Automotive reporting and a specialist seller describe a Volkswagen W10 experimental engine installed in a BMW E39 M5, but the sources available do not include an official Volkswagen confirmation. The seller lists the engine as a 5.0-litre unit producing 480 hp and 592 Nm; those figures are seller-reported, not verified Volkswagen specifications.
What is the Volkswagen W10 prototype?
The W10 is described in automotive coverage and a specialist seller listing as an experimental ten-cylinder Volkswagen engine fitted to a BMW E39 M5. That pairing is the story’s defining oddity: a reported Volkswagen prototype in a performance sedan from a rival automaker. The Drive reported the installation and discussed apparent similarities in engine castings, but noted that Volkswagen had not issued an official statement confirming the project: The Drive’s report.
GDM Motors describes the car as a unique W10-powered E39 M5. Its listing is evidence of how the vehicle is presented by the seller, not an official Volkswagen account: GDM Motors’ listing.
What are the reported specifications?
GDM Motors’ undated listing, accessed in 2026, gives the W10 a 5.0-litre displacement, 480 hp and 592 Nm of torque. Volkswagen has not confirmed those figures in the sources available, so they should be treated as seller-reported details rather than factory specifications.

What is documented about Volkswagen’s other W engines?
Volkswagen’s production W12 provides relevant context, but it does not establish the W10’s development path. In a 2022 retrospective on the Phaeton, Volkswagen described the W12 as a compact W-layout built from two V6 engines and rated it at six litres, 309 kW (420 PS): Volkswagen Newsroom’s Phaeton retrospective.
The same retrospective documents the Phaeton V10 TDI as a diesel producing 230 kW (313 PS) and 750 Nm. It is a production-engine point of comparison, not evidence that the W10 shared its fuel type, design lineage or development program.

Was Ferdinand Piëch involved?
Secondary reporting and the seller’s description associate Ferdinand Piëch with the car, including claims that he commissioned or personally used it. The cited sources do not provide an official Volkswagen record establishing either claim. They should therefore be treated as reported context, not confirmed facts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why was the engine put in a BMW, and what happened to the project?
The available sources do not establish Volkswagen’s motive for using a BMW E39 M5 as the host car, the project’s full development chronology, or why the work ended. They also do not establish a direct line from the W10 to Volkswagen’s later production W12 or W16 engines. Volkswagen’s published account of its W-layout production engine and the group’s earlier Audi history do not fill those gaps: Volkswagen’s Phaeton history and Volkswagen Group’s Audi history.
