page shows these measures and award status.

That current page differs from IIHS’s September 16, 2025 announcement, which said the Cybertruck’s headlights were Poor because of excessive low-beam glare and that the result removed the truck from award consideration at that time. The available IIHS material does not explain whether the present page reflects a later test, a correction, or a change in criteria. The two records should be treated as a dated discrepancy, not merged into a claim that the headlight result or award status has always been the same. The September 2025 announcement records the earlier finding.

NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) evaluates frontal and side crash protection and rollover resistance, using controlled tests at contracted laboratories. Its scale runs from one to five stars, with five stars the highest rating. NHTSA describes the ratings program and its test selections.

No Cybertruck-specific NHTSA star score or test outcome is established here. An official 2024 Cybertruck side-test report appeared in search results, but its linked PDF could not be read; that is not enough evidence to report a rating or result. Do not substitute figures from secondary summaries or social posts for a readable official record. The surfaced NHTSA report is a PDF.
For comparisons using NHTSA scores, the agency says frontal crash ratings and Overall Vehicle Scores should be compared only among vehicles in the same class and within 250 pounds. Side-crash and rollover ratings can be compared across classes. NHTSA also notes that safety concerns are not included in the Overall Vehicle Score, so a high score does not rule out separate safety concerns. NHTSA’s comparison guidance explains these limits. Its NCAP overview describes the program’s scope.

Quick Recap
How to use these results when comparing vehicles
- Compare the same test type and rating program; an IIHS grade and an NHTSA star rating are not interchangeable.
- Match the vehicle’s build applicability and model year to the rating. For the IIHS results above, the stated coverage is 2025–27 builds after April 2025.
- Check which occupant position a test addresses. The updated IIHS moderate-overlap test emphasizes rear-seat protection, while the side result also reports separate driver and rear-passenger subcategories.
- Do not infer that a Good result in one test means the vehicle is safest overall, predicts performance in every real-world crash, or replaces checking recalls and other safety concerns.
