What are the most iconic Alpina BMW models? There is no official top-five ranking, but these five tell the story well: early turbocharged B7s, the E34 B10 Bi-Turbo, the modern B7 flagship and a B6 GT3 collectible that represents Alpina’s racing identity. They also show why Alpina was more than a styling package: the company developed BMW-based cars with its own engineering and character.
From BMW tuning to a car marque
Alpina began on 1 January 1965 and built its early reputation through BMW tuning and motorsport. It began manufacturing passenger cars based on BMW AG products in 1978 and was registered as an official automotive manufacturer in 1983, according to BMW Group’s 2022 announcement. That history matters: the cars below came from a business that developed BMW-based vehicles, rather than simply adding a trim package.
The five selections are an editorial guide, not a definitive ranking. They trace a progression from early turbo models to a later luxury performance flagship, with a racing collectible included to represent a different part of Alpina’s story.
1. BMW ALPINA B7 Turbo (E12): an early turbo-era statement
Alpina’s official history identifies the E12 B7 Turbo as based on the BMW 528i. It is a useful starting point for understanding the marque’s approach: take a BMW platform and develop it into a distinct car. The available record establishes the model identity and base vehicle, but not a sufficiently verified specification or production total to quote here.

2. BMW ALPINA B7 Turbo Coupé (E24): the same idea in a different shape
The E24 B7 Turbo Coupé extended the B7 name into a coupe. Alpina’s model-history record identifies it as based on the BMW 630CSi. That makes it a useful contrast with the E12 sedan: a shared turbo-era identity expressed through a different BMW body style. Exact output and production figures are not included because they are not established by the available record.
3. BMW ALPINA B10 Bi-Turbo (E34): the best-documented classic
The E34 B10 Bi-Turbo is one of the clearest examples of Alpina’s independent development work. Alpina lists it as based on the BMW 535i, with production running from August 1989 to March 1994. Its official technical data gives a 3,430 cc engine producing 265 kW (360 hp) and 520 Nm.

Alpina’s published figures for the model are 0–100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and a top speed above 290 km/h. These are manufacturer figures, not an independent test. The combination of a BMW sedan base and unusually strong performance made the B10 Bi-Turbo an emblematic expression of the period’s fast, long-distance touring ideal.
4. BMW ALPINA B7 (2019 update): a modern flagship formula
The later B7 carried the flagship name into a luxury-sedan context. In its 2021 brochure for the 2019-updated model, Alpina specified a 4.4-liter V8 Bi-Turbo producing 447 kW (608 hp) and 800 Nm. The brochure gives 0–100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and a maximum speed of 330 km/h. These are Alpina’s published specifications for that configuration, not independent test results.

The B7’s appeal was not just its output. Alpina paired performance with comfort, individual interior finishes and restrained details that distinguished the car without making its identity depend on conspicuous styling. The early E12 and modern B7 share a name and a broad performance-luxury idea, not mechanical continuity.
5. BMW ALPINA B6 GT3: a racing identity in collectible form
Alpina’s archive records a B6 GT3 Red Bull Daytona 2015 model car offered in the company shop in May 2016. It provides a way to include Alpina’s racing story alongside its road cars, but the record is specifically for a physical model car—not a road-going B6 GT3 specification or evidence of current stock. It also does not establish production quantity or a present-day retail listing.

What changed when BMW took over the Alpina name?
In March 2022, BMW announced an agreement to acquire Alpina’s brand rights, while stating it would not acquire company shares. The announcement said the existing cooperation and vehicle program would continue through the end of 2025, and that the legacy parts and accessories business would continue at Buchloe. BMW board member Pieter Nota described the rationale: “Acquiring the trademark rights will allow us to shape the long-term course of this brand steeped in tradition.” The details are in BMW Group’s announcement of 10 March 2022.
The brand-rights transfer took effect on 1 January 2026, when BMW Group launched BMW ALPINA as an exclusive standalone brand under its umbrella. This is a new chapter for the name; the historic cars discussed above belong to the independent Alpina/Bovensiepen business and its cooperation with BMW. In an article dated 13 August 2026, BMW Group said the first new BMW ALPINA model was due in 2027 and would be inspired by the BMW 7 Series. That is a forward-looking company statement, and the timing may change. See BMW Group’s January 2026 launch announcement and its August 2026 brand article.
