BMW electric cars can be reasonably reliable, but there is no single reliability score for the entire lineup. Your risk depends on the exact model year, trim, mileage, software history and VIN-specific recalls. Consumer Reports rates the 2025 BMW i4 about average for reliability among cars from that model year and predicts about average reliability for the 2026 i4 from 2023–2025 data. Those findings do not establish the reliability of every i4, i5 or iX.
Ownership is also more than oil-change savings. A five-year Edmunds estimate is $66,795 for a 2025 i4 eDrive40 and $90,949 for a 2026 iX xDrive45, including depreciation, insurance, financing, taxes and fees, energy, maintenance and repairs. Those are planning estimates based on 15,000 miles per year, not guaranteed bills.

What the reliability evidence actually shows
Consumer Reports: model-year results for the i4
Consumer Reports’ 2025 BMW i4 page describes reliability as about average compared with other cars from the same model year and lists two NHTSA recalls. Its 2026 i4 page predicts about average reliability using data from 2023 through 2025. “About average” means the i4 is not identified as an outlier in either direction; it is not a guarantee that an individual car will be trouble-free.
The available results are i4-specific. They cannot be used to assign the same score to the larger iX SUV, the i5 sedan or the i7. Public, directly comparable results were not established for every BMW battery-electric model, so a buyer should look up the exact year and model rather than rely on a BMW-wide reputation.

Why brand averages are a poor EV buying shortcut
Consumer Reports says its reliability history comes from a subscriber survey covering about 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble spots. Its 2025 methodology cautions readers not to judge a vehicle solely by brand rankings. As senior director of auto testing Jake Fisher put it: “While brand rankings can guide you to the showroom, it’s critical to look at reliability for specific models before making a purchase.”
RepairPal reports a 2.5 out of 5 reliability rating for the BMW brand, ranking it 30th of 32 brands, with an average annual repair cost of $968. These figures combine BMW models and powertrains; they are not an i4, i5 or iX failure rate and should not be inserted into an EV budget as though they were model-specific.
A 2025 drive-power recall makes the VIN check essential
A July 2025 recall covered certain 2022–2025 i4, 2022–2024 iX, 2023–2024 i7 and 2024 i5 vehicles. Electric-drive motor software could shut down the high-voltage system and cause a loss of drive power. The listed remedy was a free software update, delivered over the air or by a BMW dealer.

“Certain” is important: a model year in the recall range does not prove that every vehicle is affected. Before buying or accepting a delivery, run the vehicle identification number through BMW’s current recall lookup and ask for documentation that every open campaign has been completed. Recheck the VIN after purchase because campaign information and remedy status can change.
BMW warranties that affect reliability risk
For new U.S.-market BMWs, the warranty terms separate ordinary vehicle defects from high-voltage battery capacity. Confirm the booklet and in-service date for the specific car, especially on an imported, used or certified vehicle.
| Coverage | Published U.S. term | How to use it when evaluating a car |
|---|---|---|
| BMW Ultimate Care scheduled maintenance | 3 years or 36,000 miles | Reduces covered routine-service bills during the initial period; it does not cover every wear item or repair. |
| Roadside assistance | 4 years, unlimited miles | Useful for a new-car ownership plan, but it is not mechanical reliability coverage. |
| High-voltage traction battery defect warranty | 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first | Covers qualifying defects, subject to the warranty’s exclusions and procedures. |
| 2026-model-year BEV capacity protection | Cell modules below 70% state of health for 8 years or 100,000 miles, when confirmed by an authorized BMW center | This is a capacity-loss threshold, not a promise that the battery will retain a particular range every day. |
| BMW Certified pre-owned limited protection | One year with unlimited miles after the 4-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle warranty expires | Check eligibility, the original in-service date and the CPO contract for exclusions. |
Capacity loss is not the same as a battery defect
BMW’s battery defect warranty and its capacity-loss provisions address different issues. A defective component can qualify for repair under the defect terms, while gradual loss of usable capacity is governed by a separate threshold and, for some vehicles, a separate delivery-date rule. BMW states that its Certified EV information covers capacity loss for model-year 2022–2025 certified all-electric vehicles with retail delivery dates from March 1, 2026, for eight years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date. Ask the seller to identify the exact provision that applies; do not assume every used BMW EV has the same capacity guarantee.

What maintenance an electric BMW still needs
Items an EV largely eliminates
There is no engine oil, oil filter, spark-plug service or exhaust system to maintain. Regenerative braking can also reduce friction-brake use. Those differences can lower scheduled service compared with a gasoline BMW, particularly during the first years.
Items that remain on the service schedule
BMW says electric vehicles still need regular checkups. Tires, wheel alignment, windshield wipers, cabin filters, brake components, suspension parts, cooling systems and software diagnostics can all create bills. Tire wear can be significant because an EV is heavy and delivers immediate torque. Edmunds counts tires among examples of unscheduled maintenance in its ownership methodology, so a low oil-change count should not be mistaken for zero maintenance.
For a used car, request digital and paper service records, verify software campaigns, inspect tires for uneven wear and ask whether a BMW center can provide a battery health assessment. No universal BMW EV degradation rate or universal replacement-battery price has been established, so a seller’s claim about “normal” range loss should be supported by vehicle-specific data.

Five-year ownership-cost examples
Edmunds’ True Cost to Own tool provides a useful comparison framework. It assumes 15,000 miles annually, five years of ownership, traditional financing, 10% down, a 60-month loan and above-average credit. The figures below are U.S. estimates accessed in 2026 and exclude federal EV tax credits.
| Cost category | 2025 BMW i4 eDrive40 | 2026 BMW iX xDrive45 |
|---|---|---|
| Total five-year True Cost to Own | $66,795 | $90,949 |
| Depreciation | $37,221 | $53,496 |
| Insurance | $5,287 | $3,191 |
| Maintenance | $4,242 | $4,583 |
| Repairs | $2,113 | $2,774 |
| Financing | $11,632 | $16,719 |
| Taxes and fees | $3,291 | $4,817 |
| Fuel or energy | $3,009 | $5,369 |
The iX total is higher primarily because it is a larger, more expensive vehicle with greater depreciation and financing assumptions. The table is not a controlled test: it compares different model years and vehicle classes. Edmunds describes the tool as comparative rather than predictive. Your purchase price, ZIP code, credit, annual mileage, insurance record, electricity rate and resale market can move every major line.

BMW illustrates charging with a 100-kWh battery and electricity priced at $0.30 per kWh. Multiplying those figures gives $30 for a theoretical full charge before charging losses. Owners normally charge before the battery is empty, and real energy use varies with temperature, speed, tires, payload and conditioning.

Use your local utility tariff and the vehicle’s measured consumption instead of treating $30 as a universal bill. Separate home charging from public fast charging, include demand or session fees where applicable, and account for the efficiency loss between the wall and the battery. A home Level 2 installation can lower the per-mile energy price for a driver with suitable electrical capacity, but installation cost and connector compatibility belong in the budget.
Insurance, financing and depreciation often dominate
Routine maintenance is only one part of ownership. Edmunds’ i4 estimate assigns $37,221 to depreciation, $11,632 to financing and $5,287 to insurance over five years. For the iX, depreciation is $53,496 and financing is $16,719. Obtain insurance quotes using the exact VIN and driver profile before signing, and compare the purchase price and loan rate rather than focusing only on the advertised monthly payment.

- Identify the exact configuration. Record model, model year, trim, battery or drivetrain version, mileage and original in-service date. Warranty clocks use those details.
- Run the VIN through current recall records. Confirm whether the drive-power software campaign or any other campaign applies and obtain proof of the completed remedy.
- Verify warranty eligibility in writing. Ask which basic, battery-defect and capacity-loss provisions remain, and whether a certified plan adds protection.
- Review service history. Look for scheduled inspections, tire replacements, alignment work, cooling-system service and software updates.
- Request a battery health check. A BMW-authorized assessment or documented diagnostic result is more useful than a dashboard range estimate taken on one mild-weather day.
- Inspect wear items. Check tire tread and date codes, uneven wear, brake corrosion, suspension noise, charging-port condition and both AC and DC charging operation.
- Price your actual ownership. Enter your mileage, ZIP code, financing terms, electricity rate and insurance quotes into a cost calculator, then add a reserve for tires and unexpected repairs.
Compare candidates on the same axes

When a BMW EV is a sensible purchase
A BMW electric car is easier to justify when you can charge mostly at home, plan to keep it through the warranty period, obtain a favorable insurance quote and choose a vehicle with documented service and completed recalls. The i4’s “about average” model-year reliability result supports a normal level of caution rather than an automatic rejection.
Be more conservative with a used example that has no battery-health documentation, an unclear in-service date, open campaigns, unusually worn tires or a price that only works if resale remains strong. Public-charging dependence, high annual mileage and expensive insurance can erase the savings from reduced routine service.
Bottom line for buyers
BMW electric cars are not reliably characterized by one brand-wide verdict. Treat the i4’s 2025 and 2026 Consumer Reports results as model-year evidence, check every VIN for recalls, and read the battery capacity terms separately from defect coverage. Budget the complete ownership picture: depreciation, insurance, financing, energy, maintenance, tires, repairs and taxes. The published five-year examples—$66,795 for a 2025 i4 eDrive40 and $90,949 for a 2026 iX xDrive45—are useful benchmarks only after you replace their assumptions with your own numbers.
