Andrea Kimi Antonelli called his Azerbaijan Grand Prix “probably the worst weekend” of his season, but he still recovered from a qualifying crash and a 16th-place start to finish fifth. Heading into the relocated Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang, his task was to turn that difficult weekend into a steadier performance on an abrasive circuit where rain was another potential variable.
Why Antonelli called Baku his worst weekend
Antonelli’s description was about how the weekend went for him, not a claim that he failed to score. He crashed in the first qualifying segment, started 16th, then worked his way up to fifth on Sunday, according to Formula 1’s October 1 report.

He said the experience taught him to stay controlled when confidence was low, even if that meant driving below the limit and accepting a result that might otherwise feel unsatisfying. “I didn’t really like driving under the limit. I felt a bit too slow. But I think the learning was that sometimes you have to accept these kinds of situations,” he said, as reported by Reuters/CNA.

What was at stake in Malaysia
Before the Sepang event, Mercedes teammate George Russell’s Azerbaijan win had reduced Antonelli’s reported championship lead to 66 points. That is the pre-Malaysia standings picture, not a current-season update. Antonelli said his aim was to do everything in his power to earn the best result and described Russell as carrying momentum after Baku; these were pre-race comments, not a forecast of what would happen in Malaysia.

Mercedes also brought W17 upgrades to Sepang. Antonelli expected the package to add grip and downforce, while noting that its effect on the car’s balance remained to be seen. Those expectations did not by themselves establish that the upgrades improved performance.
Why the Bahrain Grand Prix was held at Sepang
The race took place at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, but its event name was the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix. The Bahrain race was relocated from Sakhir amid regional tensions and disruption associated with the Iran war, with Sepang serving as the replacement venue, according to The Associated Press report carried by The Washington Post and Reuters/CNA. Sepang’s previous Formula 1 race had been in 2017, the AP reported.

Sepang’s surface and weather added uncertainty
Drivers and teams were watching two variables: the circuit’s rough, abrasive surface and the possibility of rain. Pirelli warned teams to expect punishing conditions and described Sepang’s surface as relatively abrasive, with roughness comparable to Bahrain, according to Reuters/CNA.
Antonelli said Sepang could offer a useful wet-weather test for the 2026 cars. He believed the porous, rough surface might help reduce standing water in ordinary rain, but that assessment is not a guarantee against aquaplaning or a substitute for an updated forecast. Weather can change quickly at the circuit.

Friday offered only a snapshot: both practice sessions were dry despite forecasts of heavy rain, and Antonelli finished fifth in one and eighth in the other, AP reported. Those session results and conditions do not establish what the weather or competitive order would be later in the weekend.

Antonelli’s Baku recovery showed that a poor qualifying session did not prevent him from reaching the top five, but Sepang posed a different test. The useful measures were whether he could put together a clean qualifying session, manage race pace and decisions over a demanding surface, and adapt if conditions turned wet. The pre-race reports established neither how he nor Russell would perform there nor whether Mercedes’ upgrades would deliver the expected gains.
