But it is not one clear-cut proposition: the UK MY26 range spans a £29,000 hybrid and a £40,800, 280hp electric Veloce. The right choice depends on whether you value the Junior’s character enough to pay for it—and whether the powertrain fits your use.
What is the Alfa Romeo Junior, and how much does it cost?
The Junior is a small Alfa Romeo offered in the UK as either the Ibrida, a mild-hybrid petrol model, or the Elettrica, a battery-electric car. Alfa Romeo’s MY26 UK announcement lists prices from £29,000 for the 145hp Ibrida to £40,800 for the 280hp Elettrica Veloce. The announced Elettrica prices include a £1,500 Alfa Romeo EV grant; that detail applies to this UK announcement, not automatically to other markets or offers.

These are announcement prices, not a live quote. Check the current UK configurator and confirm grant eligibility, specification and on-the-road price before ordering. The manufacturer says the Junior has passed 50,000 global orders, but that order milestone does not establish whether it represents good value for an individual buyer.

Which Junior powertrain fits your driving?
Ibrida: petrol convenience, with economy to check carefully
The Ibrida is the lower-cost route into the range and avoids the need to plan charging. It may suit drivers without convenient home charging or those who regularly make longer journeys. Its official economy figure should not be mistaken for a typical result: Auto Express recorded 37.2mpg in its UK-road test, compared with the stated official 58.9mpg. That is one publication’s test, not a prediction for every driver. Auto Express also judged the hybrid less impressive to drive than the electric versions.
Auto Express’s Junior review and test provides the basis for both its economy result and driving assessment. Your fuel use will depend on route, traffic, weather and driving style.

Elettrica: assess range against your routine and charging access
The standard 156hp Elettrica is a different proposition from the 280hp Veloce. Alfa Romeo UK lists a 54 kWh gross, 51 kWh net battery and states a range of 252–257 miles WLTP combined on its product page. The official technical list gives 247–255 km for the 156hp version, while the 280hp Veloce is listed at 200–207 km. Because these are not identical figures or necessarily identical trim specifications, use the figure for the exact car you are considering and do not treat either as guaranteed real-world range.

Alfa Romeo states that the Elettrica can charge from 20% to 80% in about 27 minutes on a 100 kW DC charger. It also gives about 5 hours 45 minutes for a full charge from an 11 kW AC wallbox. Those are manufacturer figures under specified charging conditions; actual times depend on the charger, battery state and conditions. The car’s stated 400-litre boot is a practical point in its favour.

Veloce: more power, less stated range
The Veloce’s 280hp output makes it the performance-focused electric Junior, but its official WLTP range is lower than the 156hp Elettrica’s. It also costs £8,400 more than the entry Ibrida on the announced MY26 prices. That premium buys a different performance proposition, not simply a more powerful version with the same stated range. Consider it only if the extra output and Veloce equipment matter enough to justify both the price gap and the range trade-off.
Does the Junior drive well enough to justify its character?
Auto Express describes the electric Juniors as capable of engaging driving, citing their steering, road-holding and playful character. That is an editorial assessment from its review, not a first-hand finding here. The same outlet was less impressed by the Ibrida, so the case for buying a Junior on driving character is strongest with the electric versions.

That distinction matters when weighing the range. The Junior’s styling and badge may be part of its appeal, but the evidence does not show that every version delivers the same driving experience. If you are choosing an Ibrida, judge it as the hybrid it is rather than assuming the electric models’ praise carries across.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Alfa Romeo Junior worth buying?
It can be worth buying if its design and character are priorities and the version suits your driving. The standard Elettrica is the most compelling fit for a buyer who can charge conveniently and wants an electric Junior without paying for Veloce power. The Ibrida lowers the entry price and removes charging logistics, but Auto Express’s 37.2mpg test result is a reason to scrutinise fuel costs rather than relying on the stated 58.9mpg. The Veloce makes sense only for someone who specifically wants its 280hp performance and accepts its higher price and lower stated WLTP range.
There is not enough like-for-like current rival pricing and testing here to call another model categorically smarter. Instead, compare the Junior against the cars you would actually buy at the same budget, using the same powertrain type, equipment and ownership needs. The Junior’s appeal is genuine; whether it is the smart choice depends on how much you are willing to pay for that appeal and which compromises you can live with.

- Confirm the current price, grant treatment and eligibility, exact MY26 specification, and delivery availability with a UK Alfa Romeo retailer.
- For an Elettrica, match the range figure to the exact output and version; plan around your likely journeys rather than assuming the WLTP number is achievable in every condition.
- Check whether home or regular public charging is practical for your routine, and ask for the charging equipment and charging conditions relevant to your installation.
- For battery cover, Alfa Romeo UK advertises an eight-year battery warranty, but its page gives inconsistent mileage limits. Verify the exact mileage limit and conditions in the contract for the car you are buying.
- Compare the equipment on the quoted trim with the configurator and written order, rather than relying on a general trim description.
