An adult soapbox kart is a gravity-powered racer, not a motorized go-kart. To build or race one, start by choosing an event: each organizer sets its own eligibility, vehicle specifications, inspection process, and safety requirements. A kit or rule book from one program may not qualify for another.
Can adults race in a soapbox derby?
Yes, some programs allow adult participation. The International Soap Box Derby publishes race resources that include an adult waiver required for adults racing, including exhibition races. Check the organization’s current form and requirements before entering: International Soap Box Derby race resources.
Other adult races may be organized locally and operate under separate rules. For example, Gravity Gran Prix publishes its own rules and states that its event is not affiliated with the All-American Soap Box Derby; that program’s specifications do not necessarily apply to Gravity Gran Prix. Review the rules for the event you intend to enter rather than assuming a familiar derby standard governs it: Gravity Gran Prix rules.
Where can you find adult soapbox derby rules?
Get the current rules and entry requirements from the organizer of the specific event. Ask for the applicable rule book, vehicle specifications, inspection checklist, and safety instructions. The International Soap Box Derby identifies its 2025 Rule Book as its official rules and describes the Racing Commission’s role in rules and build requirements for named youth divisions. Local events can set different requirements. Dunstable’s event information pack, for instance, describes vehicles powered by a push and gravity and offers local guidance on material selection. That guidance applies to its event, not automatically to other races: Dunstable Soap Box Derby information pack.
How do adults build a soapbox kart?
Choose the event first, then build to its rules. Do not treat a youth division’s plans, another town’s rule book, or a kit booklet as a universal adult kart specification.

- Identify the event. Confirm adult eligibility, entry deadlines, and which rules apply to your race.
- Ask about acceptable designs. Check whether the organizer permits kit-based, scratch-built, or both types of vehicles.
- Get the technical requirements in writing. Verify dimensions, permitted materials and propulsion, steering and braking requirements, driver or passenger limits, protective equipment, and inspection criteria.
- Choose a build plan that matches those rules. Use a program’s plans or kit instructions only if the event confirms that the design is eligible.
- Arrange inspection and testing with the organizer. Follow its instructions for inspection, test runs, and incident procedures before bringing the vehicle to the course.
Using an official kit and booklet
The International Soap Box Derby’s Gravity Racing Challenge booklet covers assembly of a specific car kit. It describes supplied hardware, replacement and optional parts, and basic assembly tools. It is a program-specific build resource—not proof that the kit meets another adult event’s requirements. Check eligibility with your chosen organizer before buying or assembling it: Gravity Racing Challenge booklet.
The booklet’s tool list can help you prepare for that assembly, but having the listed tools does not establish that a car is safe, race-ready, or eligible. The booklet does not establish current marketplace availability for the kit.

Building from scratch
A scratch-built vehicle is an option only if the event permits it. Before selecting materials or laying out the chassis, get the organizer’s specifications for dimensions, steering, braking, driver protection, and inspection. The available event guidance does not support one universal design or a fastest-or-safest configuration.
What makes a soapbox kart a gravity racer?
A soapbox kart is designed to travel downhill under gravity rather than by an onboard motor. Whether a starting push is allowed, and how propulsion must be described or controlled, depends on the event: some local rules describe a push followed by gravity, while others may set their own wording and limits. Confirm the permitted start and propulsion rules with the organizer before building or testing.

What safety checks should you make before racing?
Ask the event organizer for its inspection checklist and safety plan before testing. Requirements are event-specific; an example from one race is not a substitute for the rules at another.
- Confirm vehicle inspection criteria and any required pre-race checks.
- Ask what steering, braking, driver protection, and protective equipment are required.
- Verify permitted materials, propulsion, and driver or passenger limits.
- Get instructions for approved test-run conditions and the course.
- Know the event’s emergency, evacuation, and incident procedures.
