The relevant beta builds—12.9.1437 and 12.9.1438—carry package dates from September 2024. Their published changelog says only “bug fixes and other improvements,” with no verified major consumer feature.
For most drivers, the best choice is the current stable Google Play version or the current official beta. Consider Android Auto 12.9 only for a specific compatibility test, rollback, or legacy-device reason.
Is Android Auto 12.9 beta real?
Yes. Android Auto 12.9 was a genuine Google release family. The documented builds include 12.9.1437, identified as 12.9.143734-release.daily, and 12.9.1438, identified as 12.9.143804-release.daily.
The dates can be misleading. APKMirror pages show later upload or archive activity, but the package metadata dates the builds to September 15 and September 18, 2024, respectively. An archive upload date does not mean Google launched a new Android Auto 12.9 update in 2026.

What was new in Android Auto 12.9?
The verified changelog for both builds is simply “bug fixes and other improvements.” No authoritative release note in the available documentation ties Android Auto 12.9 to a specific new dashboard, Gemini integration, Maps speedometer, immersive navigation, video playback, or redesigned control system.
Those features may belong to other Android Auto releases, Google Maps or Waze updates, account experiments, or server-side rollouts. Google’s 2026 announcement discusses newer Android-in-the-car experiences—including refreshed visuals, immersive navigation, video while parked, and Gemini-related improvements—but it does not establish that those features came from Android Auto 12.9. Android Auto 12.9 version details
| Build | Package identifier | Package date | Listed variant | Changelog |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12.9.1437 | 12.9.143734-release.daily |
September 15, 2024 | arm64-v8a, Android 8.0+, nodpi | Bug fixes and other improvements |
| 12.9.1438 | 12.9.143804-release.daily |
September 18, 2024 | arm64-v8a, Android 8.0+, nodpi | Bug fixes and other improvements |
arm64-v8a refers to a common 64-bit ARM phone architecture. Android 8.0+ is the minimum declared by the listed APK variant, not a promise that every Android Auto feature or vehicle will work. nodpi means the package is not tied to a particular screen-density bucket.
Later Android Auto release lines, including 16.x and 17.x, are listed in 2026. That is why 12.9 should be treated as an older archive rather than the latest beta. View a later 17.x release listing.
Safest way to download the Android Auto beta
Use Google Play’s official beta program whenever it is available for your account. Google warns that beta software can be less stable and that some features may not work correctly.
- Open Google’s Android Auto beta-testing page.
- Select Become a tester.
- Open the Android Auto listing in the Google Play Store.
- Install the beta update when Google Play makes it available.
- Restart the phone and reconnect the vehicle after updating.
Beta availability may not be immediate. If no beta is offered, your phone may continue receiving the regular version until Google publishes another test build. Google also states that only one Android Auto version can be installed on a phone at a time.

Download over Wi-Fi, confirm that you are signed into the Google account used on the phone, and avoid switching to a beta immediately before a long or important drive.
Should you sideload Android Auto 12.9?
Sideloading is possible, but it should be a last resort. It makes sense only if the official beta is unavailable and you have a specific reason to test an older build.
- Use a reputable archive that provides signature and variant information.
- Check the Android version and CPU architecture before downloading.
- Determine whether the download is a standard APK or a split APK bundle requiring a compatible installer.
- Do not use modified, “premium unlocked,” or unknown APK packages.
- Back up important data and record your current Android Auto version first.
- Stop if Android reports a signature or package conflict; do not try random variants.
Android may require you to allow the browser or file manager to install unknown apps. Re-enable that permission only when necessary, and inspect any warning before proceeding. A correctly Google-signed package can still be the wrong build for your phone or can introduce connection problems.
Android Auto compatibility requirements
Google’s Play listing broadly states that Android Auto requires an Android phone running Android 6.0 or higher and an active data connection. Google’s compatibility guidance separately says Android 9.0 or higher is required for most wired connections. Check the Play Store listing and Google’s Android Auto compatibility guidance.

Your phone’s Android version is only one part of the requirement. The vehicle or aftermarket receiver must support Android Auto, and wireless operation requires compatible hardware on both sides. A charge-only USB port, unsupported head unit, poor cable, or incompatible wireless adapter cannot be fixed by installing an older APK.
Android Auto is also different from Android Automotive OS. Android Auto runs from a compatible phone on a vehicle display; Android Automotive OS is built into some vehicles. An Android Auto 12.9 APK is not an update for Android Automotive OS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a feature may not appear after updating
Installing an app version does not guarantee that every feature associated with that version will appear. Google can enable features gradually or control them through its servers. Availability can also depend on:
- Your country or region.
- Your Google account or an experiment.
- Google Maps, Waze, Google, or Gemini versions.
- The vehicle’s display and head-unit hardware.
- Wireless-versus-wired compatibility.
For example, reports about Google Maps’ Android Auto speedometer described availability for some beta users and possible server-side control. Updating the Android Auto APK alone did not guarantee access. That feature should not be presented as an Android Auto 12.9 feature. See the reported rollout details.

What to do if Android Auto stops working
If Android Auto does not appear on the car display
- Confirm Android Auto is enabled in the vehicle’s infotainment settings.
- Unlock the phone during first-time setup and approve requested permissions.
- For wired use, try a short, high-quality USB data cable and the vehicle’s correct USB port.
- Restart the phone and head unit.
- Remove the vehicle from Android Auto’s previously connected cars list, then pair it again.
- Check Google Play Services, Google Maps, and Android Auto for updates.
If the APK will not install
Common causes include an incompatible architecture, an Android version below the package requirement, a split APK opened without the proper installer, insufficient storage, disabled unknown-app permission, a corrupt download, or a conflicting signature.
Restore the Play Store version or uninstall the sideloaded update where your phone offers an uninstall updates option. Android Auto may be integrated into system software, so the exact downgrade controls vary by manufacturer and Android edition. Reboot the phone afterward, reconnect the car, and approve permissions again.
If the beta causes crashes or wireless problems
Leave the beta and return to the stable Google Play channel. To opt out, return to Google’s Android Auto beta page, select Leave the program, then install or update to the regular release when it becomes available. Leaving does not necessarily downgrade the app instantly; some phones may need to wait for the stable build or expose a manufacturer-specific uninstall-updates control.
Google also recommends submitting feedback. When safe and stationary, hold the Android Auto status area for several seconds and use the notification that appears to complete the report. Do not troubleshoot or file a report while driving.
Which Android Auto version should you use?
| Your situation | Best choice |
|---|---|
| You rely on Android Auto for daily commuting or unfamiliar navigation. | Current stable Google Play release |
| You want early fixes and can tolerate regressions. | Current official Google Play beta |
| You need to test a particular older phone/car combination. | Android Auto 12.9, only if the specific build is necessary |
| You are trying to fix a broken cable, unsupported head unit, or vehicle setting. | Fix the hardware or configuration; changing the APK is unlikely to help |
Wireless adapters such as AAWireless and the Motorola MA1 can convert a compatible wired Android Auto system to wireless operation. They are optional hardware, not a requirement for Android Auto 12.9, and they cannot add Android Auto to an unsupported car or cure an underlying beta-software problem. Check compatibility before buying.
Verdict
Android Auto 12.9 beta exists, but it is an older 2024-era release with a generic bug-fix changelog. In 2026, most drivers should install the current stable Google Play build, while enthusiasts who accept instability should use Google’s current official beta. Sideload Android Auto 12.9 only when you have a clearly defined testing or rollback reason and understand the recovery steps.
