Not entirely. High-performance electric motorcycles are real production products, not just prototypes: manufacturers publish specifications for models from Can-Am, LiveWire, Energica, Verge and Zero, and LiveWire says production has begun on its S4 Honcho platform. But they are still a more deliberate purchase than a conventional motorcycle if you need long-distance flexibility, convenient charging or broad local service. Whether one is ready for you depends on your routes, budget and access to a capable dealer.
What “too early” means for an electric motorcycle buyer
The category has moved beyond the concept stage, but that does not make every model a practical substitute for a gasoline motorcycle. The real question is whether a specific bike fits your use and whether the ownership support exists where you live. Manufacturer product pages establish that models and specifications are being offered; they do not establish local inventory, independent real-world performance or service coverage.
LiveWire reported that its S4 Honcho production had commenced. The company said first units were expected at authorized retailers in summer 2026, with broader global availability continuing through 2026. That is a rollout announcement, not confirmation that a particular retailer has a bike ready to sell. LiveWire’s second-quarter 2026 results and production announcement are the company’s sources for those statements.
These motorcycles do not all serve the same rider
“Electric motorcycle” is not one use case. Can-Am describes the Pulse as a city street motorcycle, while Energica publishes specifications for performance and touring models. Verge’s TS Pro has a distinctive high-performance design. A city commuter, a rider who tours between charging stops and someone seeking acceleration on mixed roads should not judge these bikes by the same single number.

| Model or maker | What the manufacturer publishes or positions | What that establishes—and what it does not |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Can-Am Pulse, U.S. | BRP lists a $10,999 starting MSRP, up to 100 miles of city range or 80 miles combined under WMTC, 0–60 mph in 3.8 seconds, and 47 hp peak / 27 hp continuous power. | Published U.S. model-page specifications and a city-commuting position; not a guarantee of an individual rider’s range, local price or dealer stock. Can-Am Pulse specifications. |
| LiveWire ONE | The U.S. product page lists a 15.4 kWh high-voltage battery and charging and range details. | A published product specification; battery capacity alone does not settle usable range or trip charging time. The page’s savings-event language also makes it important to check current local offers and inventory. LiveWire ONE. |
| Energica Ego and Experia | Energica publishes model specifications. Its Experia page lists 22.5 kWh maximum and 19.6 kWh nominal battery capacity. | Published model specifications, not proof of current inventory or local service support. Energica models. |
| Verge TS Pro | Verge says series production began in 2023 and announced a revised TS Pro with its Donut Motor 2.0, which the company describes as 50% lighter than its predecessor. | Company claims and a production history, not an independent test or confirmation of delivery status for a particular generation. Verge TS Pro announcement. |
| Zero Motorcycles | Zero describes balancing performance, range, weight and affordability in its current motorcycle strategy. | Company positioning, not a model-specific specification. Check the current model page for the relevant market. Zero’s strategy. |
These figures should not be treated as a head-to-head test. Range and performance numbers are manufacturer-reported, and they are not directly comparable unless the model variants, test cycles, speeds, temperatures and measurement conditions match. The Can-Am page specifies WMTC for its combined range figure; a rider’s real-world result can differ with route and conditions.
How to tell whether one fits your riding
Start with your usual routes
Write down the distances you actually ride in a day, including detours and the return trip. Compare those with range claims on the exact model and variant you are considering, while allowing for the fact that a published test-cycle figure is not a promise for your riding conditions. If most trips are local and you can charge where the bike is parked, the trade-off may be manageable. Frequent long-distance rides demand a closer look at charging stops and backup options.

Look beyond peak power
Compare peak and continuous power, acceleration, top speed and handling, rather than assuming “high-performance” means the same thing across models. The Pulse listing, for example, distinguishes 47 hp peak from 27 hp continuous power. That distinction is useful when reading specifications, but it does not replace a ride on the exact bike or a comparable independent test.
Plan a representative charging trip
Check the motorcycle’s charging hardware, connector, network access and charging time against the places you actually stop. Battery capacity is only one part of the calculation: LiveWire’s 15.4 kWh figure for the ONE and Energica’s 22.5 kWh maximum / 19.6 kWh nominal figures for the Experia do not, by themselves, tell you how far you can ride or how long a trip will take.

Check the ownership support nearby
Ask a local authorized dealer to confirm inventory for the exact model and generation, warranty terms, parts availability and the service work it can perform. Verify local homologation, the license class required for the precise variant, and the final price after any applicable fees or incentives. A manufacturer’s global or national model page cannot answer those location-specific questions.

LiveWire reported 76% year-to-date U.S. share through June 30, 2026 in the on-road electric motorcycle segment above 50 kW. Its 2025 year-end filing separately reported 70% of U.S. retail sales in the above-50-horsepower on-road electric motorcycle segment for the fourth quarter of 2025. These are company-reported figures for differently described segments and periods, not measures of the entire motorcycle market or all electric motorcycles. LiveWire CEO Karim Donnez described the Honcho launch as expansion into “a highly accessible segment of the electric motorcycle market” and said the company believes it “lays the foundation for future growth.” That is the company’s view of its strategy, not independent evidence of adoption across the industry.
So, are high-performance EV motorcycles still a bit too early?
They are ready enough to be real purchase options, but not automatically ready for every rider or every region. If your riding is mostly local, charging is convenient and a nearby dealer can support the model, a current production bike may fit. If you depend on long touring range, predictable fast charging, extensive service coverage or a broad used-bike market, confirm those details before treating an electric motorcycle as a straightforward replacement. For any candidate, the deciding evidence is the exact bike, local support and a route plan that works for you—not a headline specification alone.
