Ford has recalled approximately 499,129 SUVs in the United States because a rear brake jounce hose may rupture and leak brake fluid. The recall covers certain 2015–2018 Ford Edge and 2016–2018 Lincoln MKX vehicles. A leaking hose can increase brake-pedal travel and stopping distance, raising the risk of a crash.
The recall is Ford campaign 25S87 and NHTSA campaign 25V544. If you own one of these SUVs, check its 17-character VIN and contact an authorized Ford or Lincoln dealer. Model-year coverage alone does not prove that a particular vehicle is included.
Which Ford SUVs are affected?
| Brand | Model years | Estimated U.S. population | Recall campaign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Edge | 2015–2018 | Approximately 499,129 vehicles | Ford 25S87 NHTSA 25V544 |
| Lincoln MKX | 2016–2018 |
This is a U.S. recall population. A separate Canadian population of 52,547 vehicles has been reported, but Canadian owners should use Ford Canada and the applicable Canadian recall system rather than assuming that U.S. procedures or vehicle counts apply unchanged.
Not every Edge or MKX from the listed model years is necessarily affected. A VIN search is required to determine whether a specific vehicle has an unrepaired recall.

What is the brake-fluid leak problem?
The recalled part is the rear brake jounce hose. It is a flexible hydraulic brake hose that accommodates movement between the vehicle’s suspension and brake assembly. Ford reported that the affected hoses may rupture prematurely.
If a hose ruptures, brake fluid can escape from the hydraulic system. The resulting loss of fluid or hydraulic pressure may cause the brake pedal to travel farther than normal and may increase stopping distance. That does not mean every affected vehicle will suddenly lose all braking ability, but it can make the vehicle harder to stop and increase crash risk.
Symptoms owners should take seriously
Potential warning signs include:
- A brake pedal that feels softer than usual or travels farther toward the floor
- Stopping distances that are longer than expected
- A red brake-fluid or brake-system warning light
- Visible brake fluid near a rear wheel or on the roadway
The available investigation records describe some reports in which drivers experienced a pedal moving toward the floor, increased stopping distance, or brake fluid near the rear tires or on the road. Some consumers also reported no warning before a braking event. Ford’s recall filing, by contrast, described a progressive leak and a red warning if fluid in the reservoir fell to a specified level. Those reports do not establish that every vehicle will show the same warning pattern.
What owners should do now
- Locate the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. It is commonly found on the driver-side dashboard at the base of the windshield, on the driver-side door-jamb label, and in vehicle documents.
- Use the official NHTSA recall lookup or Ford’s recall system. A VIN search identifies unrepaired recalls associated with an individual vehicle; searching only by make, model, and year is not enough.
- Contact an authorized Ford or Lincoln dealer. Ask the service department to check campaign 25S87, also identified by NHTSA as 25V544, and confirm whether the remedy and required parts are available for that VIN.
- Do not assume that a previous brake-hose repair closed this recall. The 2025 campaign concerns the rear brake jounce hoses, while an earlier recall involved front brake hoses.
Recall repairs are performed without charge through the manufacturer’s authorized repair network. Owners should confirm appointment and parts availability directly with Ford or a dealer because recall status and remedy availability can vary by VIN and location.

Should you drive the vehicle?
If the brake pedal feels soft or travels farther than it normally does, a brake warning light is illuminated, or fluid is visible near a rear wheel, avoid normal driving and arrange professional assistance. Contact a Ford or Lincoln dealer for instructions and ask about towing or other safe transport options. Do not continue driving a vehicle with a suspected hydraulic-brake problem simply because it still stops.
The recall documents include a “Do Not Drive” and “Park Outside” advisory in the recall schedule data. Whether that instruction applies to a particular vehicle should be confirmed through the VIN-specific recall notice and dealer. If the vehicle is parked outside, keep it away from structures and other vehicles until a professional provides direction, particularly if there is evidence of a brake-fluid leak.
What is known about the repair—and what is not?
The initial NHTSA acknowledgment said the remedy was under development. Ford’s Part 573 filing described a free replacement remedy, while later indexed recall summaries described an anticipated remedy-letter timing that did not consistently match the timing in the original filing.
The available records include an initial owner-letter window beginning September 8, 2025, a planned remedy-owner-notification window of April 1–3, 2026 in the Part 573 material, and a later indexed reference to anticipated letters in August 2026. Because these dates conflict, they should not be treated as proof that every affected vehicle could be repaired on a particular date.

- Precise replacement - cylinder housing is constructed to match the casting material of the original part and ensure similar performance
- Durable design - all rubber components are made of high-quality EPDM compound for resistance to glycol-based brake fluid
- 100% new - made entirely of new materials, not remanufactured, to ensure highest quality and safety
- Strict specifications - made to meet rigorous SAE International standards
- Ensure fit - to make sure this part fits your exact vehicle, input your make, model and trim level into the garage tool
The safest practical conclusion is that Ford has identified a free dealer remedy involving inspection and possible replacement or adjustment of the rear brake jounce hoses, but owners should confirm the current remedy status and parts availability for their own VIN with Ford or an authorized dealer. Do not treat an aftermarket brake-hose listing as evidence that the recall has been completed.
Why an aftermarket brake hose is not a recall remedy
A marketplace listing for a “Ford Edge brake hose” or similar part may appear to match the vehicle, but a listing alone does not establish:
- That the part fits the exact vehicle configuration
- That it is the part specified by Ford for campaign 25S87
- That it meets the required hydraulic-brake and durability specifications
- That it has been installed using Ford’s recall procedure
- That the vehicle’s official recall record has been closed
The manufacturer’s free recall repair should take priority. A replacement part purchased independently is not a substitute for confirming the recall with Ford or Lincoln. Qualified repair professionals may research compatible components for a vehicle outside the recall process, but owners should not use a generic part purchase as proof that the safety campaign has been addressed.
How the investigation led to the recall
NHTSA opened Preliminary Evaluation PE24-027 on October 3, 2024, after receiving reports involving loss of braking ability in 2015–2017 Ford Edge vehicles. The agency’s information request referenced 36 reports at that stage and examined allegations involving increased stopping distance and rear brake-hose failure.
Rank #4
- New low viscosity formulation, faster response at lower temperatures
- Recommended for new ABS brake systems with stability control
- Check brake fluid reservoir cap or master cylinder reservoir, owner guide and/or workshop manual for proper brake fluid usage
- Required for certain vehicles beginning in 2012-2013 model years
- Meets FMVSS DOT-4 and ISO4925 Class-6 standards
The investigation record included reports of brake pedals traveling toward the floorboard, unexpectedly long stopping distances, and brake fluid around rear tires or on the roadway. NHTSA’s summary said Ford had not fully determined the root cause of the hose defect at that point.
Ford reported that the hoses entered production on June 25, 2014, and were removed from production on December 17, 2017. Ford also reported that a later change from PVA to PET braid material was associated with a significantly reduced repair rate.
NHTSA closed the preliminary evaluation after Ford submitted the recall, while reserving the right to take additional action if future circumstances warrant. Ford’s Part 573 filing stated that, as of the filing, it was not aware of any accident or injury related to the concern. That filing statement should not be read as a guarantee that no later incidents have occurred.
This is separate from the earlier front-brake-hose recall
Some Edge and MKX vehicles were also associated with an earlier front-brake-hose recall, NHTSA 20V469 and Ford campaign 20S42. That earlier campaign involved the front brake hoses.

The 2025 campaign, 25S87/25V544, concerns the rear brake jounce hoses. An owner who completed the earlier front-hose repair may still have an open rear-hose recall. The only reliable way to determine the current status is a VIN-specific check.
Quick owner checklist
- Check the VIN rather than relying only on the model year.
- Ask Ford or Lincoln specifically about 25S87/NHTSA 25V544.
- Confirm whether the remedy is available before arranging an appointment.
- Do not drive normally if the pedal is soft, the pedal travels unusually far, a brake warning light is on, or fluid is visible.
- Do not assume the earlier 20S42 front-hose recall addressed this rear-hose campaign.
- Do not use an aftermarket hose purchase as proof that the recall is complete.
- Keep documentation showing the recall repair was performed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Ford SUVs are included in the brake-hose recall?
The U.S. recall population is approximately 499,129 vehicles. It covers certain 2015–2018 Ford Edge SUVs and 2016–2018 Lincoln MKX SUVs.

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I check whether my Edge or MKX is affected by the model year?
No. Model-year coverage is only a preliminary guide. Use the vehicle’s 17-character VIN through the official NHTSA or Ford recall lookup and confirm the result with an authorized Ford or Lincoln dealer.
Is the repair free?
Recall repairs are intended to be performed without charge through the manufacturer’s authorized repair network. Confirm the current remedy, parts availability, and appointment status for your VIN with Ford or a dealer.
Does the older Ford front-brake-hose recall cover this problem?
No. The earlier 20V469/20S42 campaign involved front brake hoses. The 2025 recall concerns rear brake jounce hoses, so a vehicle repaired under the earlier campaign may still have this separate open recall.
The Bottom Line
If you own a 2015–2018 Ford Edge or 2016–2018 Lincoln MKX, check the VIN for Ford campaign 25S87/NHTSA 25V544 and arrange the free authorized repair. A soft or unusually long-traveling brake pedal, a brake warning light, or visible fluid near a rear wheel warrants avoiding normal driving and seeking professional assistance. Do not assume a previous front-hose repair or an aftermarket replacement part resolves this rear-hose recall.
