Apple CarPlay Ultra extends CarPlay beyond the center screen: on supported vehicles, it can also appear in the instrument cluster and other driver-facing displays, combining iPhone features with vehicle information and controls. The launch began with Aston Martin in the United States and Canada, but ordinary CarPlay support alone does not make a car compatible with Ultra.
What Apple CarPlay Ultra changes
Standard CarPlay brings selected iPhone apps and functions to a vehicle’s infotainment display. CarPlay Ultra is a deeper automaker integration intended to connect the center display with the instrument cluster and other driver-facing screens. Apple says those displays can show iPhone maps and media alongside vehicle information such as speed, engine revs, fuel level, temperature, driver-assistance information, and tire pressure. What appears depends on the vehicle and the information its maker makes available. Apple’s launch announcement describes the feature set.
Ultra can also bring radio, climate, and vehicle-specific settings into onscreen controls. Depending on the car, drivers can use the touchscreen, physical controls, or Siri. iPhone-powered widgets can be placed on the vehicle’s screen or gauge cluster. Apple’s CarPlay developer documentation says Ultra is wireless, appears when the vehicle displays turn on and the driver’s iPhone is present, and leaves driving features powered by the vehicle’s built-in system.
How the custom design fits the car
CarPlay Ultra is not just a single Apple-designed skin stretched across every car. Apple says it works with each automaker’s design team on themes, then lets drivers choose from curated looks and personalize colors and wallpapers. The aim is to carry a car’s visual identity across its screens while still presenting iPhone-powered features.

Aston Martin says its bespoke theme was designed with Apple and spans both the center touchscreen and driver instrument cluster. The company describes the result as personalized while retaining Aston Martin’s identity. That illustrates the luxury-oriented design promise, but the exact themes and customization available will depend on the automaker and vehicle. Aston Martin’s announcement outlines its implementation.
Which cars have CarPlay Ultra?
Aston Martin was the first manufacturer to deliver CarPlay Ultra. At launch, Apple said the system was available with new Aston Martin orders in the United States and Canada, with compatible existing vehicles expected to receive a dealer software update. Aston Martin named the DBX, Vantage, DB12, and Vanquish as the initial range in those markets and said Ultra was standard on new orders there.

Aston Martin also announced a plan to expand availability to global markets within 12 months of its launch announcement. That was a stated rollout plan, not confirmation that every market or vehicle now has support. Check with Aston Martin or a local dealer for current country, model-year, hardware, and update availability before relying on it.
Apple said Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis were among the automakers newly committed to working toward Ultra support; that commitment is not the same as a confirmed supported model or launch date. Apple’s directory of more than 800 CarPlay-compatible models covers CarPlay generally, not guaranteed Ultra compatibility. Ultra depends on automaker integration and the appropriate next-generation infotainment hardware.

Can an existing CarPlay car get Ultra?
Not simply because it already runs CarPlay. Ultra requires compatible vehicle hardware and software integration by the automaker. Apple and Aston Martin announced dealer software updates for compatible existing Aston Martin vehicles, but that does not establish an upgrade path for other makes or for every older Aston Martin. Ask the automaker or dealer to confirm compatibility for the exact vehicle, model year, market, and infotainment system. A generic aftermarket CarPlay adapter should not be assumed to add Ultra.

Apple’s stated phone requirement is an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later. You also need a vehicle that specifically supports CarPlay Ultra; having a compatible iPhone or conventional CarPlay is not sufficient on its own. Before buying or updating a phone, confirm that the vehicle itself is supported in your market.

What to check before choosing a vehicle
Because support is tied to the vehicle rather than just the phone, verify the details for the specific car you are considering:

- Availability: Confirm the model, model year, trim, country, and infotainment hardware are explicitly supported—not merely listed as CarPlay-compatible.
- Displays and functions: Ask which screens Ultra uses and which gauges, vehicle information, radio, climate, and settings are integrated.
- Personalization: Check the available themes, colors, and wallpaper options for that automaker.
- Existing-car updates: If you own the vehicle, get confirmation from the automaker or dealer about eligibility and the update method.
- Phone compatibility: Confirm you have an iPhone 12 or later with iOS 18.5 or later.
