Generally, yes—but reliability belongs to the specific sedan, model year, powertrain and maintenance history, not to the badge alone. In U.S. data, the Toyota Camry has a recent edge in J.D. Power’s midsize-car dependability ranking, while Consumer Reports’ latest score puts the Camry and Honda Accord level. Those results describe surveyed vehicles, not a guarantee for every new or used car. Check the exact vehicle’s recalls, service records, accident history and condition before buying.
What “reliable” means for a Honda or Toyota sedan
Reliability is the likelihood that a vehicle performs as intended without unscheduled repairs or recurring faults over a defined period. A brand reputation is only a starting point. Two sedans wearing the same badge can differ because of model year, engine, transmission, hybrid system, production changes, software updates, driving conditions and maintenance.

For a used car, the individual example matters even more. A Camry or Accord with complete maintenance records and no major collision damage can be a safer purchase than a neglected car from a brand with an excellent reputation. Treat rankings as population-level evidence, then verify the car in front of you.

J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study places the Toyota Camry highest in the midsize-car segment. The same Camry also ranked highest in its segment in J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Initial Quality Study, which measures problems reported early in ownership. The Camry-versus-Accord comparison is summarized by J.D. The dependability study is not a prediction for a particular used car. J.D. Power describes the VDS as measuring reported problems after three years of ownership. That timing makes it useful for seeing how vehicles have held up beyond the initial ownership period, but it does not tell you whether a four-owner, poorly maintained example will be trouble-free.
Consumer Reports: Camry and Accord tie in the latest midsize score
Consumer Reports’ latest reliability reporting shows the 2025 Camry’s score rising from 56 in the prior reporting cycle to 74 in the latest one. In that report, the Camry tied the Honda Accord for second place among midsize cars. Consumer Reports bases its reliability history on owner-survey information covering about 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble spots; its methodology and Accord information are described on its most reliable cars report and 2025 Honda Accord reliability page.
A score moving from 56 to 74 is a reminder that a model’s result can change substantially as more owner reports arrive or as the model year changes. It should not be read as proof that every 2025 Camry is more dependable than every Accord, or that an older Camry automatically beats a newer Accord.
Industry context does not change the model-specific conclusion
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study reports an industry average of 202 problems per 100 vehicles, up 6% year over year. That figure is broad context for the entire industry, not a Honda- or Toyota-specific result. The release is available at J.D. Power’s 2026 VDS page.
Why J.D. Power and Consumer Reports can disagree
The Camry’s lead in one study and tie with the Accord in another are not necessarily contradictory. The organizations ask different owners different questions and use different time windows.

Use the studies to identify models worth investigating, not to skip an inspection. A ranking can reveal a pattern while still missing a defect on the particular car you are considering.
Camry versus Accord: how to make the comparison useful
If you are choosing between these midsize sedans, compare like with like. A conventional-gas Camry and a hybrid Accord are not the same mechanical proposition, and a 2025 car should not be judged solely by an older generation’s reputation.

- Match the model year: Note whether the car is from a redesign, a mid-cycle update or a carryover year. New electronics and powertrains can alter the reliability pattern.
- Identify the powertrain: Record the engine, transmission and whether the car is a hybrid. Do not transfer a result from one system to another without evidence.
- Check the vehicle’s history: Look for scheduled-service invoices, ownership changes, accident or flood records and documentation of major repairs.
- Verify recalls and completed campaigns: Use the vehicle identification number with the relevant government or manufacturer recall database in your market. A study ranking does not establish that a specific VIN has no open recall.
- Inspect condition: Have an independent technician check for leaks, warning lights, uneven tire wear, brake and suspension wear, underbody damage and signs of poor repairs.
- Confirm coverage: Determine what factory or certified-used warranty remains and whether it applies to the exact powertrain and vehicle location.
The available evidence does not establish a universal Accord-versus-Camry winner for repair costs or lifespan. Choose the better-documented, better-maintained individual after comparing equivalent years and powertrains.
Corolla versus Civic: apply the same method
For compact sedans, the sensible comparison is Toyota Corolla versus Honda Civic on the same axes: model year, engine and transmission, hybrid or non-hybrid configuration, recalls, service history and condition. The evidence cited here does not provide a current head-to-head reliability result for Corolla and Civic, so claiming that one make always lasts longer would go beyond what is established.
Questions to ask when viewing either compact sedan
- Was the car used for short trips, delivery work, rideshare driving or mostly highway miles?
- Are oil, coolant, transmission and brake services documented rather than merely reported by the seller?
- Do the dashboard, infotainment system and driver-assistance functions operate without warning messages?
- Does the VIN history show a major collision, rebuilt title, flood exposure or repeated auction sale?
- Does a cold start reveal smoke, unusual noise, rough running or delayed engagement?
Are newer Honda and Toyota hybrids reliable?
There is no basis in the cited results for declaring all newer Honda hybrids or all newer Toyota hybrids inherently more or less reliable than their gasoline counterparts. A hybrid adds components such as a high-voltage battery, power electronics, electric motors and additional cooling or control systems, while reducing some conventional-engine workload. Reliability depends on the design, model year, usage and maintenance history.

How to evaluate a used hybrid
- Confirm the exact system: Record the model year, hybrid generation and drivetrain rather than relying on a trim name.
- Review hybrid-specific records: Ask for documentation of inspections, software updates, cooling-system service and any battery or inverter work.
- Check warning indicators: A hybrid-system, battery or powertrain warning requires diagnosis before purchase, even if the car still drives normally.
- Test under varied conditions: Drive from a cold start, in traffic and at highway speed. Note smooth engine starts, regenerative braking feel, transmission behavior and transitions between electric and gasoline operation.
- Verify remaining coverage: Battery and hybrid-component coverage can differ by jurisdiction and vehicle, so obtain the terms for that VIN in writing.
Do not assume a hybrid battery is near failure simply because the car is older, and do not assume it is healthy because no warning light is on. A qualified inspection and documented diagnostic results are more useful than a generalized brand claim.
A step-by-step reliability check before buying used
1. Define the exact car
Write down the VIN, model year, body style, engine, transmission, drivetrain and odometer reading. This prevents a broad search for “reliable Honda” or “reliable Toyota” from substituting for a vehicle-specific assessment.
2. Build a maintenance timeline
Arrange invoices by date and mileage. Look for consistent scheduled maintenance, not one recent service performed immediately before sale. Missing records are a risk factor, although they do not prove neglect; ask whether services were completed elsewhere and can be documented.
3. Screen the history
Check title status, reported collisions, structural repairs, flood or fire exposure, odometer consistency and the number of previous owners. A repaired cosmetic bumper is different from structural damage, but both should be disclosed and inspected.
4. Check recalls and technical work
Search the VIN for open safety recalls and ask for proof that completed campaigns were performed. Also look for manufacturer software updates or service bulletins relevant to the exact powertrain.

5. Perform an independent inspection
Use a technician who is not financially connected to the seller. The inspection should include a scan for stored fault codes, a road test, fluid and leak checks, suspension and brake examination, tire wear, underbody damage and confirmation that safety systems function.
6. Price the risk, not the badge
Set aside money for age-related maintenance even when the car scores well in a study. If the seller will not allow an inspection or provide the VIN, treat that refusal as a condition of the transaction—not as evidence that the car is reliable.

“Toyota or Honda means trouble-free”
Neither marque guarantees zero repairs. Reliability studies measure patterns of reported problems, and every vehicle still has wear items, recalls and possible manufacturing defects.
“The highest-ranked model is always the best used buy”
Rankings do not account for a particular car’s accident damage, skipped maintenance, severe use or odometer history. Condition can outweigh a small difference in a published score.
“One generation’s result applies to every year”
Model redesigns, new transmissions, updated infotainment and hybrid-system changes can alter outcomes. Compare the exact year and powertrain represented by the evidence.

“A warning-light-free test drive proves reliability”
Some faults are intermittent or stored without an illuminated lamp. A scan, cold start and independent inspection can reveal issues a short drive misses.
“Survey scores are repair-cost forecasts”
The cited evidence does not establish a current universal repair-cost winner between Honda and Toyota sedans. Reliability frequency and repair price are separate questions; obtain model-specific estimates for the car’s age, mileage and region.

For a new buyer, compare the current model-year powertrain, warranty terms and recall status. For a used buyer, prioritize inspection quality and documented history. In both cases, Honda and Toyota sedans are sensible reliability candidates, but the exact car—not the emblem—is what you are purchasing.
