Two Canadian Cybertruck owners told Drive Tesla that Tesla declined their trade-ins, but those accounts do not establish a company-wide ban. Tesla Canada’s public guidance says qualifying trucks may be traded toward a Tesla purchase, yet it does not say whether Cybertruck specifically qualifies. Owners need a vehicle-specific offer to know where their truck stands.
What was reported—and what it does not prove
In an August 20, 2026 report, Drive Tesla said two Canadian owners, Jay Zee and Jamie Mcwhirter, had their Cybertruck trade-ins declined. The outlet reported that Zee’s truck was about two years old with approximately 72,000 km, while Mcwhirter’s had 120,000 km. These are details attributed to the owners through the report, not a survey of Canadian trade-in decisions.

The report does not establish a formal written Tesla policy, that every Canadian owner has been refused, or that the same decision applies to every Cybertruck configuration or condition. It also does not include a direct explanation from Tesla. Its mention of tariffs and resale uncertainty is a possible factor, not a confirmed reason for the reported refusals. What Tesla Canada’s published rules say
Tesla Canada says it accepts eligible passenger cars, trucks, vans and SUVs toward a new or pre-owned Tesla purchase. Its guidance describes general eligibility and lists exclusions, but does not name Cybertruck as either eligible or excluded. That broad description therefore does not settle the reported cases.

Tesla says trade-in values depend on vehicle information and market conditions. The practical question is whether Tesla will issue an offer for the specific truck—not whether the general category “truck” appears on the support page. See Tesla Canada’s Trade-Ins guidance.
How to request a Tesla trade-in offer in Canada
- Place a Tesla order and receive a vehicle identification number (VIN). Tesla’s published process ties a trade-in request to a Tesla purchase.
- Submit the Cybertruck’s details through your Tesla Account. Tesla asks for information including the VIN, mileage, postal code and photos.
- Wait for Tesla to contact you when an offer is ready. The published process describes an offer based on the submitted vehicle information; it does not guarantee that Tesla will make one for a Cybertruck.
- If you accept, bring the trade-in to the delivery appointment. Account for any outstanding loan balance when comparing the offer with your expected net proceeds.
If Tesla declines the truck or does not provide an offer, ask what information or eligibility issue determined the result. A vehicle-specific answer is more useful than inferring a permanent policy from two reported cases.

Canada and the United States: a reported difference, not a confirmed model rule
Drive Tesla reported that Tesla had accepted Cybertruck trade-ins in the United States since May 2025. Tesla’s U.S. support page, however, describes qualifying trucks generally and does not specifically guarantee a Cybertruck offer. The report suggests a regional contrast, but Tesla’s published material cited here does not establish a model-specific policy in either country.

What to do if Tesla will not take the truck
Compare Tesla’s actual offer, if available, with current valuations or offers from independent buyers in your region. Confirm directly that a prospective buyer will consider a Cybertruck in your truck’s condition; the reported cases do not establish which marketplaces accept them or what they would pay. Compare net proceeds after any loan payoff, along with the time and paperwork involved in each route.

For a private sale, Tesla’s Cybertruck Owner’s Manual explains how to factory reset the truck and remove or transfer it from the Tesla account using the app. It also notes that some subscriptions, upgrades or features may not transfer. This is an ownership-transfer step, not a purchase offer. Consult the Cybertruck Owner’s Manual before handing over the vehicle.

The available evidence supports a narrower story: two Canadian owners told a Tesla-focused outlet their Cybertruck trade-ins were declined, while Tesla Canada’s public page describes trucks as generally eligible but does not address Cybertruck specifically. No Tesla explanation for those reported decisions is provided in the cited sources. Tesla’s general remarketing disclosure does not resolve the question either. These facts do not establish that Tesla is financially distressed or that it has banned Cybertruck trade-ins.
