In the U.S., the make and model matter more than whether a car is called an import. Several European luxury brands tend to have higher maintenance and repair costs, while Asian brands such as Toyota and Honda show comparatively low annual averages in RepairPal data. Those are brand-level patterns—not proof that importing a car causes higher costs.
What the cost comparisons actually show
The available U.S. comparisons measure brands or vehicle categories, not a controlled import-versus-domestic premium. “Imported” can mean a foreign-owned brand or a car built outside the United States, and the cited studies do not isolate either definition while holding other factors constant. There is no supported universal percentage by which an imported car costs more to maintain or repair.

Consumer Reports: owner-reported brand costs
Consumer Reports’ December 2025 analysis of its 2025 Annual Auto Surveys asked members about out-of-pocket maintenance—including oil changes and tires—and repairs during the preceding 12 months; collision repairs were excluded. Brands were ranked by cumulative reported costs over ten years. Buick and Lincoln were the lowest-cost brands in the comparison; Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Volvo were among the more expensive. Buick’s and Lincoln’s ten-year cost was each one quarter of Land Rover’s. These are survey findings by brand, not a comparison proving that imports as a whole cost more. RepairPal averages: a useful illustration, not a quote
ConsumerAffairs reports the following average annual unscheduled repair and maintenance costs from RepairPal data. They illustrate the spread among brands, but they are not matched-model comparisons and do not control for vehicle age, model mix, or ownership circumstances.
| Brand | Average annual cost |
|---|---|
| Honda | $428 |
| Toyota | $441 |
| Volkswagen | $676 |
| BMW | $968 |
| Porsche | $1,192 |
These are RepairPal figures as published by ConsumerAffairs in 2026, not a ConsumerAffairs primary study. Toyota and Honda sit below Volkswagen, BMW, and Porsche in these cited averages, which is why “imported” is too broad a cost category. See ConsumerAffairs’ presentation of RepairPal data.

AAA: a standardized vehicle-category estimate
AAA’s 2025 Your Driving Costs estimate puts maintenance, repair, and tires at 11.04 cents per mile for its overall calculation. It uses five top-selling models in each of nine vehicle categories and standardizes costs over five years and 75,000 miles. The measure includes manufacturer-specified routine maintenance, an extended warranty, wear-item repairs, and one replacement tire set; it is not an import-specific figure. AAA cautions: “Actual driving costs will vary based on driving habits, location, operating conditions and other factors.” Read AAA’s 2025 Your Driving Costs fact sheet.

Why one car can cost more than another
Make, model, trim, and vehicle class
A mainstream imported sedan and a European luxury SUV are not equivalent cost cases. Compare the specific model year, make, model, trim, powertrain, and vehicle class. A brand average pools vehicles with different designs and repair needs, so it cannot predict the bill for a particular car.

Repair frequency, severity, and price
RepairPal reports average annual cost alongside repair-visit frequency and severity. Read those measures together: an expensive average bill can reflect costly parts or labor even if serious problems and shop visits are not frequent. Cost alone does not establish that a car is unreliable. See how RepairPal describes reliability and repair costs.
Parts, labor, and local expertise
Parts availability and labor rates can change the bill. Consumer Reports says independent shops generally charge less for labor than dealerships and often use lower-cost aftermarket parts. But a lower estimate is not automatically the right choice: software, infotainment, or safety-sensor work may call for vehicle-specific tools and experience. For a rare model or complex repair, ask whether the shop regularly works on that vehicle; a marque specialist may be worth the higher labor rate. Read Consumer Reports’ guidance on choosing a repair shop.

How to compare two cars before buying
- Match the vehicles. Compare the exact model year, trim, powertrain, and vehicle class—not just the badges or country associated with the brand.
- Use a local estimate. Enter state, annual mileage, driving ratio, vehicle year, make, model, and trim in AAA’s Your Driving Costs calculator. Treat it as a standardized estimate, not a repair quote.
- Check reliability dimensions. Look at expected repair cost, visit frequency, and severity rather than treating one annual-cost figure as a reliability verdict.
- Ask local shops for written estimates. Check whether nearby independent shops, dealers, or specialists have the tools and experience for the model, then compare likely labor and parts costs.
- Keep the ownership period consistent. Compare both cars over the same expected years and mileage. AAA’s five-year, 75,000-mile basis can be a reference, but your location, driving habits, and operating conditions may change actual costs.
For a used car, AAA Club Alliance recommends researching reliability, following scheduled maintenance, and arranging a pre-purchase inspection with a trusted mechanic. An inspection can identify condition concerns in that vehicle; it cannot guarantee its future repair costs. Read AAA Club Alliance’s maintenance and used-car advice.
