No. The available reports do not establish that Anthony Joshua’s injuries worsened or were worse than first thought. A representative said on December 30, 2025, that his injuries had not worsened; Nigerian state authorities later said he was fit to recuperate at home. Those reports are historical, however: they do not establish his medical condition as of October 7, 2026.
What was confirmed after the crash?
On December 29, 2025, Matchroom Boxing and 258 BXG said Joshua had been injured in a road traffic accident in Lagos, Nigeria, and taken to hospital for checks and treatment. Their statement described him as stable under observation. It also confirmed the deaths of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, Joshua’s close friends and team members. Read the joint statement.

Did a later update say his injuries had worsened?
No. ESPN reported on December 30 that a representative said Joshua had no additional physical issues and that his injuries had not worsened. This was an update attributed to a representative, not a published medical report. ESPN’s report.

ITV reported the same day that a joint statement from Ogun and Lagos state authorities described the hospitalized patients as stable and said emergency intervention was not required at that time. ITV also quoted Ogun State police describing Joshua’s injuries as minor. These descriptions do not amount to a detailed account of his injuries. ITV’s report.
What happened after his hospital stay?
ABC News Australia reported on January 1, 2026, that Joshua had been discharged after Ogun and Lagos state authorities deemed him clinically fit to recuperate at home. Does gym footage show he had fully recovered?
No. Sky News reported on January 16, 2026, that Joshua had shared footage of himself hitting pads. Promoter Eddie Hearn said it was too early to discuss a return to the ring and that Joshua should be given time. Training footage shows activity; by itself, it does not establish full recovery, medical clearance or a fight date. Hearn said: “The future of Anthony Joshua will be told by Anthony Joshua. On the evidence available in these dated reports, the claim that his injuries were “worse than first thought” is unsupported: the updates describe a stable condition, say the injuries had not worsened, and later report discharge to recuperate at home.
