Apple CarPlay vs. MirrorLink: Is There a Need for Both?

CarPlay remains a current option for iPhone drivers, while MirrorLink is largely a legacy feature. For Android, look to Android Auto—not MirrorLink.

For most drivers, no. Apple CarPlay is an active iPhone-to-car platform; MirrorLink is a legacy technology that is no longer a practical choice for most current phone users. If you drive an Android phone, the modern counterpart to CarPlay is Android Auto. A new stereo supporting both CarPlay and MirrorLink is rarely worth choosing for the MirrorLink feature.

The short answer

  • iPhone: Choose Apple CarPlay.
  • Android phone: Look for Android Auto.
  • A shared car with both iPhone and Android users: A stereo supporting CarPlay and Android Auto can make sense.
  • An older car with MirrorLink: The feature may still appear in its menus, but that does not mean a current phone can use it. Bluetooth, an auxiliary connection, or a compatible aftermarket stereo may be more practical.

MirrorLink can matter to someone preserving a specific older phone-and-car setup that already works. For ordinary new-car or stereo shopping, however, it is not a meaningful rival to CarPlay.

What CarPlay does—and what it doesn’t

CarPlay connects a compatible iPhone to a vehicle or stereo and presents supported apps in a car-oriented interface. Drivers can use supported navigation, audio, calling, and messaging apps, with Siri available for voice interaction. The phone supplies much of the software experience; the vehicle provides the screen, controls, microphone, and speakers, with the precise integration varying by vehicle and stereo. Apple describes CarPlay’s features and compatible systems, while its support guide explains the apps available in CarPlay.

CarPlay may connect by USB or wirelessly, but wireless support is not universal. Check the specific vehicle or stereo rather than assuming that a CarPlay logo means wireless CarPlay.

CarPlay is not simply unrestricted screen mirroring, nor does it replace every part of a vehicle’s software. Climate controls, drive settings, cameras, and other vehicle functions may remain in the factory system. More deeply integrated features depend on the car and its implementation. Apple’s newer CarPlay architecture, CarPlay Ultra, began rolling out in May 2025, initially with Aston Martin vehicles; it is a more integrated generation, not a reason to use MirrorLink. Apple says driving-related functions continue to rely on the vehicle’s built-in system. See Apple’s developer documentation for integration details.

What MirrorLink was

MirrorLink was an industry standard intended to connect compatible phones to compatible vehicle systems and display approved phone content in the car. Despite the name, it did not behave as identical, unrestricted screen mirroring in every vehicle. What appeared on screen depended on the phone, its software, the vehicle or head unit, and supported applications.

That many-way compatibility requirement made MirrorLink difficult to rely on: a phone and a car both needed to support the right implementation. Support was associated with some older phones and vehicle systems, but it declined, and old compatibility listings do not establish that a current phone will work.

Is MirrorLink discontinued?

Samsung says its MirrorLink service ended on June 1, 2020, and that MirrorLink is no longer available on Android devices. That is a concrete end-of-service date for Samsung’s support; it does not mean every car or head unit stopped working on that date. Some legacy systems may still show a MirrorLink menu, and a particular older phone-and-vehicle combination may still function. But a dormant menu is not evidence of a usable modern ecosystem. See Samsung’s MirrorLink support notice.

When a current stereo listing says “MirrorLink,” treat it as a legacy feature or a potentially imprecise marketing label—not proof of broad compatibility with today’s phones. Check the manufacturer’s exact compatibility information, and do not confuse MirrorLink with certified CarPlay or Android Auto.

CarPlay vs. MirrorLink

Question Apple CarPlay MirrorLink
Current relevance Active Apple platform for compatible iPhones and vehicles Legacy technology; not a practical mainstream choice for current users
Phone focus iPhone Historically, selected compatible phones, including some Android models
Navigation, audio, calls, messages Supported through compatible apps and vehicle integration Varied by phone, vehicle, software, and approved apps
Connectivity Wired or wireless, depending on the vehicle or stereo Varied by implementation; do not assume current compatibility
New-system buying value Useful for iPhone owners, subject to exact compatibility Usually not worth paying extra for
Modern counterpart for Android Not applicable Android Auto is the relevant current option

The real modern choice: CarPlay or Android Auto

For most buyers, the decision follows the phone they use: CarPlay for iPhone, Android Auto for Android. If a vehicle is shared by people using both platforms, a system supporting both CarPlay and Android Auto is the useful kind of dual compatibility. Google maintains separate lists for Android Auto-compatible vehicles and compatible stereos.

Apple says CarPlay is available across more than 800 vehicle models and lists several aftermarket-system brands, but the number is not a guarantee that every trim, model year, country, or head unit has the same features. Start with Apple’s vehicle list, then confirm the exact equipment with the automaker or stereo maker. The same rule applies to Android Auto: verify the specific vehicle or head unit, not just the model name.

Why CarPlay remained relevant while MirrorLink faded

The difference is more useful to understand as an ecosystem issue than as a simple claim that one technology was inherently better. CarPlay focuses on the iPhone, with Apple defining the platform and a developer framework for compatible in-car apps. That gives drivers a clearer question to answer—does this vehicle or stereo support CarPlay?—and Apple continues to document new vehicle integrations and capabilities.

MirrorLink depended on more parties lining up: phone maker, phone software, vehicle manufacturer, head-unit vendor, and app support. Compatibility could therefore be fragmented and hard to check. As phone makers and car systems moved toward other options, MirrorLink’s practical value diminished. That is an explanation of the ecosystem’s decline, not a claim that every participant announced the same end date.

If your car only has MirrorLink

You do not necessarily need to replace the car. Choose an option based on what you want to do:

  • Bluetooth: Often enough for calls and music, and sometimes voice-assistant access through the phone. It does not provide the same integrated dashboard interface as CarPlay or Android Auto. Available functions vary by vehicle.
  • Auxiliary or USB audio: An older car’s 3.5-mm auxiliary input or USB audio may let you play phone audio. A Bluetooth receiver can be another option if the system lacks Bluetooth. These approaches generally offer less integrated control than a modern phone-link platform.
  • Aftermarket stereo: A compatible head unit can add CarPlay, Android Auto, or both. Apple lists aftermarket systems from brands including Alpine, Blaupunkt, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony; availability and fit vary. Check Apple’s current CarPlay information and confirm the exact product’s features.
  • Used-car purchase: Do not value a MirrorLink logo as equivalent to current CarPlay or Android Auto. Verify the exact model year, trim, head unit, market, and phone compatibility before buying.

For an older vehicle, the stereo price is only part of the job. Check whether installation requires a dash kit or wiring harness, and whether the setup will retain steering-wheel controls, a backup camera, a factory amplifier, parking sensors, USB ports, or the vehicle’s microphone. Ask for an itemized installed-cost estimate; prices and labor vary with the vehicle and required interfaces.

What to check before buying a car or stereo

  1. Confirm your phone platform. iPhone users should look for CarPlay; Android users should look for Android Auto. For a mixed-phone household, check for both.
  2. Verify the exact vehicle or head unit. Confirm trim, model year, country, factory options, and stereo model. A model listing is a starting point, not proof that every configuration has the feature.
  3. Check wired versus wireless operation. A system may support CarPlay or Android Auto only over USB. Do not assume wireless support from the platform name alone.
  4. Check the connection and controls you need. Confirm the right USB port, data support, steering-wheel controls, camera retention, factory amplifier, and screen-control method.
  5. Consider software and support. Check firmware availability, warranty, and whether the maker clearly documents compatibility. Do not pay a premium for MirrorLink unless you have a specific working legacy setup to preserve.

Common connection problems

“My car has MirrorLink, but my phone will not connect.”

The phone may no longer support MirrorLink, the car may support only a narrow list of devices, or the necessary legacy software may no longer be available. Check the phone maker’s support information and the vehicle manual for the exact supported devices. A USB cable will not necessarily restore a feature the phone no longer supports. If compatibility cannot be confirmed, use Bluetooth or an auxiliary connection, or consider a compatible replacement stereo.

Only suitable for vehicles manufactured in 2016 and later
  • Compact design: The wireless carplay adapter will not block any interface, and its small size ensures that it will not interfere with other devices and save space

“The stereo says CarPlay, but it will not connect.”

Check that you are using the correct USB port and a cable that carries data, not just power. For wireless systems, confirm pairing and the required Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections. Also check that the stereo is set to the correct source, another phone is not occupying the connection, and the system’s software is current. Initial setup, Siri requirements, and iPhone settings can vary by system and software version; use Apple’s current CarPlay guidance and the vehicle manual rather than relying on a universal menu path.

“Calls and music work, but I do not see CarPlay.”

You may be connected over Bluetooth alone. Bluetooth can carry calls and audio without providing the dashboard interface of CarPlay or Android Auto.

“Navigation works on the screen, but not in the instrument cluster.”

Basic CarPlay compatibility does not guarantee deeper integration such as route prompts in an instrument cluster or head-up display. That capability depends on the vehicle, stereo, app, and implementation; Apple documents it as an integration option, not a feature of every CarPlay system.

Bottom line

MirrorLink’s history does not create a current need to buy it alongside CarPlay. Choose CarPlay for an iPhone, Android Auto for an Android phone, and both modern platforms when a vehicle is shared across phone types. Treat MirrorLink as a legacy compatibility feature only when you already own a specific older setup that works.
