Adjustable hold-downs for short-bed pickups are usually sliding cleats that lock into positions along bed rails. They are not universal: Ford and Toyota offer examples for specific short-bed configurations, but the right kit depends on your truck, bed, and existing accessories. Check exact fitment before buying, then follow the instructions for your truck’s rail system when securing a load.
What an adjustable truck-bed hold-down is
A sliding tie-down cleat travels along a track and locks at selected points, giving you more flexibility than a fixed tie-down location. Some products are complete systems with rails and cleats; others are extra cleats designed to work with rails already installed. Search terms such as “pickup truck bed rail tie down cleats” and “sliding truck-bed tie-down cleats” describe the category, not a guarantee of fit.
Short-bed rail systems are vehicle-specific
Manufacturer examples show that adjustable rail systems are available for some short-bed pickups, but “short bed” alone is not enough to establish compatibility. Confirm the make, model year, cab and bed configuration, existing rail setup, and accessory restrictions before ordering.
| System | Fit and included parts | Manufacturer-stated cleat specification | Important fit notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford F-150 5.5-foot-bed rails and cleats, part LL3Z2655200A | Ford lists two tracks and four cleats for the specified F-150 bed. | Up to 200 pounds per cleat, according to Ford’s current product listing. | Ford lists incompatibility with drop-in bedliners, bed or tonneau covers, and bed ramps. This is not a universal short-bed kit. |
| Toyota Deck Rail System – Short Bed, part PT278-34071 | Toyota’s product listing describes a Toyota-specific short-bed system with four die-cast aluminum cleats. | 220 pounds per cleat; cleat locators are spaced every four inches, according to Toyota Genuine Parts. | Use Toyota’s fit check and confirm bedliner requirements for your trim. |
| Ford Ranger SuperCrew 2024–2026 rail and cleat kit | Ford lists two tracks, four cleats, and mounting hardware for Ranger SuperCrew configurations covered by the listing. | 200 pounds per cleat, according to Ford’s product listing. | Do not extend this fit to every Ranger bed configuration. Ford lists exclusions for certain covers, a bed extender, and pivot storage boxes. |
| Ford Cargo Management System 2-Cleat Kit, part NZ6Z26000A64A | Two additional cleats for a compatible Cargo Management Rail system; not a standalone rail kit. | Not stated in the cited product information. | Ford says the cleats slide into the track ends after the endcaps are removed. Verify that your existing rails are compatible. |
How to check fit before buying
- Identify the exact truck configuration. Record make, model year, cab style, and bed length. Match all of them to the manufacturer’s fitment listing rather than relying on “short bed.”
- Check what is already installed. Determine whether your bed has compatible rails or needs a complete track-and-cleat kit. A supplemental cleat pack will not add rails to a bare bed.
- Review accessory exclusions. Check compatibility with your bedliner, tonneau cover, bed cover, ramps, extender, storage boxes, and other bed accessories. For example, Ford lists several exclusions for its F-150 5.5-foot-bed kit.
- Confirm installation and use instructions. Consult the product listing and the owner’s manual for your truck and rail system. Do not assume that another manufacturer’s locking method or load rating applies.
Lock the cleat and follow the correct load instructions
Move each cleat to the required position and secure it using the rail system’s specified locking method before attaching a strap. Ford’s 2022 owner manual directs users to move the cleat and lock it into a locking position. It gives maximum forces of 276 pounds between directly opposed cleats and 600 pounds between diagonally opposed cleats, and warns that overloading can damage bed walls. Those figures describe the Ford manual’s specified arrangement; they are not a per-cleat rating for every rail system.

Ram’s 2022 manual gives different instructions for its adjustable cleats on an equipped RamBox bed: seat the cleat in a rail detent and tighten it. For that system, the manual specifies a maximum of 250 pounds per cleat and a maximum load angle of 45 degrees above horizontal. These are Ram system instructions, not ratings for other trucks or aftermarket rails. Use the manual for your exact vehicle and equipment, and do not compare these figures as though they were measured under identical conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a complete rail kit or extra cleats
If your bed has no compatible track, look for a complete vehicle-specific rail kit that includes tracks and cleats. If compatible rails are already installed and you need more attachment points, a supplemental cleat kit may be suitable. Check the kit contents and fitment carefully: a set of additional cleats does not replace a rail system, and a complete kit may not work with your existing accessories.
