In the United States, compliant ADB systems have been permitted on new vehicles since NHTSA amended Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 in 2022. The feature is not the same as ordinary automatic high-beam assist, and its availability depends on the specific vehicle, model year, trim and market.
What adaptive driving beam headlights do
ADB uses vehicle sensors and control systems to detect other road users, then reduces or reshapes the portions of the high-beam pattern that would otherwise shine toward them. NHTSA describes the approach as using “automatic headlight beam switching technology to shine less light on occupied areas of the road and more light on unoccupied areas.” The result can be a localized dark area, or “shadow,” around a detected vehicle while high-beam illumination remains elsewhere.
The aim is to improve a driver’s view of unoccupied road areas without excessive glare for others. It is a capability, not a guarantee: performance depends on the vehicle’s system and operating conditions, and ADB should not be assumed to detect every vehicle, pedestrian or object or to eliminate glare in every encounter.
ADB versus automatic high beams and curve-adaptive headlights
| Feature | How the beam responds | What the name may mean |
|---|---|---|
| Adaptive driving beam (ADB) | Locally reduces or reshapes high-beam light aimed toward detected road users while retaining light elsewhere. | A selective, changing pattern within the high beam. |
| Automatic high-beam assist | Switches between high and low beam settings when traffic is detected; it does not necessarily create a localized shadow. | Automatic switching of the whole beam setting. |
| Curve-adaptive headlights | May steer or swivel a beam to follow a curve without selectively masking light around other road users. | Directional movement, not necessarily ADB. |
Automakers may use “adaptive headlights” for different technologies. Check the described behavior rather than relying on that label: does the system selectively shade portions of a high beam, or does it simply switch beams or turn them with the road?

Are adaptive driving beams legal in the United States?
NHTSA issued a final rule in February 2022 amending FMVSS No. 108 to allow compliant ADB systems on new U.S. vehicles. The permission is conditional: manufacturers that equip vehicles with ADB must certify that the systems meet applicable requirements. NHTSA’s release framed the rule as a way to permit the technology while maintaining safety for people inside and outside vehicles. NHTSA’s 2022 announcement and its final rule explain the change.
The U.S. framework includes vehicle-level track testing tailored to ADB glare performance and component-level photometric requirements related to glare and visibility. The 2024 rulemaking record describes those two safety components. NHTSA considered international UNECE requirements and SAE J3069, but these are not interchangeable approvals. In explaining its decision, NHTSA said the ECE road test “does not provide sufficiently objective performance criteria” for adoption as an FMVSS test. The 2024 Federal Register record provides that regulatory context.

- [Universal for 12V Vehicles]: Universal compatibility with all standard 12V vehicles, easy installation that won’t disrupt your car’s lighting or electrical system
- [Auto ON/OFF Headlights]: Automatically turns your headlights ON/OFF based on ambient light levels, ideal for low-light scenarios like garages, tunnels, shaded roads and stormy weather
- [Adjustable Sensitivity]: This automatic headlights kit lets you adjust sensor sensitivity to match personal visual comfort, customizing how quickly your lights react to changing ambient light
- [Intelligent Light Sensing]: Promata intelligent car light sensor has less than 1s instant response and is stable without flickering in all light conditions
- [One Button Control]: The easy ON/OFF light sensor with one button allows you to activate or deactivate the automatic headlights system
SAE J3069_202103 is a recommended practice covering test procedures, performance requirements and design guidance; its catalog lists a March 2021 revision. UNECE type approval under UN Regulation No. 123, SAE guidance and U.S. FMVSS compliance are distinct. Approval or compliance in one system does not by itself establish compliance in another.
Do ADB headlights reduce glare or prevent crashes?
Reducing light directed toward detected vehicles is the system’s design objective, but ADB does not guarantee that other drivers will never experience glare. The evidence cited here also does not establish a quantified ADB-specific crash reduction.

Headlight quality matters more broadly. IIHS reports that vehicles with good-rated headlight visibility had 19% fewer nighttime single-vehicle crashes and 23% fewer nighttime pedestrian crashes than vehicles with poor-rated headlights, citing Brumbelow (2022). Those associations concern headlight ratings generally; they do not isolate ADB or show that ADB caused the differences. Separately, IIHS reports that 5% of headlight systems it tested for model year 2026 had excessive glare, compared with 21% for model year 2017. Those figures describe IIHS-tested systems, not every headlight or the entire U.S. vehicle fleet. See IIHS’s headlight research.
Which cars have ADB, and how to verify it
ADB availability varies by model year, trim, market and implementation, so a general list can become outdated or overstate what a particular vehicle includes. Recent reporting identified Rivian as an early U.S. manufacturer to deploy compliant ADB and reported the feature as standard on the R2; treat that as a dated example, not a current, complete availability list or a substitute for an official specification. Check the exact vehicle with the automaker. Axios reported on Rivian’s ADB in August 2026.

- RESTORES ADAPTIVE LIGHTING: Fixes malfunctioning headlights that fail to adjust beam angle, ensuring optimal road visibility and safety during night drives or bad weather.
- ROBUST ALLOY CONSTRUCTION: Built with high grade alloy housing to resist heat and vibration. Ensures long term durability and reliable performance in extreme driving environments.
- WIDE COMPATIBILITY RANGE: Designed for W166 including ML, GL, GLE, and GLS series from 2015 to 2019. Also fits select W190, W447, and W218 chassis.
- STABLE PERFORMANCE GUARANTEE: Features low current fast start technology. Prevents flickering or delayed response, providing consistent illumination and extending bulb lifespan effectively.
- Simple Installation: The installation is simple, no modification is required, convenient for using, save your time and energy.
- Confirm the exact feature. In the vehicle’s official specifications, look for adaptive driving beam or a description of selective high-beam shading. Do not assume “adaptive headlights” means ADB.
- Check the trim and market. Verify the model year, selected trim and country; equipment can differ among them.
- Read the owner’s manual. Confirm activation conditions, operating limits and how the driver can tell whether the feature is active. Honda notes that its described features can vary by model and market launch timing and directs owners to the relevant manual on its ADB technical page.
- Compare headlight performance, too. An ADB label alone does not establish overall visibility or glare performance. IIHS headlight ratings can help compare systems, including vehicles that do not have ADB.
Can you add ADB to a car?
ADB is a vehicle-integrated system, not simply a bulb or headlamp swap. The available evidence does not establish a credible universal aftermarket retrofit or a generally compatible kit. A replacement headlamp assembly does not automatically add ADB; compatibility and system integration are vehicle-specific. For an existing car, check with its manufacturer or a qualified repair professional rather than assuming a retrofit is possible.
