Unlike standard CarPlay, which usually occupies the center infotainment screen, Ultra can extend across the entire driver-facing cockpit—including the instrument cluster—and can expose selected vehicle controls inside the CarPlay experience.
It is not a software update that every CarPlay-equipped car can receive, and a wireless CarPlay adapter cannot add it to an incompatible vehicle. CarPlay Ultra requires cooperation between Apple and the automaker, compatible vehicle hardware, and an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later. It launched with Aston Martin in the United States and Canada on May 15, 2025.
What is Apple CarPlay Ultra?
CarPlay Ultra is a deeply integrated version of CarPlay designed to make the iPhone experience and the vehicle’s own information available across multiple cockpit displays.

With standard CarPlay, navigation, music, messages, calls, and other supported apps generally appear on the vehicle’s central infotainment display. Ultra can also place information and controls in the instrument cluster and other driver-facing areas. That allows a driver to see maps, vehicle information, and selected driving-related data without treating the center screen as the only CarPlay surface.
Apple describes Ultra as a wireless experience that depends on the driver’s iPhone being present. The vehicle’s built-in system continues to power core driving functions; Ultra is not a replacement for the car’s underlying operating and safety systems.

What can CarPlay Ultra do?
The exact feature set varies by vehicle. Automakers decide which vehicle data, settings, and controls they expose, so an Aston Martin implementation should not be treated as a promise that every future Ultra vehicle will work identically.

CarPlay Ultra can distribute information across the center display, instrument cluster, and other compatible driver-facing screens. Apple’s examples include:
- Turn-by-turn navigation and maps
- Media and audio controls
- Custom speedometer and tachometer layouts
- Fuel and temperature gauges
- Advanced driver-assistance information
- Tire-pressure information
The practical advantage is consistency: navigation, media, and selected vehicle information can share a visual system instead of being divided between an Apple interface and a separate automaker display.
Control selected vehicle functions
Depending on the vehicle, drivers can use the touchscreen, physical controls, or Siri for functions such as radio and climate control. An automaker may also make vehicle-specific settings available, including audio-system configuration or performance settings.
These controls are not universal. CarPlay Ultra does not automatically gain access to every setting in every vehicle. The automaker must build the necessary software and data connections and decide which functions are appropriate to expose through CarPlay.
Customize the cockpit
Ultra supports widgets, wallpapers, colors, and selectable gauge-cluster designs. Automakers can also retain their own visual identity and design language. That means the experience is customizable without necessarily making every supported car look like an identical Apple product.
Keep using Siri and familiar CarPlay features
Voice control remains part of the experience, allowing drivers to interact with supported functions through Siri. Apple has also said that software-level improvements introduced for CarPlay—including widgets, a refreshed design, compact incoming-call presentation, Messages Tapbacks and pinned conversations, and Live Activities—come to CarPlay Ultra as well.

Those software features should be separated from Ultra’s defining capability: multi-display, vehicle-integrated operation. A standard CarPlay vehicle may receive interface improvements without becoming a CarPlay Ultra vehicle.
How CarPlay Ultra works
CarPlay Ultra combines three components:
- Your iPhone: The iPhone supplies the personal CarPlay experience and must be present for the wireless system to appear.
- The vehicle’s compatible hardware: The car needs appropriate displays, controls, connectivity, and infotainment hardware.
- Automaker integration: The manufacturer must connect vehicle data and selected functions to CarPlay and provide the software needed to operate them safely.
Apple’s developer documentation describes Ultra as completely wireless and says it appears when the vehicle displays turn on. The car’s built-in system remains responsible for driving features and vehicle operation. This division matters: losing an iPhone connection may affect the CarPlay layer, but it does not turn off the vehicle’s fundamental driving systems.

In other words, Ultra is not an independent operating system installed on the phone, nor is it a generic interface that an aftermarket accessory can reproduce. It is a coordinated layer between iOS and a specific vehicle platform.
CarPlay Ultra requirements
iPhone requirement
Apple’s launch requirement is an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later. Newer iPhones and later iOS releases may also be supported, but the vehicle still needs its own Ultra-compatible integration.
If you are replacing an older phone, an iPhone 12 or later is the relevant minimum product category to check. Buying a compatible iPhone alone will not add Ultra to a car that only supports standard CarPlay.
Vehicle requirement
The car must be specifically compatible with CarPlay Ultra. Ordinary wired or wireless CarPlay support is not enough. The vehicle needs the automaker’s next-generation infotainment hardware and software, including the display, vehicle-data, control, and safety-related integration required by Ultra.
Market, model, and trim requirement
Compatibility can vary by model, model year, trim, production batch, software version, and country. A manufacturer’s general statement that it supports CarPlay Ultra should not be treated as proof that every vehicle in its range does.
Which cars support Apple CarPlay Ultra?
Aston Martin: the launch partner
CarPlay Ultra began rolling out on May 15, 2025, with new Aston Martin vehicle orders in the United States and Canada. Apple said existing Aston Martin vehicles equipped with the brand’s latest next-generation infotainment system would receive the experience through a software update in the following weeks. Apple also said the rollout would expand globally over the following 12 months.

Aston Martin’s official materials describe integration with the central display and instrument cluster. Its implementation includes examples such as speed, RPM, fuel level, gear selection, driver-assistance alerts, climate and active-safety controls, 3D camera views, performance settings, widgets, and voice control.
Those features illustrate what deep integration can look like, but they are Aston Martin-specific examples. Official Aston Martin model pages identify CarPlay Ultra support across parts of the current core range, including vehicles such as the DB12, DB12 Volante, DBX707, Vantage, and Vantage Roadster. Availability varies by model and market, so buyers and existing owners should confirm the exact vehicle with an Aston Martin dealer before assuming that a particular car has Ultra or qualifies for an update.

Apple has publicly named Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis as additional automakers working to bring CarPlay Ultra to drivers.
That announcement does not, by itself, establish which models, trims, countries, or production dates are supported. It also does not confirm a retrofit policy. Until the relevant automaker publishes an exact vehicle and market announcement, these brands should be described as announced or prospective partners—not as brands with an already completed, lineup-wide Ultra rollout.
Why the standard CarPlay compatibility list is not enough
Apple’s general list of CarPlay-compatible vehicles includes hundreds of models, but it covers standard CarPlay. It should not be used as a CarPlay Ultra compatibility list.
Before purchasing a vehicle, look specifically for the words CarPlay Ultra in the automaker’s information for the exact model, trim, model year, and market. If the listing only says “Apple CarPlay,” ask whether that means standard CarPlay or Ultra.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat CarPlay Ultra is not
- It is not a universal aftermarket upgrade. A car with a touchscreen or standard CarPlay cannot automatically receive Ultra.
- It is not the same as wireless CarPlay. Wireless standard CarPlay can connect an iPhone without a cable, but Ultra adds automaker-level multi-screen and vehicle-function integration.
- It does not provide every vehicle control in every car. The manufacturer determines which functions are available.
- It does not replace the vehicle’s underlying software. Core driving functions and safety systems remain powered by the car.
- It does not follow from standard CarPlay support. A compatible CarPlay head unit is not proof of Ultra compatibility.
How to check whether a car really supports Ultra
- Identify the exact vehicle: Record the make, model, model year, trim, VIN if applicable, and market or country.
- Check the automaker’s model page: Look for an explicit CarPlay Ultra reference, not merely “Apple CarPlay.”
- Confirm the hardware: Ask whether the car has the required next-generation infotainment system and compatible driver-facing displays.
- Ask about delivery: Find out whether Ultra is factory-installed, delivered by a software update, limited to particular production batches, or unavailable as a retrofit.
- Confirm the phone: Use an iPhone 12 or later with iOS 18.5 or later.
- Get the answer in writing when buying: Dealer listings and sales descriptions can be ambiguous. Ask the dealer to confirm Ultra for that exact car and market.
For Aston Martin owners, the official guidance is to consult a local dealer because availability varies. This is especially important for existing vehicles that may have the latest next-generation infotainment hardware but still need a software update.
CarPlay Ultra versus standard CarPlay
| Feature | Standard CarPlay | CarPlay Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Typical display | Usually the center infotainment screen | Center screen plus compatible driver-facing displays, including the instrument cluster |
| iPhone connection | Wired or wireless, depending on the vehicle | Designed as a wireless experience and requires the iPhone to be present |
| Vehicle information | Depends largely on the automaker and head unit | Can include gauges, vehicle data, ADAS information, and tire-pressure data when integrated by the automaker |
| Vehicle controls | Some vehicles expose limited controls | Can expose climate, audio, performance, and other vehicle-specific functions, depending on the model |
| Hardware requirement | Compatible CarPlay system | Compatible automaker hardware and deeper software integration |
| Aftermarket adapter path | A wireless adapter may help convert wired standard CarPlay to wireless standard CarPlay | No generic adapter upgrade path |
Common buying mistakes
Mistake 1: Treating “wireless CarPlay” as “CarPlay Ultra”
Wireless describes how the phone connects. Ultra describes how deeply CarPlay is integrated into the vehicle. They are different concepts.
Mistake 2: Assuming every new Aston Martin has the same feature set
Aston Martin is the launch partner, but support and features can vary by model, market, and infotainment generation. Confirm the exact vehicle.
Mistake 3: Assuming a future partner announcement is a current sales listing
Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have been named as brands working toward support, but a brand-level announcement is not a model-by-model availability confirmation.
Mistake 4: Buying an iPhone first and expecting the car to follow
An iPhone 12 or later is necessary under Apple’s launch requirements, but it is only one part of the compatibility chain. The vehicle must also support Ultra.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens if the iPhone is missing or disconnected?
CarPlay Ultra depends on the driver’s iPhone being present. If the phone is not available, the Ultra layer cannot provide the personal iPhone experience. The car’s built-in system remains the source of the vehicle’s core driving functions, which is why an absent phone does not mean the vehicle itself stops operating.

For day-to-day reliability, keep the iPhone updated, ensure Bluetooth and wireless connectivity are available as required by the vehicle, and follow the automaker’s pairing instructions. If a problem affects vehicle controls or safety-related information, use the vehicle’s own controls and consult the dealer rather than treating it as an ordinary phone-mirroring fault.
Should you wait for CarPlay Ultra?
Ultra is most relevant if you are already shopping for a compatible vehicle and value a consistent interface across the center screen and instrument cluster. It may also appeal to owners of an eligible Aston Martin with the required next-generation infotainment hardware.

It is not a reason to replace an otherwise suitable car solely because it has standard CarPlay. The current limitation is availability: Ultra requires a small and growing set of automaker implementations, and the exact rollout depends on model and market.
If your current vehicle has wired standard CarPlay, a wireless adapter may improve convenience, but that is a standard-CarPlay upgrade—not a path to Ultra.
A practical CarPlay Ultra checklist
- Does the exact make, model, model year, trim, and market support CarPlay Ultra?
- Does it have the automaker’s required next-generation infotainment hardware?
- Is Ultra factory-installed, delivered by update, or unavailable as a retrofit?
- Do you have an iPhone 12 or later?
- Is the phone running iOS 18.5 or later?
- Which instrument-cluster data and vehicle controls are actually supported in that model?
- Has the local dealer confirmed availability for the specific vehicle?
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add CarPlay Ultra with a wireless CarPlay adapter?
No. A wireless adapter can help a compatible vehicle use ordinary wired CarPlay wirelessly, but it cannot add Ultra’s multi-display integration or automaker-controlled vehicle functions.
What iPhone is required for CarPlay Ultra?
Apple’s launch requirement is an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later. The compatible vehicle requirement still applies.
Does CarPlay Ultra replace the car’s operating system?
No. The vehicle’s built-in system continues to power core driving functions. Ultra is an integrated CarPlay layer that uses the iPhone while working with automaker hardware and software.
Is CarPlay Ultra available in every Aston Martin?
Not necessarily. Aston Martin is the launch partner, but availability varies by model, infotainment generation, market, and possibly production batch. Confirm the exact vehicle with an Aston Martin dealer.
Do Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis currently support CarPlay Ultra?
Apple has named those brands as working toward support, but the available research does not establish a complete model, trim, or market rollout. Check the relevant automaker’s current official announcement before buying.
The Bottom Line
CarPlay Ultra is a vehicle-integration platform, not an accessory. It can bring iPhone content, gauges, navigation, and selected vehicle controls to multiple cockpit displays, but only automakers with compatible hardware and software can enable it. Before buying, verify the exact car and market, confirm whether support is factory-installed or delivered by update, and use an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later.
