If you want a used BMW without choosing on price alone, start with two candidates: the 2022 BMW 330i sedan for a lower-priced sport-sedan option, or the 2022–2023 BMW X3 if you need an SUV. Neither is a universal best buy. The right car depends on its mileage, condition, service history, equipment, drivetrain, warranty status, and inspection results—not just its model name or asking price.

The available price and reliability evidence supports a focused shortlist rather than a ranking of every BMW. Use these models as starting points, then compare specific vehicles in your local market.
2022 BMW 330i: the sedan candidate
Kelley Blue Book’s valuation page, accessed in 2026, listed a Fair Purchase Price of about $24,800 for a typical 2022 330i sedan bought from a dealer. KBB says its values vary with mileage, condition, equipment, and location, and are updated weekly; treat the figure as a market snapshot, not a promised selling price. 2022–2023 BMW X3: the SUV alternative
If you need an SUV body style, compare the X3. KBB’s 2023 X3 page identified the sDrive30i as the least expensive listed configuration, at about $30,000 in its Fair Purchase Price snapshot accessed in 2026. It is not a guaranteed transaction price, and the figure should be checked against local listings with similar mileage and equipment. Consumer Reports describes the 2022 X3 as much more reliable than other vehicles of its model year, based on its subscriber survey. The estimates refer to different model years and are not an apples-to-apples test. Compare cars with similar mileage, trim, equipment, drivetrain, and condition in the same area before deciding what is affordable for you.
Why not make the 5 Series or X5 the default?
A used 5 Series or X5 may suit someone who prioritizes more space or comfort, but the available evidence does not provide comparable year-specific used-price and reliability coverage for those models. That is not proof they are poor choices; it means there is not enough here to present them as established value winners.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 pages expect the new 3 Series, X3, and 5 Series to have about average reliability relative to new cars. For context on depreciation, BMW’s current U.S. page lists the 2026 330i sedan at a starting MSRP of $48,000 and notes that actual dealer prices can differ. Ask for an inspector familiar with BMWs to check diagnostic faults, leaks, tires, brakes, suspension, cooling, and upcoming service needs. What a BMW certified pre-owned warranty does—and does not—tell you
BMW’s CPO process includes a history-report review, inspection, reconditioning, approvals, and a road test using BMW diagnostic equipment. Plan for maintenance, not just the purchase price
There is no established universal annual maintenance-cost figure or complete model-by-model BMW ownership-cost ranking in the available evidence.
