Indian motorcycles cannot be labeled reliably good or bad as a brand. The available evidence is model- and year-specific: official safety campaigns affect defined production groups, a UK inspection database reports a make-level pass rate rather than mechanical reliability, and a historical Consumer Reports survey does not publish an Indian-specific result. The most defensible buying decision comes from checking the exact motorcycle’s VIN, service records, warranty terms, model-year manual and access to an authorized dealer.
That approach matters for both new and used bikes. A recall may apply to one model year or a limited production population, while the condition and maintenance history of an individual motorcycle can matter more than its badge.

What “reliable” should mean for an Indian motorcycle
Reliability is often used to mean several different things. A motorcycle may start consistently, avoid major engine or transmission repairs, pass a roadworthiness inspection, or simply have parts and service available when needed. Those are related, but they are not the same measurement.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Mechanical durability: whether the engine, transmission, clutch, chassis and other major systems avoid failures over time.
- Electrical and control-system dependability: whether the battery, wiring, instruments, sensors and displays work as intended.
- Roadworthiness: whether the motorcycle meets a particular inspection standard at a particular test.
- Ownership support: whether recalls, warranty claims, parts and trained service are practical in your area.
No source reviewed supplies a current, brand-wide failure rate for Indian motorcycles. It is therefore misleading to convert a few recall notices, online anecdotes or an inspection statistic into a universal reliability score.

What the available evidence actually shows
Recalls are bounded safety campaigns, not a brand report card
Polaris’s Indian Motorcycle safety resources allow an owner to search campaigns by vehicle or VIN. The model and model year listed in a campaign define the population that needs investigation; the VIN determines whether a particular motorcycle is included and whether the remedy has been recorded as completed.
A recall demonstrates that a defined safety issue was identified and that a corrective action is required. It does not establish that every motorcycle in the brand, model line or production year has the problem, nor does it measure unrelated mechanical failures.
2025 fuel-pump wire campaign
One NHTSA-hosted notice concerns some 2025 Challenger, Pursuit, Roadmaster Elite and Springfield motorcycles. The notice says the supplier may have installed a fuel pump with an incorrectly crimped wire. Its exact language is: “Indian Motorcycle has decided that some Model Year 2025 Challenger, Pursuit, Roadmaster Elite, and Springfield motorcycles may have been built with a fuel pump with an incorrectly crimped wire by the supplier.”
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The wording is important. It identifies a possible manufacturing condition in a specified model-year population; it is not evidence that all 2025 examples or all Indian touring motorcycles will develop a fuel-system failure. A VIN search and confirmation that the remedy was completed are the useful actions for an owner.
2025 Scout display campaign
A separate NHTSA-hosted notice concerns some 2025 Scout and Scout Sixty motorcycles. Their rider display may falsely indicate an incorrect gear. That can affect the information presented to the rider even though it is a different issue from the fuel-pump wiring notice.
Because both campaigns are VIN- and population-specific, a buyer should not assume that a Scout is covered by the touring-model campaign, or that a touring model is covered by the Scout display campaign. Check each motorcycle independently.
What the Consumer Reports material does—and does not—say
Consumer Reports’ 2015 motorcycle reporting drew on responses from more than 11,000 subscribers and rated ten major brands. The material available for this question does not provide an Indian-specific estimate. It is also historical, so it should not be presented as a current reliability ranking for Indian motorcycles or as a substitute for a bike’s service history.

The 92.6% UK MOT figure
Bike Reliability reports a 92.6% first-time MOT pass rate for the Indian make over its stated 2005–2025 coverage. This is a UK roadworthiness-test outcome. A first-time pass means a motorcycle met the inspection requirements at that test; it does not reveal how many motorcycles had mechanical failures between tests, how much maintenance owners performed, or which models and years produced the result.

- Simple & Safe: Low maintenance, easy-to-use, universal battery charger is just 3.3 x 1.3 x 2.4 inches, 1 lb (charger only). Spark-proof circuitry ensures no-spark connections, and automatic reversed hook-up detection verifies correct connection
- Monitor Power Levels: Two-color charge status LED light indicates the state of the charge and if the battery voltage drops too far under load, adaptive charging will resume full charger output power. Automatic charge cycle functionality switches to float mode after fully charging the battery
The figure can be a useful broad signal that many tested motorcycles met the UK inspection standard, but it cannot prove that every Indian model or year has a 92.6% reliability rate.
Are there common Indian motorcycle problems?
The evidence does not establish one common-problem list for the entire Indian range. Two concrete issues are documented by official notices: the fuel-pump wire condition in the specified 2025 touring population and the possible incorrect-gear display on some 2025 Scouts and Scout Sixties.
Owner discussions frequently raise subjects such as batteries, gauges, electrical faults or dealer experiences. Those conversations can help a prospective owner decide what to inspect, but a post or thread cannot establish how often a fault occurs across all motorcycles. Treat such reports as questions for inspection rather than as proof of a brand-wide defect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to use owner reports responsibly
- Record the exact model, model year and mileage mentioned.
- Separate a confirmed recall or warranty repair from an owner’s suspicion about a fault.
- Look for repeated, independently documented patterns rather than counting comments in one thread.
- Ask whether the motorcycle was modified, neglected, stored improperly or repaired outside the authorized network.
- Verify any alleged defect against an official campaign, service bulletin or dealer diagnosis before treating it as a purchasing rule.
VIN and recall checks before you buy
A VIN check is the fastest way to turn a general reliability question into a motorcycle-specific answer. Perform it before signing a purchase agreement, even if the seller says the bike has never had a problem.
- Write down the complete VIN. Obtain it from the motorcycle itself, not only from an advertisement or photograph. Compare the frame VIN with the paperwork.
- Use the manufacturer’s Indian Motorcycle safety lookup. Search the VIN for open campaigns and read the listed model-year details.
- Check the NHTSA recall record. Confirm whether a campaign applies and whether the remedy is shown as completed.
- Ask for repair documentation. A completed campaign should have a dealer repair order or other record. If the seller cannot document completion, treat it as unresolved until a dealer confirms it.
- Contact an authorized dealer before purchase. Ask whether parts are available, whether the remedy is still outstanding and whether any warranty or service restrictions apply.
- Keep the result with the purchase records. Save the VIN response, invoices and correspondence so you can show what was checked and when.
An open safety campaign is not automatically a reason to reject a motorcycle. It is a reason to ensure the repair is available and completed, and to account for any waiting time before you rely on the bike.
Inspecting a used Indian motorcycle
Documentation and ownership history
- Request invoices, service-book entries and inspection records, not just a verbal maintenance summary.
- Match recorded mileage and dates for oil changes, brake work, tires, battery replacement and other scheduled tasks.
- Ask for documentation of warranty repairs, software or display work and recall completion.
- Check whether accessories or electrical modifications were installed and who performed the work.
- Confirm that the seller’s name and registration details are consistent with the title or equivalent ownership document.
Condition checks at the motorcycle
- Start the engine from cold if possible; a warm engine can hide starting or idle problems.
- Look for fuel, oil or coolant leaks and for damaged wiring, loose connectors or non-factory splices.
- Verify that the instrument display, warning lamps, indicators, brake lamps, horn and switches operate.
- Inspect tires for age, cracking, uneven wear and adequate tread, and check wheels for damage.
- Examine brake discs, pads, hoses and fluid condition; a professional should assess any doubt.
- Check steering-head, wheel and swingarm bearings for play, and inspect fork tubes for leaks or damage.
- During a legal test ride, confirm clutch engagement, gear selection, braking stability and absence of unusual vibration or noise.
A clean inspection does not guarantee future reliability, but missing records, neglected consumables or unexplained electrical work increase uncertainty and should affect the price or the decision to walk away.

What the 2025 Scout manual says
The 2025 Indian Scout owner manual describes a limited warranty lasting 24 months for privately used motorcycles and six months for commercially used motorcycles. It notes that duration may vary by jurisdiction. The warranty can transfer through an authorized Indian Motorcycle dealer during the existing term, but the transfer does not extend the original expiration date.
The manual also lists conditions and exclusions. Abuse, neglect or improper maintenance can exclude a repair when those actions directly caused the need for repair. The Scout terms should not be applied automatically to another Indian model, another market or another model year; read the warranty supplied for the exact motorcycle.

Follow the exact model-year service schedule
The owner manual is the authority for maintenance intervals, fluids, inspection procedures and storage guidance. A generic schedule found online may omit a requirement or apply to a different engine and platform. Have the seller identify the manual used for servicing and compare its schedule with the invoices.
Battery storage and charging
The 2025 Scout manual identifies an owner charger source through Indian Motorcycle or an authorized dealer. A compatible battery maintainer may be useful for some storage and riding patterns, but it is not a universal cure for starting problems and is not necessary for every owner. Confirm compatibility, connection instructions and storage precautions in the manual before attaching a charger.
Why dealer distance is a reliability factor
Warranty work, recall remedies, diagnostic equipment and model-specific software support may require an authorized dealer. Before buying, identify the nearest practical dealer, ask whether it services the model you want and learn how the shop handles appointments and parts ordering. A motorcycle that is mechanically sound can still be difficult to own if essential support is many hours away.
Comparing two Indian motorcycles without inventing a reliability ranking
There is no source-backed basis for ranking Indian models by long-term reliability. Use a comparison that reflects the individual motorcycles you can actually buy:
| Decision factor | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Model year and platform | Is the engine, electronics package and equipment the same as the version you researched? |
| VIN and recalls | Does the VIN show an open campaign, and is completed work documented? |
| Maintenance history | Are scheduled services supported by dated invoices or dealer records? |
| Current condition | Are starting, charging, controls, brakes, tires, suspension and drivetrain functioning normally? |
| Warranty | How much term remains, does it transfer, and what exclusions apply in your jurisdiction? |
| Service access | Can you reach an authorized dealer for recalls, diagnostics and warranty work? |
| Expected upkeep | Have you obtained the model-specific service schedule and realistic parts and labor estimates? |
This method can legitimately produce different conclusions about two motorcycles carrying the same badge. A newer bike with incomplete records and an unresolved campaign may be a greater risk than an older, well-documented example with completed work.
Questions to ask a seller or dealer
- What is the complete VIN, and may I run the recall lookup myself?
- Which services were completed, at what mileage and by whom?
- Are there invoices for warranty repairs, electrical work or software updates?
- Has the motorcycle been stored for long periods, used commercially or modified?
- When was the battery replaced, and how was the bike maintained during storage?
- Which warranty remains, what market’s terms apply and is the transfer recorded?
- Which authorized dealer will handle future recall or warranty work?
Specific answers supported by documents are more valuable than assurances that the motorcycle is “reliable.”
Bottom-line buying guidance
Judge an Indian motorcycle by its model year and individual history, not by a universal brand reputation. The official record includes targeted safety campaigns, but it does not provide a current brand-wide failure rate. The 92.6% UK first-time MOT result is an inspection proxy, and the historical Consumer Reports material supplies no Indian-specific figure.

For a new bike, confirm the VIN campaign status, warranty terms, service schedule and dealer coverage before delivery. For a used bike, combine those checks with documented maintenance, a cold-start inspection and an independent mechanical evaluation when the records or condition are uncertain. That process will not eliminate every repair risk, but it gives you evidence that is specific to the motorcycle you are actually considering.
