If your dashboard says an ADAS feature is unavailable, first note the exact message and check the owner’s manual for your vehicle’s model year and configuration. Dirt, ice, fog, poor visibility, or a camera outside its operating temperature range can temporarily limit some systems. Clean or defog only as the manual directs; if the warning persists, returns, or follows an impact or repair, arrange vehicle-specific service. ADAS can assist, but it does not take over your responsibility to drive attentively.
What ADAS does—and what it does not do
ADAS, or advanced driver-assistance systems, is a broad label for features that provide alerts and, in some cases, limited braking or steering assistance. It is not one standardized system: names, sensors, equipment, operating conditions, and controls vary by make, model, year, and trim.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) describes driver-assistance technology as providing “momentary driving assistance, like warnings and alerts, or emergency safety interventions while driver remains fully engaged and attentive.” NHTSA’s driver-assistance overview is a useful framing: remain responsible for controlling the vehicle even when assistance is active.
Common features
- Forward collision or pre-collision assistance: May warn about a potential collision and, on equipped vehicles, support braking. It may not detect every object or prevent every crash.
- Lane departure or lane tracing assistance: May warn about lane position or provide steering input to help keep the vehicle centered when conditions permit. It is not self-driving.
- Adaptive cruise control: On equipped vehicles, adjusts speed or following distance using specified sensors and operating conditions. Follow the vehicle’s manual for limits and controls.
- Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alerts: May use rear-side radar to warn about nearby traffic. Detection limits and false alerts can occur; see the vehicle’s manual.
- Automatic high beams and road-sign recognition: May be part of a manufacturer’s suite, depending on equipment and conditions.
For one vehicle-specific example, Toyota’s 2025 RAV4 Hybrid owner manual describes Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 features including pre-collision assistance, lane tracing assistance, automatic high beams, road-sign assist when equipped, and dynamic radar cruise control. Toyota cautions that drivers should not overly rely on the system. Those names and capabilities should not be assumed for other vehicles.

Why an ADAS warning may appear
An unavailable message does not, by itself, establish that a sensor is broken. A system may pause when its view or operating conditions are unsuitable. The exact cause and remedy depend on the displayed message and the vehicle.

Honda’s owner-manual guidance hosted in NHTSA’s ODI system advises stopping in a safe place and wiping a dirty radar cover or windshield area with a soft cloth; if the warning remains after cleaning, have the vehicle checked. Toyota manuals likewise direct drivers to check for foreign matter on relevant sensors. These are examples, not universal cleaning procedures. Honda warning guidance

Toyota’s manual also describes camera temperature messages and says to use climate control or wait for the camera’s temperature to return to an appropriate range, depending on the message. A Toyota radar message may say the radar is adjusting itself while driving and advise continuing for a while. Follow these instructions only if they match your vehicle’s manual and warning.
Safe steps to troubleshoot an ADAS warning
- Read and record the exact message. Note which feature is unavailable, then consult the owner’s manual for your vehicle’s model year and configuration. A message such as “front radar sensor blocked” calls for different checks from a general system-fault warning.
- Keep driving attention and control with you. Do not depend on an unavailable function, and do not assume an active feature will detect every hazard.
- Inspect only accessible areas named by the manual. If it is safe, look at the relevant windshield camera area or sensor cover for visible obstruction. Clean only as directed; a soft cloth is appropriate only where the manual specifies it. Do not scrape a lens, dismantle a sensor, or spray an unapproved cleaner.
- Address fogging or temperature as directed. Use the stated defogging or climate-control remedy, or wait for conditions to change if the manual says to do so. Do not heat a sensor directly.
- Arrange diagnosis if the warning remains or returns. Seek vehicle-specific service if the message persists after the prescribed check, recurs, indicates a fault, or follows a collision or repair. Ask whether the manufacturer’s procedure calls for sensor calibration.
When calibration or professional service may be needed
Some ADAS repairs require model-specific calibration or adjustment; there is no safe, universal DIY calibration procedure. An NHTSA-hosted Audi recall repair circular refers to front-camera calibration and adjustment or calibration of an adaptive-cruise radar sensor. If a warning follows windshield replacement, collision damage, or work near a sensor, contact the repairer or a qualified service provider and ask which model-specific inspection or calibration procedure applies. Do not try to align a sensor by eye or substitute generic online instructions for the manufacturer’s procedure.

- Function: Identify whether the warning affects collision assistance, lane support, cruise control, blind-spot alert, rear cross-traffic alert, or another feature.
- Sensor location: Check whether the manual identifies a windshield camera, front radar, rear-side radar, or another sensor.
- Message and trigger: Distinguish an obstruction, poor-visibility, temperature, self-adjustment, or general system-stopped message.
- Next action: Separate a manual-authorized owner check—such as cleaning an accessible cover—from inspection, repair, or calibration that belongs to a qualified service provider.
Nearby reflective or moving objects, road layout, weather, lighting, and sensor obstruction can affect system operation. Toyota’s manual documents limits and possible false detections for some blind-spot and rear cross-traffic functions; consult your own manual for the relevant feature’s limits.
