A successful ADAS calibration is not simply a scan with no warning lights: it means the procedure required for that vehicle and repair was completed under the manufacturer’s specified conditions, with a documented result. Requirements vary by vehicle, system, market, and work performed, so the current OEM repair information for the VIN—not a universal checklist—should determine what is needed.

When is ADAS calibration required?

Calibration may be required after a repair or change that affects a driver-assistance sensor, its mounting, or the vehicle geometry the system relies on. Examples include work near sensors, sensor removal or replacement, changes to suspension or ride height, and geometry changes. These are reasons to check the applicable OEM procedure, not a universal list of automatic triggers.

Start with the vehicle’s build information and the work performed. I-CAR’s damage-analysis guidance directs technicians to use OEM repair information to identify affected systems and required procedures. Its calibration search matrix is not complete for every production vehicle, so it should not replace current manufacturer information for the specific VIN and market.

Calibration, initialization, aiming, and scanning are distinct operations. The OEM procedure determines which apply; a repairer should not infer that calibration is unnecessary merely because no warning is displayed or a scan reports no diagnostic trouble code.

Does a wheel alignment require an ADAS calibration?

Not in every vehicle or after every alignment. The answer depends on the vehicle’s OEM procedure and the work performed. Some procedures specify alignment or geometry prerequisites, while others may not call for the same steps. Check the current instructions for the VIN rather than assuming either that an alignment always requires calibration or that it never does.

Setup can be decisive. I-CAR’s pre-repair calibration guidance gives an example in which the vehicle must be in a wheel-alignment bay and level. That example illustrates why a generic setup assumption is unsafe; it does not establish a requirement for every vehicle.

What kind of calibration does the vehicle need?

The prescribed method is vehicle- and system-specific. I-CAR’s collision repair process and New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) guidance describe static calibration, dynamic calibration, or a combination of both.

  • Dynamic: The procedure requires a road drive under the manufacturer’s stated conditions.
  • Combined: Both stationary and road-based steps are required when the OEM procedure calls for them.

Do not substitute one method for another based on convenience or a tool’s available menu. Before work begins, confirm the procedure, required equipment, workspace conditions, vehicle position, and any road-test parameters.

What prerequisites can make or break the result?

Before calibration, confirm the requirements in the applicable procedure. Depending on the vehicle and system, these can include:

  • A suitable, level work area and the specified vehicle position.
  • Alignment, ride height, or other geometry conditions.
  • Sensor and mounting-point condition.
  • Correct targets, aiming equipment, and scan tools.
  • Required system enablement or disablement steps.
  • Road conditions and other parameters for a dynamic procedure.

I-CAR cautions that some systems require steps to enable or disable functions and that a disabled system may not be calibratable. Performing a procedure with the wrong setup can therefore prevent completion or undermine the result, even if a scan tool appears to finish its routine.

Tool coverage also varies. I-CAR warns that aftermarket scan tools may not support the latest model years or communicate with every module, and that an OEM may not have tested or approved a particular aftermarket tool. A tool’s general ADAS capability is not proof that it supports the exact vehicle, module, and procedure.

Why a clean scan or no warning light is not enough

A scan and a calibration answer different questions. I-CAR’s collision diagnostic process treats pre-repair scanning, required calibration or initialization, and post-repair scanning as separate steps. A clean scan does not replace a calibration required by the OEM procedure.

Focal ADAS reproduces a Ford position statement saying that certain ADAS sensors may not immediately trigger a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) if misaligned. This is secondary-source reporting, not a substitute for the current Ford statement applicable to a specific vehicle and repair. More broadly, the absence of a warning or DTC should not be used to decide that no required calibration was needed.

What should happen before and after the calibration?

I-CAR’s collision repair diagnostics process provides a useful sequence, subject to the applicable OEM instructions:

  1. Before repair: Perform the required pre-repair scan and record relevant DTCs and diagnostic information.
  2. Identify the procedure: Use the vehicle’s build information and current OEM repair information to identify affected systems and required calibration, initialization, or aiming.
  3. Meet the prerequisites: Prepare the vehicle, work area, tools, targets, and any system settings as specified by the procedure.
  4. Perform the required steps: Complete the prescribed static, dynamic, or combined procedure, including any specified road drive.
  5. After repair: Perform the required post-repair scan and review the results. If related codes return, I-CAR’s process directs the technician to follow the OEM diagnostic process.

The scan records and calibration record should be interpreted together with the procedure performed; one does not stand in for the other.

  • The vehicle-specific OEM procedure reference or equivalent documentation.
  • The calibration type performed and the systems or components involved.
  • The successful result or completion record.
  • Pre-repair and post-repair scan results, including relevant codes or diagnostic data.
  • Photographs of the relevant component or work, where appropriate.

ICBC’s glass-claim policy lists component photographs, calibration type, successful results, and the supporting OEM or equivalent repair procedure among records for covered operations. That is an ICBC claims-context example, not a universal legal rule or insurer requirement.

How to assess an ADAS calibration service

When choosing a provider or reviewing a repair, compare the process and evidence rather than relying on a general claim that a shop can calibrate ADAS:

  • Can the provider access current, VIN-relevant OEM information?
  • Does it support the vehicle’s make, model, year, system, and required calibration type?
  • Are the specified targets, tools, workspace, and road-test conditions available?
  • How are failed, interrupted, or incomplete calibrations handled and documented?
  • Will the provider supply the procedure reference, calibration result, and scan records?

These questions help establish whether the service matches the required process. Equipment availability or a provider’s broad service list alone does not demonstrate that a particular vehicle’s procedure was completed correctly.

What the NZTA ride-height finding does—and does not—show

In a 2023 report, NZTA found that ride height was mentioned in 45% of the manufacturer recalibration processes it examined. The report used that finding to discuss opportunities to improve recalibration processes. It is a result about the processes examined in that report, not a current statistic for every manufacturer or a claim that ride height must be checked in every calibration.
