A May 2024 report said the companies may have discussed a partnership, but the claim remained unconfirmed. The report followed Apple’s reported decision to wind down Project Titan; Rivian’s documented technology partnership was instead with Volkswagen Group.
Short answer: Apple was reported to have explored a partnership with Rivian in May 2024, but the claim was never confirmed as a signed deal, a revived Apple Car program, or an Apple-branded vehicle. The report came only a few months after Apple reportedly wound down its decade-long Project Titan effort. Rivian’s documented technology partnership was with Volkswagen Group—not Apple.
What the Apple–Rivian report actually said
On May 7, 2024, AppleInsider reported that Apple may have discussed a partnership with Rivian. The possibility was presented as a way that some form of the Apple Car project could potentially continue after Apple scaled back its own vehicle development.
That was a report about possible discussions, not an announcement. It did not establish that Apple and Rivian had signed an agreement, disclose commercial terms, identify a vehicle, provide a production schedule, or quote either company confirming the talks. MacRumors likewise characterized the development as a rumor.

The most accurate description is therefore: Apple was reported to have explored a Rivian partnership after winding down Project Titan, but the claim remained unconfirmed in the reviewed public record.
How the timing fits the Project Titan story
Apple reportedly began exploring an electric vehicle around 2014 under the internal name Project Titan. Over roughly a decade, the project was associated with changing leaders, vehicle concepts, autonomy targets, software ambitions, and manufacturing plans. A Bloomberg retrospective described the program’s shifting direction, including movement between a highly autonomous vehicle and a less ambitious driver-assistance-focused concept.
On February 27, 2024, Bloomberg reported that Apple was canceling the electric-car effort and moving some employees toward generative-AI work. The report represented a major retreat from Apple’s attempt to develop a vehicle of its own.
The Rivian story followed on May 7—only a little over two months later. That sequence explains why the rumor attracted attention: a partnership with an established EV manufacturer could, in theory, have offered Apple a way to preserve some automotive ambitions without continuing to build an entire vehicle program internally.

Rivian was a natural subject for speculation for several reasons:

- It is a U.S.-based electric-vehicle manufacturer with experience developing and producing connected vehicles.
- Rivian has built an integrated software and electrical architecture, potentially relevant to a company interested in controlling the in-car user experience.
- Former Apple personnel moved to Rivian. Reporting connected Apple veterans including DJ Novotney and Jonas Reinke with Rivian roles. AppleInsider later covered another former Apple hardware engineer joining Rivian.
Those facts make a partnership strategically imaginable, but they do not prove that negotiations occurred. Hiring a former employee is evidence of personnel overlap—not evidence of a corporate agreement.
What a hypothetical partnership could have looked like
One possible division of labor would have had Apple contributing elements such as industrial design, software, services, user-interface expertise, or brand experience, while Rivian supplied vehicle engineering, EV manufacturing knowledge, an existing platform, and automotive operations. That is business analysis, not a disclosed term of any Apple–Rivian discussion.
There is also a fundamental trade-off. A partnership could reduce the engineering and manufacturing burden for Apple, but it would limit Apple’s control over the vehicle platform and expose both companies to difficult questions about branding, economics, liability, service, production capacity, and technology ownership. None of those issues was resolved publicly in the May 2024 report.
What Rivian publicly documented instead
The strongest public-record check points to Volkswagen Group, not Apple.
In a November 2024 Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Rivian described a joint venture with Volkswagen Group focused on electrical architecture, software, electronic control units, and related network-architecture design and development. The filing said Rivian and Volkswagen would each own 50% of the joint venture.

Rivian’s Q2 2024 shareholder letter described Volkswagen’s investment and the planned joint venture as a significant opportunity to commercialize Rivian’s vertically integrated software and electrical architecture. It identified Rivian’s R2 platform as the lead program for the partnership.
Rivian’s later annual-report material continued to identify the Volkswagen relationship as its major technology partnership. The reviewed corporate disclosures do not identify Apple as a joint-venture partner or confirm that the rumored Apple discussions became a transaction.

Apple Car rumors are not the same as CarPlay support
A possible corporate discussion between Apple and Rivian should not be confused with Rivian adopting Apple CarPlay.
Rivian has pursued its own in-vehicle software stack and has publicly resisted conventional phone-mirroring systems. Later reporting quoted Rivian’s software leadership arguing that deeply integrated vehicle software and artificial intelligence reduce the appeal of conventional CarPlay-style screen mirroring. MacRumors reported those comments; they do not establish an Apple vehicle partnership.
Rivian shareholder materials have described its software platform, over-the-air updates, and in-vehicle services, including Apple Music and Audible. Those integrations are documented in Rivian’s shareholder materials, but an Apple Music or Audible app in a Rivian is not the same as CarPlay, and neither integration proves that Apple was developing a vehicle with Rivian.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bottom line
The Apple–Rivian story was a May 2024 rumor about possible talks, not proof that Apple revived the Apple Car. The timing made the idea plausible: Apple had reportedly wound down Project Titan, Rivian had relevant EV and software capabilities, and former Apple employees had joined Rivian. But those clues are not confirmation.
Rivian’s documented technology partnership was with Volkswagen Group, including a 50–50 joint venture centered on Rivian’s electrical architecture and software. Until Apple or Rivian announces otherwise—or a reliable corporate filing provides evidence—the responsible conclusion is that no confirmed Apple–Rivian vehicle program has been established.
